During the Covid Pandemic in 2020 Cornish fishermen have been faced with a huge challenge as their traditional restaurant and export markets dried up overnight. Many enterprising fishermen have began selling direct to the public and initiatives such as Cornwall Good Seafood Guide (a project of Cornwall Wildlife Trust) have been invaluable in putting customers together with fishermen and fish sellers. In this short film by Carrick Roads Media we meet Newquay line and pot fishermen Chris and Ben Lowe who choose to fish sustainably, providing a high quality and low impact catch. We also meet Barry Preston of Mevagissey who fishes using gill nets for mackerel. All his nets are equipped with dolphin scaring pingers to reduce the chance of accidentally killing dolphins or porpoises. We also meet Tim Marshall of Porthilly Oyster farm who for forty years has been culturing oysters and mussels in the Camel Estuary. And finally we meet Katy Davidson who has been delivering seafood from the oyster farm and local Cornish fishermen direct to their doors during lockdown and beyond. To find your local seafood suppliers who will deliver you fresh Cornish fish please visit our website www.cornwallgoodseafoodguide.org.uk
Also on the website there is loads more info on all of Cornwall’s Seafood, how it is caught and its sustainability, as well as practical tips, recipes and much more!
