Ao Thalane is a small, local fishing village located around 30km from Krabi town. It sits at the mouth of Nai Sa river, right next to a series of mangroves, caves and towering limestone cliffs. The main reason why tourists visit is to embark on a kayaking adventure. The scenery you’ll see here is simply remarkable!
Whilst visiting Krabi, you’re likely to spend most of your time relaxing on the stunning beaches, sipping on fresh coconuts. However, if you find yourself getting itchy feet and fancy doing something to get you moving, this is definitely the activity for you. It’s good exercise, you’ll see lots of nice scenery, and most of all, it’s very adventurous!
The beauty of kayaking through Ao Thalane is that it’s not a hugely popular activity to do. That’s because a lot of tourists don’t know about it. As it’s around an hour’s drive away from the heart of Krabi town, you’ll soon realise that you’re in the middle of nowhere and will get to experience the beauty of Krabi away from the tourist trail.
The sole reason people visit Ao Thalane is for kayaking. There’s not one route, but many routes to choose from. Each kayaking adventure is made up of mangroves, river streams that lead between limestone cliffs and underground caves. The jungle surroundings and wildlife on each route is also amazing. When you book ask about the tide. If the tide is low you have a limited excursion as you cannot go till the end of the canyon, while with high tide you can have a round trip but even with low tide you will see an amazing canyon with limestone and also mangrovias, even the monkeys.
We did kayaking in Ao Thalane, it was an amazing experience. We did it in the second half of the day. Mangrove forest, kayaking between canons, it was just beautiful. We opted it instead of island hopping from krabi. Few points: you can do it even if you do not know swimming. One can also take helper along for small amount, which makes kayaking easy for beginners. This place is highly recommended.
We had a blast! Picture this: cruising through a big mangrove forest with monkeys and then you are surrounded by towering limestone cliffs that create rooms. Super cool! We had a few stops along the way to chill and beautiful and delicious fruits. It's like a tropical snack paradise on the water. What I loved is there's zero stress. Everything's so relaxed. No need to be a pro kayaker; they make it easy breezy.
