Speaking to the point the young man made about Jay-Z’s hair. Jay for his entire music career he built kept a college cut. Once the accomplishment was made to become a billionaire or whatever goal he had in mind. He then changed to do what he wanted. Moral of the story, Do what you have to do in order to do what you want to do.

Today, I wear slacks and button-ups, and is taken seriously every time I walk in a door to discuss business. ....and I'm. a bad brother too! Respect magnet. This is tough. I own software development company, an IT company, and a salon. I’ve been in the technology space as an owner for 6+ years, but the salon is a new investment and I am completely hands off. I have locs, tattoos, and close out the large majority of my clients while wearing tracksuits or casual attire. I would say that about 70% of our projects come from businesses with traditional C Suite employees, so I’m maneuvering in a corporate setting a large majority of the time. With that said, I do think a large portion of the pushback one may receive depends on region. You can succeed with locs in the western portion of the United States. I will say, Freeform locs with an underdeveloped vocabulary probably isn’t the way to go.

Telling him to cut his hair is an understatement. Having hair is a blessing. Most men go bald or start balding which is not a good thing. Even in the Bible shaving your head was a sign of grieving. It’s actually a negative thing. I would say and suggest that this young man and most black young men should keep up with the maintenance of their hair . You can have hair/Locs and still look presentable and welcoming and have a good paying career in or out of corporate America. It’s all about the wholeness of the individual.

@@shyne1308 no one said anything about how your hair relates to your competence, leadership or ability to do work. Normally people will start with a clean cut when they enter a work environment. The way that dudes hair looks makes him look sloppy and unserious. What Anton is trying to highlight is how he will be perceived in his career, which is important. Him changing his "look" can lead to him being offered more opportunities to grow and building trust. Nothing is wrong with having dreads, but his hair looks like burnt steel wool. He is still very naive and hasn't matured into his manhood. Yes, he 26 but he carries himself like an 18 year old. A man has to adapt to the opportunities he has, even Jay-Z had to "dumb down for his audience to double his dollars"... he started out as a real lyricist comparable to Rakim, Black Thought and Talib Kweli. That wasn't the wave that was going to get him to where he wanted to be so Jay-Z adopted a mafioso-rap image and persona, then he switched to a more glamorous, luxury presentation. There is a concept called "interpersonal tact". It contextualizes your leadership potential based on how others perceive your appearance, skills, and interactions with the group. This is an all-encompassing feature of leader expectations. Clean cut individuals will normally attract a more favorable audience than those who look disheveled. That being said... this man's hair looks CRAZY (no offense) and I'm not really for that messy/freeform look, but I respect it .. and I get Anton's point but I also understand the youngin's perspective (because I'm also 26) lol. Also, if you think about it, we're the first generation that really gets to experiment with our hair as black people without being completely frowned upon (it's just a shame that our own people in the older generation don't see it that way and are the main one's to down us for our newfound freedom of self-expression). If we're honest, we can name way more examples of successful black people OUTSIDE of rap and sports than we could 10 years ago and they're all doing JUST FINE. I also think there's just a TAD bit of underlying envy from those who are scared to (or just straight up can't) grow and maintain a healthy head of hair without the fear of other's opinions on it. I think the stage is set for us to escape the limiting mindset of judging someone by the hair on their head. It's 2023 and we're only going to start seeing more and more black men with grown out hair tbh. Just my thoughts.

I agree, he needs to cut that! People are going to judge. It is what it is. His hair is very uncomfortable to look at. I was the same way so I understand. My girl loved my huge nappy fro. Honestly women will say anything if they love you… But I was struggling to move forward in my career in mortgage lending despite my intelligence and innovative ideas. I cut my hair down a couple months ago, now I’m an account executive for Non QM/ Investment mortgages in the North East region of the US.

Most black men that level up in their life will eventually understand the power of their appearance. Examples, Lebron James, The Weekend, Robert Smith. Do whatever you want to do with your hair!

@Marc Ingram fuck a celebrity I'm talking for myself. I run a commerical real estate company with over 200 agents. Nobody give a fuck about my hair..yall to judgemental. If I want to sit at a desk job, that may be different but I'm not. You mentioning celebrities, I'm talking about me and my world. Nobody gives a fuck about hair

I think Anton is sending the wrong message to this young man. Locs are not the issue but how they are kept is the issue. Black people do not have great representation in the higher ups so we try to match the appearance of white people because that's predominantly the image of success. However, this can lead to self hate.

It's not about the hair, it's about a mindset that is reflective of the hair. This young man is a free spirit, and what's needed in the business world is someone who is reliable and disciplined.

Im so tired of black male producers and rappers, we need 1 million black boys in Tech, 1 million black boys in trucking and trades, and 1 million black boys in healthcare. That alone would drastically improve our community.

Dude need to chop that ish bro it looks like a struggle and a broke man’s mentality. Tell him hit me for a fade I got made videos of my cuts on my channel. I used to have a sponge curl with a clean fade and Kevin Samuels motivated me to cut it off and keep my waves

@@agendaxpushers1322 I have to respond with this: who runs corporate America? You guessed it, WHITE people. As a whole, they'd rather us not have locs in the workforce, especially if they're not neat. Now, I will say that he'd PROBABLY be taken seriously if his locs were neat.

@@agendaxpushers1322 I clearly said it’s a broke man mentality to think your can do whatever with your hair and get the same opportunities a clean cut same nationality man would get. At the end of the day I live in reality. I’m well aware that appearance matters in the workforce. This goes for in the military as well which I serve active duty in the army. Show me a General of any nationality that has a full beard…I’ll wait 😊🫶🏾

One thing you learn in life is that you pick and choose your battles. This is the wrong hill to die on, young brother. Not with a wife and kid.
