Thank you very much for this detailed review of the KC-01. I´m a big fan of all bushcraft activities and have been looking for an outstanding knive for a long time now. Lionsteel is the best and most interesting brand I have found so far because I love the design and thought behind all their products, as well as the quallity they put into it. For quite some time now I couldn´t decide between the T5, T6 or M5 as they all have appealing characteristics, but the KC-01 combines it all for me. I´m very happy to have found your review, as it is the only one out there so far (I think) and it convinced me to finally buy the KC-01. Right now im waiting for the delivery and when I´ve had the opportunity to test it out a little I´ll come back here to share my experiences :)

I just received #170/300 in the mail today. They are still available on Lionsteel's website and are shipping immediately. When I ordered there was a 15 day wait, but now the wait shows 24 hours. It took 3 days to get to Miami from Italy. The total was $277 charged on my credit card with exchange rate figured in. Fantastic deal imo! These will sell out quickly and then you'll be sorry you didn't grab one, so hurry up.

I totally agree with you that, if you can, it is better to go with a maker. And I am constantly in the hunt for handmade knives with a reasonable price. The 2 blades I reviewed by aaknives.eu are exactly what you are talking about. They have some gorgeous knives in S390 or S90V at a very good price. Nonetheless this KC-01 is really impressive in terms of quality/price and functionality.

I own the T6 in K490 steel, it's a great knife, but not a bushcrsft knife, more a survival knife and I think this is also true for the KC-01. The T5 is also a great knife and I have reprofiling the edge to a secondary convex edge, nearly a scandivex edge and the knife is great on bushcraft tasks, like for example my Bark River Aurora Scandi CruWear.

The T5 is absolutely brilliant and is one of my favorite knives, which is why I have two. The TRC South Pole is also absolutely great, I also have a version with a secondary convex edge. In the same range as the T6 and KC-01 is the TRC Apocalypse, also an absolutely top knife. What I particularly like about the T5 and T6 is the handle, it's just great and the handles are some of the best I've ever had in my hand. If Lionsteel released a special edition of the T5 with MagnaCut, I would buy it immediately.

There are knives that can do the same thing, for far less, and still be flawlessly, razor sharp. For that price, that knife should be able to do simple batoning and cut paper flawlessly. I do the same thing with all my knives. My buck 119 can do that and still come out on top, and buck knives you can pretty much find anywhere. If a knife is too expensive, I wouldn't want it. I use all my knives but this just shows you don't have to spend a crazy amount of money for a good knife.

@IsitAKnife Месяц назад
I know what you mean and I generally agree with you. Having said that, there is a quality disparity between the 2 knives. It all depends on what you want to settle for. If you look at one of my video, I review a handmade knife which is 89 euro and it is a very good knife. I love it and I even use it as a reference when I want to analyse a knife :) Ciao! :)

It is very large for being a pure bushcraft knife, unusual large. It looks good, but i really dont like finger choils. Much better to hold a handle than too hold a knife blade. Much better to make it so that the handle is close too the edge. Dont Lionsteel also make smaller blades for bushcraft, i think i remember atleast one that has the name bushcraft something on it. Batoning in my mind has nothing to do with bushcraft. It was never done or needed, I have practically grown up in the forest and have never needed it at all. It is just useless in most situations, you use much less calories by using a axe. Instead of hitting and hitting on a blade and getting it stuck all the time. People seems not even to have the sense too chose the right wood for it,not twisted and almost no knots. I understand that some do it for testing the tempering of a knife,but then they should atleast say so. So people dont think that it how you do it in the woods.

Sorry for the late reply. Dimensions: I think that it all depends on what we mean for survival and for how long and what scenario. For instance the Fallkniven F1 was born as a survival knife and the dimensions are smaller. Lionsteel makes many smaller blades. My favourite is the T5. With the batoning you are absolutely right. And probably we have a similar age. I grew up with a menara to chop and split wood :) but as you say it is a good field test for the steel and the general build quality/toughness. In the video on the decathlon knife I mention what you are saying about the batoning and some implications for the industry. Ciao and thank you!

A medium is for me 6.5 too 8" lenght. I like for bushcraft a lenght around 4.5 too 5.5" lenght i can go smaller too. But when out in woods and camping out for the night. @IsitAKnife
@IsitAKnife Месяц назад
I think it is an honest question. That only you can answer. However I think there is no shame in collecting or aiming for better knives as long as they don’t take away the food on the table. Or there is another angle. Save money and instead of buying many Tramontina, you buy just the KC-01 (or another knife). The only thing that I am sure of, is that the KC-01 is the best knife for the money now in the market.

I’m liking the design more and more. It’s moving towards what I hoping for with the T6. Round the pommel, sharpen the spine forward of handle and get rid of the extra hole in the handle. Stop with the “Limited BS” and make it the new and improved T6... FYI...The Architect 6.5 in 3V is a competitive option at a very competitive price...Just Say’n
@IsitAKnife
@IsitAKnife Месяц назад
I didn’t think about that knife! Great suggestion. I haven’t tried it, so take my opinion with that in mind. The design seems less attractive and the build quality not at the same level. Have you tried it? The sharpness of the spine instead is a big no for me and even for Mr. Molletta. The way it is now is more comfortable and we need to stop ruin the steel by using the knife for the fire rod :) with the KC-01 I didn’t have any problem using the pommel for that :) and finally, if it was to become the best T6 possible, then they should make the handle of the KC-01 a solid one like in the T5 (the upper part naked and the lower part with the Micarta). Let me know your thoughts. Ciao!
@dlrmon1
@dlrmon1 Месяц назад
Yes, I have the AK 6.5 and a T5. I’m probably a bit less “ Design” oriented and lean more towards “Tool”. I’m not a fire steel guy but am accustom to using a spine for scraping. The T5 is an interesting knife but I’m afraid I’m going to break the handle most every time I use it. I mostly use the T5 sheath for other knives. I agree the fit and finish is better on the T5 than my AK 6.5, but after a few good uses the differences are usually gone for me...Why I haven’t tried the T6 or M7 is the handle design, and my experience with any sharp pommel has led me to reshape or grind it off.

@IsitAKnife

No. The philosophy by Molletta is that the spine should be comfortable for your fingers and that it should not be used for the fire steel. The heat generated is high enough to damage the blade over time and reduce its dependability.

@LegionTacticoolCutlery Месяц назад
@@IsitAKnife Yeah he is right. I hate showing a spine to test the ferro rod. It does do minor damage to the spine. I only do it one time to show testing. Subscribers get upset if i don't show it. I think moving forward I wont do that anymore.
@retirementOwl
@retirementOwl 5 дней назад
I got my KC-01 via DHL today. The butt of the knife has a 90 degree spine that's just over an inch long and it throws sparks on a ferro rod very well. The rest of knife has a comfortable rounded spine, so you get best of both worlds. This is one of the big improvments over the similarly sized T6 which has a slim stick tang in the handle. The full tang on the KC-01 gives a lot more edge real estate on the back of the handle making sparks a breeze. @isitaknife
