Wow! I just saw this video, thank you for the info on the KDSS system including the mods. I was looking into purchasing the system to add to my 4Runner. Now I'm reconsidering. Thanks again!

I took my KDSS 4Runner through the Rubicon a few times. I'd guess it's well under 1% of owners who will ever take them down a trail more challenging than the Rubicon. At very low speeds it's excellent. If you have stock control arms, it's hard to get more travel than KDSS will allow at low speeds when the shutter valves are open. It's the medium speed stuff where it comes up very harsh. IMO kdss is better than any other system I know of except one custom setup I've seen. It's a mechanical forced articulation system using torsion springs, a dana 60 center section (spider gears of the open diff mounted adjacent to transfer case) and run to each axle. Very cool, fully mechanical, forced articulation, zero travel restrictions, and excellent handling. But not realistic for an OEM.

The new Land cruiser 250 flexes significantly better with the front sway bar disconnect and rides better :-) several people have put them on CTI ramps now.

I have a 2024 4Runner with KDSS. Based on my past 4Runner without KDSS, the KDSS drives significantly better highway and city driving…much beefier sway bar reduces body roll a lot. I don’t do aggressive off-roading, only up to moderate and the KDSS is a champ. Travel is very good and increase articulation keeps traction. Have Bilstein suspension system with only a 1 inch lift. Get more travel in front and rear with Bilstein suspension. Have a rock slider, no problem with KDSS. Also on corrugated roads runs OK; however, maybe due to the suspension which also has bypass function. I get better articulation than non-KDSS and able to drive on corrugated roads with enough comfort and control. However if I did more difficult backroads like Black Bear Pass would miss having a 3inch or more lift on a non-KDSS 4Runner. If you have KDSS, you need to maintain it, accumulator etc, like your frame, if so very reliable for what I use it for.

Thank you for the comment. I'm sure your opinion will change once your system has a failure just like mine did LOL but yes it drives nice on pavement but that is not what I bought this truck for. If I wanted something that drove nice on pavement I would get a sports car

You can install front and back sway bar from land cruiser 120. You will need to weld the back brackets for back sway bushings and front sway bar installation requires just very minor mods. I have the link with all dimensions and parts - the problem is that it is on RU language. Planning to do such nod once my kdss die

I see why KDSS is not ideal for your application. This is probably why the TRD Pro does not have KDSS. I like the system but agree the off-road harshness is a drawback. I also have the Dr KDSS switch and use it at moderately low speeds on bumpy roads. It definitely smooths ride quality at the speeds I drive but perhaps that is not the case at higher speeds. In any case, thanks for the video. It's good to get feedback on different applications and solutions.

I agree KDSS version aftermarket front skids do have less clearance. The issue here with you hitting your skid is the design of the RSG front skid plate, it hangs down about 1" lower than stock. My oem kdss front skid plate hits way less than my RSG front skid plate on the same trails. Cool skid plate but the lost of ground clearance sucks.

Hey! Love these videos as they're super informative. Can you please just let me know what the process is on removing the front sway bar? Is it as simple as removing it from end links and chasis? Would it cause the KDSS light to come on? Mainly looking to improve the ride quality! Thanks for your help/guidance!

@incompetent.engineer

I’m dealing with the front cylinder clunk. I replaced it with an eBay part (50k miles) and that one clunks as well! Given your experience with KDSS, do you think the rear sway would work as intended if the front cylinder/sway is removed and the lines are capped off? It wouldn’t work exactly as intended, but seems like an easy way to retain the rear sway and get rid of the front clunk. I may just try it, if I can find the fittings to cap off. Otherwise will need to figure out some other rear sway bar solution. Seems like the rear sway is a must and front is optional for drive-ability
@MudPuppyOffroad

5th Gen 4R owner with KDSS and icon suspension with bumper and heavy duty springs and have been trying to diagnose my dreaded "kdss clunk" that showed up after shop put on the heavier springs. Exactly as you described the clunk- it's coming from that front cylinder for sure. So first and foremost thank you for the nerdy deep dive into the system and showing how these various mods may or may not impact it. Your assessment of losing travel with adding a spacer on fixed link on the front sway bar makes sense. But now I'm still left wondering if adding the two spacers on that companies sell for the rear might have any disadvantage? My icon kit came with a kdss modified rear panhard bar so i don't really have a clearance issue except maybe at absolute full flex. However, I'm wondering if adding any of these spacers might actually increase pressure in the hydraulic system (that doesn't seem likely in my mind) or particularly in the front change the geometry such that there's less lateral stress on the opposite cylinder assembly thus potentially reducing or eliminating the clunk? Or is it your opinion that the clunk is a sign of irreparable damage to the cylinder/system and a kdss delete is the best route?
@MudPuppyOffroad
@MudPuppyOffroad 11 месяцев назад
I think the rear spacers are safe the reason I didn't run them is because I didn't want my sway bar hanging down any farther when the rear axle is flexed. I played with my front cylinder some more today and I can feel some side to side play that I don't think was there before my extended travel struts with a lot of preload. I think that play is related to the clunk and I think it is permit damage. The reason I have decided to delete the system is because I don't like how complicated it is and driving with no front sway bar off road was so much more fun that I can't justify putting money into fixing the clunk.
@MudPuppyOffroad

The video you showed comparing old KDSS vs new E-KDSS does show the difference between the two systems with STOCK SUSPENSION and the rebound/compression rate of that stock suspension with the two versions of KDSS. That is all. Aftermarket suspension with lighter or heavier springs, and different valve rates for rebound and compression can make the old KDSS system much worse off road or much better. Perhaps even better than the new E-KDSS system with stock springs and valving. That requires time and money to get right though. I'm looking forward to the new front sway bar disconnect that Toyota/Lexus is putting on newer vehicls.
@MudPuppyOffroad
@MudPuppyOffroad 9 месяцев назад
So I kind of see where you're coming from but based on your logic, the system should work better with a higher spring rate and stiffer valving. Heavy suspension would make it easier for the KDSS cylinder to keep up with the wheel travel when unlocked. So if anything by adding heavier springs and high damped monotubes, I made the system's job easier when it's in float mode. In any case, I had the same complaints with the system before and aftermarket suspension. And it started to fail with the aftermarket suspension installed. prob Because of the increase down travel. I am also excited about the new disconnecting sway bar. It takes out all of this BS
@brianphillips8228
@brianphillips8228 9 месяцев назад
@@MudPuppyOffroad From all of the research I've done, there's no real middle ground in GX with KDSS suspension lift kits. Either go Extended long travel with fully adjustable shocks for compression and rebound, and forget the KDSS or go 2" max with a few tweaks and spacers to retain the most suspension travel with KDSs while keeping the stiff for the road and relaxed for off road KDSS advantage. Or, a very expensive third option on these is to keep your lift small, or even stock suspension and get portals. One American company and one Ukrainian company make them for the GX/4Runner. I think they both start at $20k
@MudPuppyOffroad
@MudPuppyOffroad 9 месяцев назад
@@brianphillips8228 I tried the spacers... Cost a huge amount of articulation. I wheel a lot and pretty hard. I think I would have killed the system regardless. Even all stock.
