Finding Dory is all the rage here in the summer of 2016 and with good reason. The Dory Tang or Hippo Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus) is a cool aquarium fish. It's both beautiful and active -- and has almost as much personality as Dory herself. But if you want to have a Dory tang at your house -- you need a legitimate marine aquarium. In this Fincast host John Carlin -- who has kept hippo tangs for years, gives you some serious advice on what it takes to successfully keep a hippo tang. Below you will also find some helpful links to fill in the gaps in John's advice.
More on Hippo Tangs including typical pricing.

I’ve had a blue hippo tang in my 55 gallon mixed reef aquarium for 6 years along with a yellow tang and various other so called hard to keep fish. I’ve got huge acropora colonies growing strong as well as other sps/lps colonies. And this entire 6 years I’ve had no sump no skimmer or any fancy equipment what so ever as far as filtration goes. All of my success has been achieved with just two seachem tital hob filters. As long as you do weekly water changes and all regular maintenance it can be done

I just got my hippo tang yesterday. I wanted a Dory & Nemo. It was $169 at Petco. So after a year of being saltwater I’ve finally matured at reefing and copped my only tang (DORY). I’ve had several clownfish. The fish I’ve had the longest is an ocellaris clownfish. It has killed every fish I’ve put in the tank with it. At least 8 more clowns while in my learning phase. So (DORY) blue hippo was out in the main tank while my clownfish was in timeout in my 5 gallon. The next day moved the landscape and added the clown back. Dory has established dominance and it’s a beautiful thing. I’ve never had a fish that could become dominant over the clownfish. There are several corala 🪸 of all colors and now there’s peace in the tank. It’s a beautiful thing 😊

Hey John you know this is amazing I'm so happy your doing this, because all everyone does is says "Oh u shouldn't get a Blue Tang or ur bad", but it's gonna inevitably happen anyway, kids want their fishies and parents want nostalgia. And these owners aren't prepared to handle them because all they know is "UUU R BAD U SHOULDN'T HAVE ONE" I appreciate this so much John, amazing work friend I really hope this gets out there. I'll try and tweet it at some people like the Hawaiian Sea Institute or whatever their name is lol. I've got a way with words so I get alot of convos with bigger people. Again dude this is amazing you don't know how happy I am to see something other then just copying the last person "Oh ur not supposed to gettem duh duh duj", really hope you get some well deserved attention man :)

I had one back in the late 1970s in a homemade tank that was 22 inches by 72 inches and let hair algae grow in half the tank. It did great for 5years and the tank sprung a leak and I gave away the entire contents of the tank to a friend with a 165 gallon....oh well.

Do what you want but please research why you shouldn't. These fish can't be bread in captivity so they are taken from the wild and if you don't know why that's a problem watch finding nemo again. Also these fish can get up to a foot long and they need a huge tank. In my opinion it's simply not moral to keep a fish tank, especially one with a fish as beautiful as Dory. Again, no disrespect, if you want a fish by all means do it, but do your research.

I would like to know at what point of time can we add a juvenile regal blue tang into a marine aquarium tank. I mean how many months of cycling is required. Mine is now cycled for about 5 months. It has one percula, one clarki clown and one humberg damsel. All swimming healthy and happy.
@fincasters
@fincasters 6 лет назад
I would go ahead and add the tang at any point now.
@ausreefguy5362
@ausreefguy5362 5 лет назад
Realistically you can do it straight after cycling providing you have a good nutrient export method in place .. algae reactor, algae scrubber, carbon dosing etc .. then it only comes down to having nori in the tank as much as possible so the fish can constantly graze throughout the day .. providing you get a small one this should be fine because by the time he's big enough to need mature live rock I.e eating the nori you add in one hit .. the rock will have matured.

I would say a blue tang needs a minimum 125 gallon aquarium (they really need six feet of swimming space)

You should be ok as they do not look alike. You may see some initial aggression, but I bet they will settle down.

I really concern about my tank, so I was like is it okay if I have dory "again"?? so in two years ago I had a 80gallon tank so I got myself a pair of clown fish and a blue tang, but it lived only for 3 month before it eventually died. But now I getting a new 150gallon tank that had been cycling for 2 weeks and I already added the "quick start" liquid. And around this week I really want to get dory again, so I doing my research to keep dory successfully, and I really need advise of how should I feed it, how the temperature, or anything else that haven't mentioned in this video, I need to know the weakness of the fish...so its really help if you guys have dory and tell me the crucial things to keep dory successfully, thank you:))
@Tasogare209

Honestly... fully cycle the tank and slowly add smaller fish such as a pair of clowns or something else that you like. Once you go through your ugly phase of the tank and coraline algae is growing and you have some corals doing well...(Then consider adding one) Tangs in general are sensitive to bad water conditions. Hope that helps. Video explains alot of good points also.

I have a 400 gallon tank with a 150 gallon sump in the basement. Is my tank large enough? My regal angle loves the room but I dont want to crowed her. She already laid eggs and we have 5 baby regals that survived. Its an awesome tank to see all my regals acting like a family. so magical.
@fincasters
@fincasters 6 лет назад
Sounds like an awesome tank! Congratulations on raising the regal angels. I don’t know what else you have in the aquarium, but you certainly have room for a hippo tang. Of course adding fish will change the dynamics of the aquarium, but it sounds like your system is large enough to add a hippo and several more fish if you want.

Am no quite sure if it's okay to keep a tang in a home tank it affects the ocean corals, I think you shouldn't get a blue tang unless you are quite quite sure you can keep it healthy and alive
@fincasters
@fincasters 7 лет назад
Typically hippo tangs will not bother coral. As to your other point, I agree completely about keeping only those fish you can maintain in a healthy manner.

I'd just like to point out that some of us do run out and buy a big box store tank and a hang on the back filter then buy a hippo tang. Some of us do plan to upgrade tanks and actually do it. It's all a matter of dedication. After my first wave of deaths (blenny, goby and a ton of coral) I was all but ready to chuck in the towel; I'm away 2 weeks of every 3 but my tang pulled me through. I couldn't bare to let it go. I've just made my first major upgrade which was 14 gal to 20gal with a sump. Ive built my own sump and started planning out the redsea 750. It does happen dont be so negative.

Steve says (rotter tube reef) What you talked about marine ich is BS, you had to starve them, keep your tank fishless for 6 to 8 weeks atleast Hhahaha i hate that way, i wish what you talk about the ich is true, its more easy to do

This fish is not easy. Ick magnet and gets stressed . Most people will not be successful with hippo tangs. Bad advice . The tank you show in video is expert level. Yellow tangs are better choice for beginners
