Sorry about the choppy editing on this one guys, it looked ok in the editing program! Was trying to make it less long and rambly but I may have made it less watchable instead...you live and learn haha
There's a place cheaper than where you are moored although I don't want to post location on a public forum. I'd be happy to give you the details if you want outside of a public forum. Anyway. I'm the guy who met Jon the other day when I was chopping wood... well last year in Sept/Oct? I just feel that you need information. I wish folks came to me to donate information lol I know what it's like being a lone starter with boat... Still am.. but with a little support. If you want to videocall, no worries. I think other boatbowners need to be more supportive of other boat owners... omitting being too close or touchy feely... there's a word for it but I can't think of it. Fair Winds Electro boat
@@sausage6984 Thanks, I have a contract here until the end of July anyway but could maybe reconsider location at that point...though convenience is important as I don't have access to a car! Is there somewhere I could message you?
You say you're an introvert, but holy cow, I couldn't imagine sharing that much candidly, so you get bravery points for that. It's good you're being cautious; I think that's approaching it right. I'm sorry you have to be so guarded in the first place, but it makes complete sense. It's good to see your positive attitude about the future. Keep that up!
I stumbled upon your channel after doing a RU-vid search on 'electric motor sailboats.' I'm finally taking sailing lessons. They will be on dinghy sailboats! Good luck on your adventures! ☀️🌴 🌊 ⛵
100%. The barriers are in our minds. It's a massive jump to buy a boat in the first instance. And when money is an issue, we have to use the resources we already have.
We were glad to see a Vegan doing sailing videos!! How amazing, sailing- and Vegan lifestyle totally seems the way to go! As we have a small boat plans for upcoming spring.. you and your boat are a great inspiration! Gonna find a Albin Vega hopefully soon. Good luck with your plans! Looking fwd to your next video!
Hi Beth, There is a lovely yacht club in Mumbles not too far away from you. I'm one of the admin on sailing and cruising Wales and Jennie Carpenter runs the ladies only sailing group on Facebook too. Your more than welcome to join both groups to make more friends.
Hi, I am in the Bristol Channel area too and would be happy to help out but to be honest I have about the same experience as you. I’m planning to get my own boat this year so if that happens you are welcome to join and crew. I joined a dinghy club last year to try and get better with the wind awareness after doing my day skipper and yachtmaster theory courses. That has been really helpful to take it back to basics and then hope to go back to big boats this summer. Also tried crewing on crewseekers though went with my partner because all the skippers were men and didn’t feel comfortable going on my own. Have also found the same thing with guy sailors (and not all, but they can have a tendency to not let you have a go at the skippering when you are ready) I am also an introvert so I with you on that. :) Go for it, you seem to have the drive to do it. I think you will get there if you keep at it. Heather
Hello I just wrote a comment suggesting to Bethany that she takes a third person with her for her safety when she goes sailing with a stranger from the internet offering sailing lessons. Maybe if you aren't confident to captain yet you could be that third person :)
@@davemillan3360 yes sounds like a good suggestion. I also forgot to mention. What I plan to do is take an instructor with me for the first few times I go out on my own boat as a refresher and lead up to skippering to see how I feel after that and build up confidence. Particularly in the Bristol Channel. There is someone at Portishead Marina who charges about £250 for this and I would like to do it for peace of mind. Would happily bring you Bethany as crew! :)
Thanks so much for your supportive words Heather, would love to come along as crew and you're also very welcome on board my boat of course! Is there somewhere I can message you to keep in touch? :)
so glad your not selling your home, i was looking yesterday to see if it was still for sale. i know what you said in the video but if you do want to go for a sail one day the offer is there
Good to hear you are following your dream. About lessons from strangers... chat with them on social media for a while of course, and also go onto facebook sailing groups and advertise that you are looking for someone as crew, this could be a novice sailor, or someone interested in going sailing with no experience... then take the person that offers you to teach, and a person willing to learn, that way you are with three people instead of just you and a stranger. The novice person could pay for the meals perhaps. That way they get to go sailing for cheap, and you (and them) get lessons without you having to feed a third person. I hope to meet you out on the water some day!
