Keep Your 4WD From Failing With 1 Easy Trick!

The 4X4 actuator on the 4th Gen 4runners is known to seize up if you don't use it. Luckily you can avoid that with 1 easy trick:
Use it or lose it!
That's all you need to do. Even if you don't take your 4runner off road, you still need to cycle the 4 wheel drive once a month to keep everything moving freely. This takes 10 seconds and could potentially save you hundreds in repair costs!

I have an 04 Toyota 4runner my H2 and H4 work perfectly but my L4 blinks when it’s in Neutral and it doesn’t stop and of course when I put it in drive or reverse it gives me that beeping noise. Have any idea on how to fix that?

Appreciate your video, but these do indeed have a 'center' differential... it's call a Torsen differential, and it's what enables _full-time_ 4WD on pavement. Don't confuse it with the nomenclature of a traditional transfer-case on part-time 4x4's. e.g. Jeep Wrangler. Different animals. BTW, I also dislike de-throttling (drive by wire) with VSC.
@johnd830
@johnd830 2 года назад
Thanks for your video. If your actuator for 4Lo doesn’t engage you should not panic. It is indeed stuck but there’s a decent chance it can be freed without a T-Case rebuild. I did this on my new-to-me 2008 V8 by repeatedly engaging and disengaging the transfer case several dozen times in my driveway, in between some of these cycling attempts I was also crawling under the truck and lightly tapping the transfer case and actuator (very lightly) with a dead blow mallet. After about 20 minutes or so it finally popped into 4Lo. Some people on the forums suggest doing this process with the vehicle warmed up, others have found success with partially loosening (but not removing) the bolts for the actuator. However I would try the former method for a while before resorting to this. PS - can we talk about how backwards it is that the GX got a manual lever and the T4R got the electronic. That’s some marketer’s logic right there, let’s make the Toyota seem fancy and the Lexus seem rugged.

I bought my 4th Gen Limited V6 last year with 100k miles. While 4H would engage, I couldn't get 4LO to engage for the life of me. I had mostly written it off until last week when I took it to do some very light off roading and attempted the 4LO. In a matter of seconds, it engaged! Now that I know it works, it's going in to have the fluid replaced and I'll continue to engage it every month. Great video!
@smokestack9795
@smokestack9795 4 года назад
Also, change the transfer case fluid as well as your differential fluids as recommended by manual. I know from personal experience, even though I exercised it monthly, the fluid changes made it for smoother engagement of transfer case.

I knew I was't going crazy. This happen to me in 2004 when I bought my 4th gen. I remember stopping at a stop sign at an intersection and the moment I decided to go my wheels slip and my 4 runner just stiff the fuck up in the middle of an road where it could of cause an accident instead of avoiding it. I remember thinking why did I trade in my explorer for this junk. I eventually ended up disabling that abs crap and was finally able to enjoy my 4 runner. 2020 and I have no regrets, I still have my baby and I'm in control.

Great video. Thanks for reminder. Very commonly overlooked. Never had this problem with my 08 4Runner Limited 4WD v6. However I do have it with my wife’s Land Cruiser. Last month I drove her LC out to a sandy muddy area to activate 4lo but it ended up getting stuck in 4lo...unable to get back into 4HIGH. I’ve also had problems in the winter where her actuator light will flash when cold cranking vehicle to start the day. I really need to use the 4lo and locking diff more often. These issues are usually resolved once LC is warmed up or I turn the vehicle off and back on again. Going for 300k+ miles in both vehicles(already did it w two other Toyota’s, a 91 4Runner and 97 Land Cruiser). Best built vehicles on the planet!

Actually, the point of failure is the seizing of the Automatic Differential Disconnect (ADD) which is located in the front diff which is a solenoid actuated sleeve. The ADD on my 2004 Tundra did seize because I failed to routinely cycle the 4WD. I was able to tap on the ADD with a hammer and free it up. I learned my lesson and routinely cycle the 4WD monthly.

You don't have to rebuild the transfer case just because it needs an actuator. If you know what you're doing you can actually replace the actuator without having to take the transfer case apart. You disassemble the new actuator pull the shaft out slide it over the existing shaft on the transfer case and reinstall the gears in the proper orientation. Reinstalling the gears in the proper orientation is where knowing what you're doing comes in.

Nice video and good advice, thanks for sharing. Hope you don't mind just one technical clarification though.....your 4runner does in fact have a center differential as well as a transfer-case. Yes all 4x4 vehicles have a transfer case but all wheel drive vehicles have three differentials, one each in the front and rear axles and one on the T-case to take up difference in rotation between front wheels and rear wheels or else you get transmission wind up and excessive drivetrain and tire wear ( on the highway/road). The center differential lock is needed for true real world tough four-wheeling, or else you can get all the power spinning say the rear wheels ( if they be in mud say) and no power going to your front wheels. So the center diff lock switches you from all wheel drive to true four wheel drive for off-road. Hope this helped and didn't piss-off everybody. 😊

No worries, you're right. The confusion is that it has its own button, where most other vehicles have all the settings (4auto, 4hi, 4lo) all on one switch for the transfer case.

Good advice, I engage mine every couple of months. I never seem to have a problem with my AWD and electronic nannies. But we don’t get a lot of snow here. When it does I’ll usually lock the transfer case if snow is still on the roads and leave it in AWD for mostly plowed roads that are still spotty. I never seem to loose traction or have power cut dramatically with AWD though, 03 4.7L. If it is raining and the roads are wet I can put it to the floor and it takes off like normal. Accelerates hard with no wheel slip and no cutting out. Any rwd or fwd drive car I’ve owned the wheels would be spinning like crazy if I did that or traction control going nuts.

