Miniature basing doesn't have to be so complicated! In this video, I show you two of the basing methods I use to base my miniature skirmish games, as well as why I've decided to keep my skirmish basing a bit more simple than my army basing!

I *love* the paint on the tufts as flowers technique - I've never seen that before! Awesome, Dana!

I was really nervous I wouldn't get my Pale Sand bingo card checked off for this one, but then at the 3/4 mark it happened! Very thankful.

The same sort of "pinch a loose bit of static grass before gluing" trick can also work with little snips of jute cord, if you don't have the static grass. I've found bundles of jute cord at the dollar store, so it's very cheap. You'll probably be limited to one color, like brown, so it's mainly good for dead grass. But you might be able to give some "life" back to it with green or yellow drybrushing. You could also do the trick with the heavy paint on the tips of the grass, just substituting a duller color, so signify dead/wilting flowers. A great way of bringing life - or rather death - to an undead army.

the paint blobs look 100% like flowers 💐 I’m gonna try doing the same technique with pink and orange and baby blue and have bases full of wildflowers 🤩

Honestly, this might be how commercial grass tuft companies do flowers. I don't know, it's just a theory.

Love this! I'm exactly the same way - I do all my bases for every game in the same style as - the way I see it - they're fighting each other on the same battlefield :)

I hadn't thought of half styrene tubes for sunken pipe, neat, and copper wire for pipes, both stuff I have lying around. I'll give it a try :)

One of the things I hate most about painting up an army is basing because as bad as I am at painting, I'm even worse at basing! My bases either turn out too sparse and boring, or too busy and crowded and detract attention away from the mini. And here you are making it look oh so easy!

Oh man, the yellow paint at the end: I do that all the time, but I like to have a mix of Bright yellow, bright red, bright blue and bright purple in clusters. It really creates a nice subtle wildflower look.

oooh. I like the paint on the tips of the grass trick. That could be really cool with some wild pinks and blues for a pop of alien foliage. I'll have to try that soon!

The evolution of wargame bases fascinates me. I'm old enough remember the days GW would have goblin green bases with that equally goblinny green powder that used to be considered flock back then :p I also like the idea of Friendly Foliage brightening up the day of these otherwise dour and bloodthirsty warriors of Rivenstone.

The thick yellow paint grass tips is a neat trick that results in an impressive result. I'm really amazed by it.

Those Rivenstone bases turned out gorgeous! The contrast of the orange ground with the light green is perfect. I never thought to drybrush my flocking but from now on I certainly will :D I really wish Rivenstone came in smaller scales. I'd love to paint those gorgeous minis up for DnD-use, but 35mm is just way too large^^

Thanks for the direct on Twitter, for this video I do quite like the idea of a unified basing theme for game systems. I was thinking about that for SW Legion, but that didn’t happen 😂

You can give the flower bit a little more body by mixing in some PVA.

My go-to method for grass-tufts is to use small clumps of hemp-rope, mostly dyed green. I gotta try that suggestion of adding extra paint on the grass for making flowers. :)

Great video, I can see myself doing something similar for small warbands. I don't think I could do it for a large army though, just to many models to give that level of base detail to.

That souinds like a good idea. I've made each of my kill teams with similar base materials but a different end colour painted over top of the materials because currently Its the only minis game I'm painting. but made the ones where I have more than one team in the same faction have the same base.. All my Tau have the same base regardless of if they are for my Pathfinder team or for my Compendium team. My Loyalist Marines and Chaos marines have the same Base materials but then had a different color painted over top (Red on the chaos and Grey on the Loyalists. My Legionaries team will have the same base materials but again a different colour because the red I used with Alpha Legion won't look good with Red Word Bearers. For my Tyranids It will be the same base material but probably done in a quite dark brown tone. My cultists that go with my Compendium Alpha Legion team however have Necromunda Metalic bases on them as they came with those as Escher Ganger Models and I feel its neat to differentiate them from their supposed Masters.

Will Citadel texture paints work as a way of sticking the minis to the base in the same was that you used the Vallejo basing paste? I never knew you could do that (quite new to the whole mini painting scene!)

@dmeep

I went all GW games take place in a red sand desert since i bought a martian gamemat for my home table so now all of them fight in a red desert. the dnd minis and malifaux models get whatever i feel like. I dont spend a massive amount of time on the base - decent to good is good enough. linetroops are lucky if they get to stand next to a tuft and characters get randoms leftover bits from another of my armies as basing a GSC dude might have some Tau pauldrons etc

Okay, but why do they call it 'snow texture'? Army Painter has that stuff too, but the grain is too big for snow (on 28mm scale minis at least)

try mixing it with acrylic medium, it's pretty interesting. Although I haven't tested it enough to figure out the ins and outs. My first test had a bit of colour bleed from the layer below, but first impression is promising

I don't like bases that are made with tufts of grass or sand, you know, things that try to look realistic. I prefer bases with sculpted and painted parts that match the stylization of the model on them.