Hello dear Ivy, sailing passionate. Love your blog and your honesty in al regards! It makes it really pleasant to follow and give tenderness. I understand your situation makes it difficult to understand Nd recognize the intention of new friends and therefore it is not easy for you. I really hope you find someone that matches really to you AND your deep passion and meanwhile i am really happy you managed to keep your boat and keep posting in your very own and particularly way. Don't change! You are marvelous!
Heyo! First of all if you want to proceed sailing check this RYA Day Skipper and RYA Marine Radio (SRC) This will be your's start line in sailing. The second - 34 feet boat for solo living and sailing, imho too much and also too expansive. So my advise is to look for example to Rossiter Pintail 27 - this hull stays safe even for bluewater cruising as good as for coastal sailing. I dont think that simple swing or bilge keel is enough safe to cross the oceans. There are only 3 models of boats 20 feet good for oceans crossing - 1. Havsfidra 20 feet (Storfidra 25), 2. Midget 20 (Midget 26), 3. Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20 or Dana 24. In range 25-28 feet i can advise about less than 20 models of the boats good and safe for round the world sailing.
Yes, please be safe! Network with/through people you already know. Let them connect you with other trustworthy people. And remember, just because a stranger is female doesn't mean they're safe. Good luck! I'm glad things worked out and you get to enjoy all that hard work you did on your boat!
Good decision, your concerns about owning the boat are very valid, but like everything we do, when we want to we make it work. Remember this moment in a years time. Enjoy
Pity your so far South you would be welcome to come sailing with us, lots of good helpful members at Dee Sailing club. Most of your learning can be via RU-vid. Some good sailors out there sharing their skills. Take a look at Salty Lass, Patrick Lane, the Rigging doctor and many more. Good luck
I'm glad you are keeping the boat..... If I was you, I would try and get some crewing experience with a couple on their own boat... Get to meet them in a pub, to see if you get on with them.. Good luck !!
I Told You So !!! Good Choice - Good Plan. ps. Ya do NOT invite any male strangers to come onto your vessel. YOU are the Captain now. I suggest going to a Yacht Club and/or a Sailing School and taking a few free lessons and then you might meet someone without a boat who you trust enough to come aboard. But you are Strong Enough and Smart Enough to do this all by yourself !!! You dont need ANYONE Beth. Cheers -- Take Care
There's quite a lot of couples sail. Meet them, socialise and tag along. I wouldn't meet anyone from tinternet either. I have found that folks in the sailing world keep themselves to themselves. I don't get sailing offers being a man.
I'd like to fit solar panels sometimes this year. Where did you obtain the steel frame and where did you get the repurposed panels from and what is the wattage? How did you bracket the panels to the frame? I have davits on aft transom so I guess top of my head standing up would be ok but frame would kind of obstruct getting aboard via ladder... well, would be awkward
We made the frame using steel from a local supplier. Bought the panels new online, can't remember who from - Johnathan ordered them so I don't have the records. They are 400W each, so 800W total. They're bolted to the arch, the frames of the panels have holes so you can attach them. We made a video about the installation which might give you a better idea, the audio isn't very good on it though
@@BethanyIvy i thought about flexable panels but there's a few drawbacks. Places are standing deck areas require rear panel airflow a lot of wire front to rear So best option seems to hinged/detachable/ quick release or fold down arranged rigid panels....for rapid stowage in bad weather
@@sausage6984 Not sure that wind is an issue, I've had 70mph gusts at the marina with no problem! Plenty of people sail around the world with big fixed panels (e.g. Sailing Uma). No harm in making them detachable though if you prefer.
Good news your keeping it, would buying a smaller boat be better in the long run thought and get a bilge while your at it. On FB there is a page called "sailing and cruising wales" may be worth joining and putting the feelers out its a great local sailing community with some female boat owners if needed. You may find someone after an extra set of hands. If your still down cardiff yacht club or even c/bay ill give you a wave. 🙂
