My dog is really scared of thundering... Often when I sit down on the floor to comfort her she climbs onto my lap and getting as close to me as possible.. Poor little dog: /

I came here from a psychology course to learn about habituating dogs. Honestly I don't have a dog (though I would love to), this was so relaxing and amazing to watch. I instantly fell for both Victoria and the dog. Thank you!

I love it when my dog listens to me play piano. I can make all three of my dogs fall asleep whilst playing. I think it's so sweet. My female boxer dog especially loves it. She will follow me in to the piano room and lie down right beside the piano and just go to sleep.

Absolutely love Victoria; I'm a Zoology student and when I come home from studying I love to watch her vids to relax. She is brilliant and I would give anything to work or train with her. Funny that I say that considering I am getting a Phd in Animal Behavior ;-). I wish they would take that backwards thinking Cesar Millan off air and just run Victoria's show :-). I did a podcast explaining why Victorias way is so much more productive and better for the animal.

Staying with the dog and being reassuring is a great tactic. The worst thing would be to completely ignore them in their moment of stress (assuming they aren't acting aggressive). There are also products available, like sprays and pressure wraps, that might help calm them down. You could also try positive reinforcement conditioning for loud sounds by playing fireworks sounds at a low volume, giving the dog a treat, then continuing over time and increasing the volume.

Some dogs do need meds. If they're too panicked for behavior modification exercises, then instead of making positive associations, they will just freak out and the experience will have the opposite effect. After time they can be weaned off the drugs when they've become more comfortable making those steps.

When these types of demonstration are done, it would be more relevant if they used a dog with anxiety during thunderstorms' etc.; a dog already accumulated to thunderstorms', fireworks, etc... stress, is not reality for most owners!!!!

Our thunderstorms are intense here and there's always a smell that foretells a coming storm, once it hits the whole house shakes and you can feel the ground tense up. So how do you get around that? I've tried this music and nothing, bought the Thunder jacket, nothing, my dog shakes uncontrollably and his panting gets shallow to the point where he is near passing out. I've tried 'Calm' from the vet however he is a severe case as he was rescued from a dog ring as he initially was used as a bait dog by these evil mongrels. I'm honestly at my wits end, I can't go anywhere otherwise he tears the house up, we can't leave him in the yard or he'll tear his claws off trying to dig at the cement, he tore out teeth from trying to chew the side fence.

So getting a CD from Victoria and work with my older dog cause Thunder storms terrify her and I never knew how to help her.

Hi, sorry this isn't related to the video, but I read your comment and I'm just curious about the requirements for a Zoology/Animal behavior program. Does it require any science courses? I'd love to be able to study Animal Behavior, but I have no science credits from high school...

I got a female rescue dog that cant stand thunderstorms..she starts to react one day before and the day of the storm if I at work she will distroy the scrren door and will attempt to breakout. We had replaced our rv door 5 xx and she has even broken out of a crate She has no safe place..I have tried soft music but nothing works.. I tried a lot of different products at Pets Smart to include CBD products for pets...worst mistake to do! Please help....anyone...

You probably will not read this but here goes anyway. Most of us do not have CD players anymore…sadly. If there was a way to get this, I would love to know how and my dog is really afraid of storms and we live in Florida…enough said. Even the thunder shirt does not work on her although it worked wonder on my other dog.

I watched a slow motion video of mouse traps going off on a trampoline, and my dog was shaking for 5+ minutes. I have a feeling it might be a bit late for her. I adopted her this year, and she turns 11 years old this month, so she's been living with the fear of thunder/shooting for her whole life

i just love the idea of music! i think it is a fantastic idea. :) But i would not do the idea of a "den" because in my opinion thats letting the dog to flight(runaway) from the situation.

wrong proces... Cause in a Fright state of mind the dog is on Survivor mode and block al cognitive proces. Means the dog will never asociate the Récord sounds in the track whit the real thing. Remember IS NOT THE NOICE the dog is afraid but the unknown of the NOICE. In the session the dog asociate the Sound músic whit the massage and spending time whit the owner NOT THE BACKWROUND NOICE. Sorry but this is out of the Reality of the problem... And doesnt adress it

My dog is on medication and literally does not help. Vet increased dosed and prescribed a second med. Nothing. My dog runs away in the house and destroys anything in his path. Example runs on tables knocks over lamps..whatever. Tries climbing into walls. Even ended up in fridge one time. I tried crates but he bent metal ones and got out. He also got his jaw stuck and it was horrible and so scary. I tried thunder shirts as well as natural calming pet store drops. I am lost as to what to do. He will not eat a treat..drink or let me hold him. I tried the cave type..never the music..He is 9 and good dog other than that. I can not leave home at this time because he can no longer be crated. I can not afford the expensive steel ones. I have my doubts about cd's working butI am willing to try anything. I can not live like this and in Florida it tains a lot. He even is scared of rain and does same. It was not always this bad with him. This year he got worse for whatever reason. Now he acts totally off the charts. Anyone else have this situation. Any suggestions? Thank you. Ps I took my dog off the Prozac. It was not helping and my poor dog was not himself. Now he happy again. The Xanax for storm does not work.

The 'den' theory is a miserable failure and in fact, an astonishingly cruel method. Dogs are 'fight or flight' animals, so enclosing them without the ability to move from room to room in your home is idiotic and plain cruel. Additionally, the radio and TV theory is a crock. Their hearing tunes in to the explosions of the fireworks or thunder and the 'ambient' sound is useless. The worst suggestion is any kind of compression wrap or vest. It is a pure fabrication and an exercise in futility. So, the search for viable, credible and professional solutions continues.

There is a wonderful natural medicine to calm dogs( animals) in such a conditions. It comes originally from England and is called Bach Flowers Essences. It does not have any side effects ( as opposed to vet prescriptions) and is cheap ( as all homeopathic remedies are so much cheaper than any allopathic remedies) and it's working deeply,effectively and lasting. You chose the right remedy by description of the symptoms, yet it goes be yon and beneath the symptoms as it cures the root of problem. my dogs doesn't care, i was worried with their first new year experience, but no fear with fireworks too. They respond to my call so i'm sure they are not deaf.

I live in south florida on the coast it literally rains here everyday especially during the summer, i have a mini schnauzer who is 2 years old and everytime it rains even if it isnt thundering she will start shivering and if it starts thundering she will start panting very hard and shaking

wrap your dog in a swaddling blanket completely and secure it closed.....they will not be afraid anymore

Yes hun it does and math as well. They are mostly courses you will take in college so don't worry if you don't have too much from high school. You will do whats called your "Basics" first before you go into University. When you take your basics though, you want to do really well because its a very cut-throat field. You must get a high GPA. To get back to your question though, yes, it will take many bio courses, math, and chem. Not all Universities offer Zoology either so be sure to check.

Oh and to add to my message below your basics are basically two years that you will do at a Community college. It will feel a lot like the courses you may of had in high school, but amped up so to speak. As long as your GPA is high and you work hard you'll be fine though :-). Experience is also great, internshipe or even volunteering at an animal shelter or vets office. If you go all the way to the Phd like I am you take many of the same courses as a vet (which was the route I was going to take)

My dog was a flat coat and he LOVED thunder storms and he LOVED fireworks! He would actively sit at our back door and watch both, desperately wanting to get out there. The first sign of lightening and he would get all excited and try to get out there. In the end he always had to settle for sitting at the window and watching what’s going on.

I know this is supposed to be calming, I find it quite irritating. It’s like scratching a chalkboard! I need another option
