kayaking for fitness
Sea kayaking can be a very healthy full body workout. But only if you know how to move with your kayak...
Check out my free "move with your kayak" video lesson here: www.dancingwiththesea.com/fun...
How to get in shape by sea kayaking?
Here's the thing. Everyone knows exercising is work... And not that much fun.
Unless it's about going somewhere beautiful. You want to keep paddling your sea kayak because you want to know what's around the next corner.
You feel empowered to be exploring using your own power.
Unfortunately kayaking is not automatically a full body workout.
I know a lot of people learn to sea kayak by jamming themselves in. Without the lower body power they end up using more arms and shoulders. So the upper body gets overworked, and the lower body just ends up feeling cramped.
That's not using the sea kayak for a full body workout.
I was very lucky that I discovered the Inuit style of sea kayaking early on. I switched to the Greenland paddle, and learned to move they way I saw the Inuit move with their kayak...I was not looking for a healthier workout.
I was just looking to gain the agility to take my sea kayak in any conditions...so I could explore the beautiful west coast with the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have the skills to get yourself out of trouble.
I did get the agility...
And with that way of moving I discovered that I feel a lot better after paddling all day. Instead of feeling cramped, I feel good all over. Especially my pelvis and lower back.

Paulo your spot on. At 61 yo I found your channel and have applied your technique ! I was 297 lbs. I fasted for 36 hours and paddled every other day during the week and Saturday and Sunday. I ate only 700-900 calories per day and in 4 months was down to 220 lbs. I’m still 61 yo and now 205 lbs. the Greenland Paddle was a real game changer. Enabled me to paddle longer and faster with less effort and more Control. Twas a life changing event for me !

Wow. Your story sounds like mine. I weighed 242 and a half and I'm now 177, past 6 months kayaking 3 to 4 times a day along with fasting 36 to 48 hours sometimes and eating plant-based and I'm 53 best thing I've ever done for myself!!! Great story my friend, congratulations on your new life, the benefits of fasting are amazing, you will probably live longer and have a better quality of life!

I totally agree, you are telling my story here. Sea kayaking cured my back and gave me a second life. The remarkable thing is that most doctors I spoke suggested that kayaking would hurt backs, not cure them. They are wrong.

Wow that's great. A second chance at health is no small thing. I imagine kayaking won't be great for any back injury, but I know a lot of people who share that experience of having their back pain disappear.

Thanks for the tip, I have instinctively tried something similar after feeling tension in the hips from bracing and then experimenting with keeping the legs free. I love how you fixed your back issue through exercise.

Ok, i kayak 3 -4 days a week and fast 20hr day plus some 36 and 48 hrs added in, and eat plant based and walk a mile a day. Lost 65 lbs in 6 months and feel great. Kayaking can really get your heart pumping!!! Great Video thank you !!

I came to kayaking to offset my running/cycling and it was the right choice. Key is to try and listen to your body.

You should do a multi day camping trip on video. Would love to see that. It's beautiful out here in the Ozarks but we don't have the ocean.

Straighten you back and lean forward (symptoms of a weak core). Also check your pelvic tilt I think this is contributing to your lower back issues.

I am recovering from a back injury (two discs...) at the moment, since January. I have been wondering if I will be able to get back to kayaking this summer. This is inspiring. Thank you!

I think I have said it before but there is much overlap between martial arts and kayaking. Both require efficiency of motion and conservation of energy while demanding a rigorous awareness of external conditions, with hard consequences for performing incorrectly. Both bring harmony or settle conflict (even if it's the conflict of being static and not where you want to be) as an urgent requirement of peace.

I love your videos. What brand of greenland paddle do you own? It's beautiful and I like very much how you handle it. I have one greenland paddle in wood but I get often elbow pain. It's 225 cm long for 8 cm large, and I'm 1.70 meter tall. Do you think it's too long for me, or it's all about technique?

A very nice video; I appreciate especially the shots from the other kayak as they are fairly hard to come by when you look at such boats. Then, it's the shots detailing the roll-over which are very illustrative. The landscape shots are also great. I have noticed how your hands are always in the water. Is that part of your paddling technique or is the paddle too short?
@DancingWithTheSea
@DancingWithTheSea 3 года назад
The paddle is the right length, it's the technique.

@@DancingWithTheSea, can longer ones be found? I would hate it to have my hands wet all the time - not only in cold weather, but all the time would that be inconvenient to me.

@@mortschubert3909 If you don't like wet hands the Greenland paddle may not be a good choice for you.

@@DancingWithTheSea, I certainly do not. I should still try one such paddle and see what I can make of it.

@@mortschubert3909 if you don’t like wet hands kayaking might not be your thing! In all seriousness, try wrapping your paddle shaft with some sort of grip. I found a racket grip that was made to perform whilst wet, and it’s been on my paddle for many many years. I think it will alleviate your concerns about wet hands.

Ironically it seems that it's easier to have a proper posture on a sit on top rather than a sit-in.

Paddling a kayak is a fantastic workout but if you're doing it for fitness why would you use a greenland paddle? Learn how to use a wing blade paddle and watch some videos on Surf Ski and K1 paddling technique.

I follow the 80/20 rule in my fitness training so 20 % high intensity either running or surf ski with wing blade and 80 low intensity which you can do with a wing blade but I really enjoy my time in a sea kayak with the Greenland paddle, almost impossible to over exert.

How to brace with an euro blade? 3:50 How not to? 3:56 How to role with a euro paddle? 4:12 Or with every other technique you ever demonstrade with this paddle. I really like your videos an i agree with 90 % of what you say. But it just not true that you can't do all that with a euro blade. Both designs have some pros and cons. I am paddlings since i was 8 years old, now i am 25 and i tried the greenland paddle for the first time. Theire is not that big difference acept the smaller blade and beacause of that the lower force you need with every stroke. But theire are small euro blades and big euro blades. Big blades for max force in wildwater and quick sprints and small blades for less force for max endurance. You suggest theire is just black ore white. And thats just false. Sorry for my bad language and greatings form Germany.
