Part of the Community Music in Canada research project, this micro-documentary features the project Naskwahamâtowin, or Let’s All Share in the Music project in central Alberta, Canada. The project was led by Kehewin Native Dance Theatre in collaboration with the Canadian NGO Make Music Matter, and was made possible through a grant by Bell Let’s Talk with support from the National Music Centre in Calgary. This music creation project combined Make Music Matter’s Healing in Harmony therapy model with Indigenous music, languages, and culture to help address the mental health crisis in the community and other effects of intergenerational trauma. In this documentary, project leaders describe impacts of colonization, the uses of music in healing, and the imperative for culturally-informed, geographically specific practices that centre children and relationships.
