You can adjust the tip of that holder down on the base then problem solved, or you could have spun your rod 180 degrees so that the reel is outside the boat. Ive had those exact rod holders for years and love them. I especially like that you can lock your rod in.
Great video... Back to the basics. The need-to-know. Look... You have a great kayak but many of us don't have THAT kayak... I'm not interested in the in Jackson. However... I love your channel when it's general info that SAVE ME MONEY. This sport... For a beginner like me has a snob factor. I want to know the real deal and learn from your successes and failures. Your the wise one in this forum... Thank you!
I appreciate the feedback. However, I believe the problem with this holder would exist on any kayak. I am really surprised that Jackson would include it.
Lol... I have a Feel Free Moken 12.5... Maybe it isn't the best but I got a deal... My point is (If I have one) I love this Chanel but, for a while, it was all about a really expensive Jackson. I want to hacks... I think a lot of folks feel the same way and trust the old man (so I'm I). I want him to be a regular dude... Not some kayak snob. Look... I mean not bad intent... REALLY! I just think he has more hits when he's talking to the normally folks... Like me...(in my case... normal is being used very loosely).
Agree!!! I got the same 2007 with a big tuna. Thing is a complete pain. I prefer light tackle and so it is pretty much useless for that. Thanks for the tip!
Jackson hasn’t has used that rod holder for several year’s, they now come with the Yakattack Omega rod holder. I normally take 5 to 6 rods when bass fishing, all of which are stored in rod holder on my crate. I only use the one Omega rod holder for the rod I’m currently using, if I’m moving to a different location.
I was binge watching your videos last night and came across the alpha male one and the reveal of your father at the end. My condolences on your loss. Amazing just amazing !
For that kayak I can see the problem, but for my old town Autopilot 120 I use the set you had originally two poles, one on each side and they work great. Of course my rods and reals are different. I use Okuma rods and bait caster reals mostly trolling for Kokanee and trout.
Been looking for a way to carry a 2nd fly rod without it sticking up in the air and getting in the way of casting and line management. One way might be to use the current paddle holder so it’s tucked tight to the side of the yak. Would need a front tube mounted to the side for the tip to slip into. Rod would be bent slightly to match the contour of the yak but that’s okay. Thinking that if it’s tucked tight against the yak it would be “as much” out of the way as it could be. Fishing from Old Town Auto Pilot. Any other ideas?
I use one of these scotty fly rod holders mounted to a utility track at the rear of the kayak. Basically, just the reel and a small length of the rod is "in" the kayak. Most of it hangs level out the back. amzn.to/3Xjh0oT
Thanks for the video. I never thought about some of these problems. I have a Hobie PA 14 that has tons of rod holders but no quick easy rod holder so I can free my hands to tie off a new hook etc. I’ve been looking for the right option. I’m going to keep what you said in mind.
I have only had to paddle short distances since the Coosa FD pedal drive has a shallow water setting. I did notice some interference and just tilted the holder forward to lower the profile.
The RAM balls are great for mounting cameras and light stuff, but when it comes to mounting heavy stuff they just don't have the muscle! They tend to slip too. If I spend a whole day out, I have to adjust my transducer arm a couple of times. I've gotten to the point now where I just tighten it against the boat and it usually stays in place like that. But hanging over the side free its a royal pain.
Love your videos/channel! I prefer the Scotty Rocket Launchers with the Scotty Slip Discs for fine adjustments instead. They keep the reels out of the way of my legs, feet, paddling, etc. better, and also keep the reels higher out of the water. I use the Scotty Rocket Launchers with a gimbal mount in my flushmount rod holders at about a 45° angle outward for trolling and that keeps my reels high out of the water while allowing more adjustment than the simple extension tubes (or PVC pipe). But I also use the same thing in front of me on my gear track. When I catch a fish, retying a lure, or even just soaking a couple lines anchored up and eating lunch, it's just much easier to plop any rod (spinning, baitcaster, whatever) in those tubes, and if you watch your angles, the rods aren't coming out, even if you get snagged, catch a fish, etc. Not to come down hard on the Ram ball design, but I've had too many friends have the ball tension fail them, resulting in rod(s) overboard, and a couple of them permanently lost. If you can tolerate the limitation increments of the Scotty gears, they're rock solid, but if you want more fine adjustment options, the Scotty Slip Discs are very solid, too. Haven't had one fail me yet.
Thanks for another great video, K.H.F. I just bought the Yakattack Omega all in 1 rod holder and love it, it works great for trolling with any type of rod.
I need to just make a generic trip video. The redfish are back but the mullet are still small. We are catching them, but I had to do a hack to overcome the size.
Wow. Thanks for the insight! I hadn't considered there being an alternative.. just "live with it".. ya know? Now, I can see the difference this makes! I also like the "pipe" or "tube" design of the second one. Seems a bit more durable as well as functional!
Kayak Hacks Fishing I noticed that, and I have a Scotty rod holder that I haven’t tried yet, and thanks to your video, I’m “going in” more knowledgeable than I would have. Yay!
Didn't like the ball mount, it seems flimsy for a fishing rod, and the Ram Jr doesn't have a locking device. I already had Scotty mounts on my boat and love them, a $13 Scotty mini extension got the rod 5 1/2" higher off the gunnels off the Kayak
I use it during the summer. We have a few spots where we know the redfish run as they move with the bait into the shallows. I find the caller keeps them in my target zone a bit longer.
