Great question! We've just had a chuckle about this - we let a healthy layer of barnacles grow on the hull at the end of the season, as we don't sail the boat in the winter months. And they have turned out very abrasion resistant! Then after they have had a comfortable winter protecting our boat we scrape them off. But there's also extra layers of glass on the bottom for this very reason, and we also use a Copperbot type coating which is very hard wearing.
Barnacles for protection…that’s one I never thought of! Mine is in a creek with brackish water, so doesn’t get any fouling. I have used old car / van tyres before
This reminds me of designing and building my catamaran JANETTE she is 36 feet built in cedar strip plank and epoxy ' she also was designed to sit on the bottom but she uses lifting rudders and dagger boards and like Wild Honey has two yamaha high thrust outboard engines. She was built in a barn in sections and transported on a trailer behind a VW car to Ravenglass in Cumbria where she was esembled and finished.
I'd love to be able to personally inspect my own mooring as you're able to! I feel sure that my 20m of ground chain lying never less than 12m down in mud must suffer minimally. What were the sizes of the old and relacement chains by the way? Very professional presentation too!
Thank you for the feedback! We had previously used 19mm chain, but had it replaced with 16mm because there was a shortage of 19mm. And that is what we have now used to replace the smaller size :)
100 MPH wind on the river is amazing. Didn't realize the storms got that strong there, but it seems you're on the Southwest coast of the U.K., facing Atlantic storms.
Great videos. We have just bought a small catamaran. Are you able to discuss how you go about getting the permission for putting in a mooring. I had not realised that this may be possible. Many thanks.
Thank you. It really all depends on where you live and who owns the mooring rights, and then you may have to contact the MMO for guidance on suitable ground tackle
I can't wait to know more about the cat. is this the first boat/cat you've made ? i would love to do the same, but on a smaller scale as I'm an hour from any sea. can't wait to learn more as there isn't many videos out there about building catamarans
Thanks so much for the feedback! Wild Honey is the biggest cat we've built, but Laurence built 2 x Woods Striders and a Woods Pixie before this one. Richard Woods does some nice, simple and easy to build designs that sail pretty well - if you're looking for something with easy plans to build at home :-)
