When he says Twitch is losing money he doesn't mean Twitch's bank account is diminishing he means that Amazon is looking at their Twitch asset and seeing that their asset is not making Amazon money in the way another company using AWS would be. It's like... if you lived in a house with 4 other roommates and 1 loses their job. If the jobless roomie uses their savings for rent but you and the other 3 roomies pool together to cover their utilities usage, sure things cost wayyyy less for the jobless roomie. But that jobless roomie still isn't making money and more importantly your household is losing money because of that jobless roomie. So what do you and the other roomies do? ... You tell the jobless one to get a job (i.e. Amazon telling Twitch to get profitable to the point that they _could_ pay the full AWS rates) or they'll be kicked out (i.e. Amazon selling off Twitch or just closing it down and pushing everyone to Kick so they can charge Kick at standard or even higher rates to continue using AWS for its backend).

It's also not calculating ads. How anyone talk about twitch without mentioning ads and not die of laughter is actually impressive.

@@txsoutlawttv7145what do ads have to do with how much the cost of streaming to a certain amount of end-users, in a certain quality for a certain time is? this calc doesnt calculate how much money twitch is loosing per stream. it calculates how much money it costs twitch to physically broadcast it.

what a cooked take. amazon could sell the bandwith for full price to a third party but instead has to give it to twitch at a lower rate. amazon owns twitch. so amazon is using money by providing for twitch

That’s called an opportunity cost. Amazon looks at that and says “if we shut down Twitch, which loses money despite the discounted AWS rate and free prime memberships, we could be selling AWS to another platform and be purely profitable.”

@@flakkes2437 I don't think it's public knowledge is it? So I guess were both in dark and can only make assumptions. I would assume there would be a very favourable deal with twitch, due to Amazon owning it. It still opperates at a loss due to server costs and prime membership, although you could argue due to twitch, they get more prime members signing up who wouldn't sign up if it wasn't for twitch. Hard to say really without seeing the data, but amazon is keeping it for a reason so it can't be that detrimental to the over all company.

Yeah, Amazon could charge another platform much more for AWS than they charge Twitch, that’s an opportunity cost. Even with that discount, Twitch loses money. Not only is Amazon losing out due to opportunity cost, Twitch is hemorrhaging money despite that discount…