I run the RAM tube jr. that work well with both my spinning and bait casters. I also run a RAM-Rod 2000 that is like the 2007 except it has the riser that the RAM tube jr has. The 2000 is able to hold my fly rod.
I'm not happy with the ball mount base of Ram Mount rod holders especially for my style of fishing which is blue water open ocean in pursuit of pelagics. The ball clamp just will not hold when you get a strike from large gamefish like ahi or mahimahi, it will slip downwards. I went back to Scotty Rod holders. For my bigger rods I'm having to go with stainless steel flush mounts. For light tackle fishing in marshlands and estuaries the rams should be fine.
I just bought a used Hobie with the h rails and found the Hobie H-Rail Rod Holder 2016. It’s pricey at $65, however, I just got it delivered and it is heavy duty, sturdy and very adjustable! I think it’s worth the money, there’s nothing like a good rod holder!!!
wayne nagle +1. I have the Ram 2007's and the Ram Jr, and the Omega absolutely smokes them both. The problem with the Ram Jr.'s is that you have to flip them to configure them for either spinning or baitcasting reels. The Omega eliminates this problem altogether and is much more secure than the Ram Jr.'s for spinning reels. The ring on the Omega's will not get bumped out of position, but I have moments where the spinning reel can start to get worked out of the Ram Jr's slot retention system. Also, Yakattack's lock and load system is infinitely better than the Ram ball in terms of ease of adjustment and sturdiness.
Clearly, I need to check out those options! Sounds like I have to make the trip to the kayak guys in the near future! At least I got Jackson to send me the RAM Jr's for free to settle a warranty claim.
You're using the rod holder wrong. It's not supposed to slide in from the side, you're supposed to put it in from the top and have the stem of the spinning reel slide into the top notch.
Not sure I understand your point. I am using the Jr. as RAM shows in this video with the modification to have the reel on the outside of the kayak. Let me know - thanks - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QjBzdISGmv8.html
No you're using the Jr just fine, and it looks like it works a lot better for your setup, but you were using the RAM-Rod 2007 wrong, if you insert it from the top it sits higher, from what I understand the side insert option is for baitcasters. I could be wrong since I don't use bait casters but I use the RAM-Rod 2007 with spinning reels and I always put them in from the top.
Thank you for pointing that out. I just watched the RAM video explaining it (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QyFpsIrOspE.html). However, that just makes it worse for me since there is no room to get it in from the side, it looks like it will be harder to take out and doing it the right way pushes the reel even farther back - causing more problems with the rod butt and the gunwale. I appreciate you taking the time to educate me!! Thanks!
Hey there Kayak Hacks, I have a picture of the way to put your spinning reel in the Ram 2007 rod holder. Yes I bought the 4’ extension for it, but with that being said I love it just as much as the Ram jr that I also have. So if you like a picture I’d be more than happy to send it, I just don’t know how to do that. Thank you for your time. Love your videos! 😀
the spinning rod does not go like that on the holder. the mistake is not buying it. it's how you are using it. The top slot you were trying to use is for baitcasting rods.
I disagree, the baitcaster spot is even farther back. The baitcaster does not have a slot, it has the indent where the protrusions on the baitcaster can sit.
I like using flush mounts, I cast a line out behind me and put it in the rod holder and let it sit and I will have the other rod in my hand and be casting it in front of me
Kayak Hacks Fishing only problem for me is I fish in a inshore area with a strong current and tons of weeds (I mean tons you pull in a clump about every time you reel in) and it is surrounded by marsh but the water is deep, about 6-12 feet in the middle and you have to act fast when something like a Red Fish or Black Drum takes your bait because they will take it into the weeds and get it snagged and you lose a lot of fish unfortunately
Railblaza stuff for me. I use the "Rod Holder R" rig, and it comes with the base mount. If an extension is needed to accomodate longer handled rods, or you just want it higher above the deck, they have a 5" extension. The Rod Holder R also works for baitcasters and fly fishing rigs. www.austinkayak.com/products/21569/Railblaza-Rod-Holder-R-with-Starport-HD.html www.austinkayak.com/products/10743/Railblaza-StarPort-Extender-5-Inch.html
No problem, Steve. I should add that the Rod Holder R I referenced is for lightweight applications, and not recommended for trolling. Also, in order to rotate the holders an adapter is needed, but the friction of the rotation is factory set. No tweaking needed. Heres a recommended holder that also comes with base: www.austinkayak.com/products/17659/Railblaza-Starport-HD-&-Rod-Holder-II-Kit.html The rotating "Swivelport" adapter works well also: www.austinkayak.com/products/15366/Railblaza-Swivelport.html The costs might seem high in some instances, but all of the Railblaza items fit the Starpoint and HD Mounts. Interchangeable items, and they're well-made. Just my personal opinion. :)
@@KayakhacksFishing Ya, what else? That is not good, and you will lose fish. When the drag is loose, the fish will be tipped off, and weak hooksets as opposed to a tight drag. Yes, many things done on kayaks are less than ideal due mostly to space limits. I do like your videos very much, have watched many. Thank you.
Ive been kayak fishing for only a year now. If theres one thing ive learned, its that kayak companies dont have a friggin clue what theyre doing in terms of accessory design. Its pitifully stupid. Yakattack, feelfree (3waters), yakgear, etc...all idiots. 🤨😡😞
