I'm back in front of the camera again, this time with a little mini review and my thoughts on the two SRB chassis Tamiya buggies.
Which ones should you get? They are both fantastic buggies and a great addition to any RC collection. You won't be disappointed with either of them. The Fighting Buggy has the unique rear suspension and can easily fit 7.2V NiMH stick packs. The Scorcher has the looks, the sealed electronics box and the "fame factor".
Some things I forgot to mention in the video: The Fighting Buggy has a couple of mods; the black bumper that comes with the Sand Scorcher and the Tamiya Ball diff. It runs 7.2V NiMH and the HI gearing. The Sand Scorcher has no diff (stock), HI Gearing and Tamiya's 6.6V LiFE battery.
As always, thanks for watching!

Reason why I like these vintage cars is the scale looks. Take any modern buggy and it doesn't look like anything that exists in full size. But these vintage designs are just so pretty.

Agree 💯 The scale looks add so much to these buggies. They may not have the performance of modern day designs, but they more than make up for it with their realism and aesthetics. 👍

Hi David, I complete agree with your thoughts about box art. Customizing the paint job is lot of more fun😉

Definitely a lot more fun, and in my case always a bit of a lottery as to how the end will result will look! ( I usually don't succeed in achieving what I initially set out to do 😅 ) Though, in some cases I feel I have to go with box art - the Wild One Blockhead Motors for example!

After the 3rd attempt I got all the air out of the pipe or so I thought, looked at it the next day and there's big air bubbles in it, was like WTF! lol, I'll take you're advice and leave I think, great vid, just love these SRB chassis

Thanks for the run down on both of them and sharing some of the quirks and cool factors of both of them. I really do like the rear suspension on the Fighting Buggy and the exposed tires kind of make me happy watching them in the video! The scorcher is a wonderful car and I want one of both of them but I think the FB has taken the lead in the want list from the Scorcher! I will enjoy watching yours until i get one for myself!

Oh, very well put together video, David, a joy to watch and especially listen to your knowledge and/or opinions. Especially your use of b-roll footage to illustrate what you're talking about, that just works so well! I had also failed to understand these two cars, I don't think I have ever seen them in real life, so I was happy to be educated. On a complete side note, is that a Macau flag on the Scorcher? I know now that you're English, but you're living somewhere in Asia, very confusing to me, ha ha!
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC 2 года назад
Thanks, your comments are very much appreciated ☺️. I'm still very much a novice at all this RU-vid business, but I'm enjoying the learning experience. The flag on the Scorcher is something I made - the kit doesn't come with anything, so I used a piece of yellow vinyl tape and stuck a little Tamiya star decal left over from a Comical Avante build 😁. And to clear up the confusion, I'm British but have lived in Japan for a long time. 🇬🇧 🇯🇵

I love the SRB platform & have all the vintage models. I have a couple of original Super Champs & they suffer from the same terrible turning circle as the fighting buggy. This is not down to the steering angle, its two things... huge weight bias to the rear & far too stiff front suspension. It's easy to fix, no need to worry about reducing weight, just soften the front suspension. The peg type front springs need to go. Use coil overs but they must be set very soft, so soft that when you have the car on the bench it wont seem like you have enough front suspension. But under power the car lifts the front, reducing load on the soft suspension it will then turn in properly. The shock oil reservoir on the fighting buggy is purely there for the correct vintage look. However it was present on the Super Champ because the shock leaked so badly that you required the oil reservoir to allow you to finish a race with oil still in the rear damper. It's one of the most iconic rc suspension set ups but if you look at vintage race cars from the early 80's no one used it. The SRB runs best with a coil over shock on each corner.

Thanks for the detailed info! 👍 I had noticed when I used my heavier standard 7.2 nimh pack in the Fighting buggy the steering improved compared to using Tamiya's recommended LiFe battery, which is much lighter. Once you get used to the terrible steering, it isn't too bad. 😁

Thanks for another great and informative video on the SRB chassis! I’ve been running my Friogscorcher for a long time before I finally got myself an srb. Like you, I was impressed by it’s generous use of metal parts and unique engineering. It is a joy to drive but performance wise, it’s definitely a step below the ORV chassis. Great job on these videos. Keep them coming!👏👍😊

Thanks! I really like how you did your Frog Scorcher and agree, it would definitely handle better than the SRB chassis. That reminds me, I really need to set out restoring my heavily used and slightly abused 2005 Frog at some point 🤔

Great video of your thoughts, the fighting buggy suspension acts like a solid axle, when one side is coMpressed the other side is pushed into the ground, very cool design. The flex in the chassis helps give it tons of grip 👌 i love it. Softer chassis have more grip. I dont have that bad of a turning circle, I wonder why
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC 2 года назад
Thanks! Yeah, the chassis flex is a little unnerving when you're building it, but any concerns soon dissipate once you start driving 👍 I can't work out why the steering is so bad, I've checked and double checked to make sure I put it together correctly. I've seen some posts on forums with similar issues, so I guess I'm not the only one. Eventually I'll get around to doing something about it, but for the moment I'm just enjoying it for what it is. Perhaps the poor cornering is a blessing, as it seems the body on these is so easily damaged on a roll over!
@rexrcs
@rexrcs 2 года назад
@@KaiCityRC yes very much a roll happy car at higher speeds or tight turns… I’ll do more video of mine to see, it’s a much tighter turning circle, I also have my rear diff locked, thats probably helping me make a tighter radius Im guessing. Thanks for your reply to chat!

@@KaiCityRC just came back from a run with mine, here to share my thoughts, on some surfaces at high cruising speeds i can feel the lack of weight over the front wheels, and the chassis flex does a good job of giving the rear lots of grip on throttle, and thats where I can also feel a lack of steering, Im going to add weight on the front of mine and see what happens
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC 2 года назад
Yeah, I have the optional ball diff fitted to mine, so that might have an impact. The FB with it's heavy rear end is very unbalanced, which doesn't help with the steering!

Great vid and overview of the cars :) although the Fighting Buggy rear suspension looks awesome would you say the shocks on the back of the Sand Scorcher actually work better ? great channel
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC 2 года назад
For a simple torsion bar set up, the Sand Scorcher's rear suspension works quite well. The Fighting buggy by design tends to shimmy over everything. That said, the Fighting buggy feels more planted when cornering, whereas the Sand Scorcher often seems to be on the verge of rolling over! Perhaps that might be due to the added weight. Initially I installed Rough Rider wheels & tires on the Sand Scorcher, but it really wanted to roll under hard cornering, so I reverted to the kits wheels and tires. Watching the slo mo back of my previous running videos, you can really see how well the Fighting Buggy's rear mono shock works.

Great Video! Which color or color code you used for the sand scorcher? Looks Amazing!
@KaiCityRC
@KaiCityRC Год назад
It's been a while, and I don't remember exactly what color it was. It *may* have been TS42, but thinking back I might have used PS41 Bright Silver. The body started out red, but I messed it up and so in a moment of frustration I blasted over it with some left over cans I had. Normally, you wouldn't use PS paint on a hardbody, but earlier in the year I had mistakenly painted the Blitzer Beetle in PS paint and I liked the no glossy finish it produced. Thanks for commenting and sorry, can't be of more help!