I put in a vsc disable switch that can be used in any mode. I use it mostly in all wheel drive (H4) for those snow days. Yes, the VSC light will come on during this. Doesn't rob the power away from you when you trying to accelerate on an on-ramp. I still get the alarm if I slide and it still controls the braking during a slide. Its the best thing I ever did. Living in Edmonton Canada, its a must. I can still use the transfer case lock as normal. In this case though, the transfer case doesn't need to be locked. When locked, its 50/50 but when its not, its 60 front/ 40 rear. I prefer when its not locked. i bought the circuit board from a Russian guy named KLIV on one of the forums back in 2008. Still working today. Just had to wire it in and buy a button for the activation of what I call "no headache mode".

re camera focusing issue, in case you haven't yet figured it out: when you have a backlit scene (source of light is facing camera lens), autofocus can tend to hunt, especially when lens is dirty as seems to be the case here (it's trying to focus on the dirt which looks high contrast to it). Thanks for the video.

The last snow I had in the Seattle area, I find that putting it in high four-wheel-drive and manually shifting into second or third gives me better traction when I’m sliding. Especially useful when you’re making that quick turn or a quick stop. If I just leave it in regular four wheel high, then I’m sliding.

V6 4th gen you can drive year round in 4wd. Its a mutli mode 4wd system its a 40/60 split. Locking the center 50/50 split . And yes the 2009 4th gen trail had locking rear diff with the same multi mode 4wd system only avail in a V6. Very hard to find one. I had a 2006 SR5 V8 and now have 2007 Sport V6. Miss my V8. Familiar with both 4wd systems. You can do a mod that shuts off the VSC and ABS with out locking the center. Check out the forms. The 4wd Sequoia's have multi mode 4wd systems too both generations.

I picked up an 06 4 runner V8 sport in Quebec a few years ago for 9k and drove it home to Windsor. It's needed some TLC since but it's an awesome truck (245K now). I was wondering if you ever grease your slip yolk zerk fittings. Shortly after I got home there were these horrific clunks when I came to a stop. Had to do some research to find out what was going on (thought the transmission was cooked). I grease it with every oil change and that keeps the clunks to minimum. Toyota should of definitely done a recall. They did on the Lexus GX 470. Great vids dude! Keep em comin. 👍

Couldn't agree more about the actuator. I under-used mine and although it now still works, I have to go super slow (2-3 mph) to get 4wd engaged. Sometimes, I need to back up to engage or disengage back into 2H. Kind of inconvenient, but I can't afford to get the xfer case ripped apart.

Growing up my dad always told me to just never touch the 4wd. He didn't know much about cars. I still don't know if the transfer case on my old explorer worked.

I had a customer with a 1st gen tundra with the same issue. It says in the manual to use it once a month.

The v8 4runner is fulltime awd. The center diff lock is just that. Because the awd 4runner has a center diff not a traditional transfer case.

1996 to 2000 year models have a rear diff lock that changed in 2001 to 2005 and on further was moved the the transfer case

Man when I first got mine and started friggin around with things, I had no idea about this since I was a new owner and it was barley engaging. Eventually it started to work but after 5 years of owning it and knowing about this problem I realize how close I was to being screwed into spending lots of $$$. Perfect example of use it or lose it!

The transfer case is always engaged. That switch is definatly a center diff lock switch. It locks the center diff.

On v8 4runners since they are full time awd they have a transfer case and a centre diff to allow the computer to use it in the awd.

Yes you need to use them regularly and change the fluid. Ford and GM has problems with their actuators as well on their trucks

I know you’ve got the Doug Thorley headers on there and they sound great! Don’t remember what exhaust you put on it. I’m looking at doing a combo of a Volant intake, Doug Thorley long headers, and a cat back exhaust. What would you thoughts be on this? Any suggestions or tips?
@CanadianGearhead

I have the stainless Gibson cat back. I did a video on it a while ago but might make another since the sound on it wasn't great. I've been considering doing an intake although I'm pretty sure the OEM one performs better

2008/2009 got a VSC off button, it’s clutch to be able to turn that off without using the CDL.

Great video. Using the parking brake adjusts the rear brakes so they wear evenly wi the fronts. And yes, they recommend I use four wheel drive once a month for at least 10 miles on my 2010 FJ. it circulates the fluids and keeps the seals lubricated. Actually Toyota 4 wheel drives are designed for extreme world use where it’s always engaged to deal with conditions they are used in.

Should you even use it once a month with Tundra's also?
@ding174

@@dalephillips8250 it helps to circulate the lubricants and keeps the seals from drying out.

I am pretty sure not all transfer cases have differentials built in but the 4runner does. Thats what allows it to be "unlocked" but when you lock it it functions the same as a part time 4wd without front or rear lockers

You're right, the V8 actually has a torsen limited slip diff in the transfercase to split the power to the front are rear in awd mode. The centre diff lock button completely locks the torsen diff so there is no slip at all. It's a beautiful system, and it works well.

Mine didn't work when I bought it. I kept playing with it and it started working. Then i did the once a month thing and it always had a clunk. Then I got invited to go offroading in Anza Borrego. I played around with it there a lot, after 7 hrs. offroading, It switches without a noise. It's buttery smooth.
