World Record holder Ryun had won 47 straight 1500m./miles going into this race and in their previous meetings completely dominated Keino.The Kenyan,fearing Ryun's awesome last lap kick set off on a suicidal third lap of 58.1 seconds to try and nullify the threat and it worked a treat.Keino was no less than 6 seconds ahead at the 1200m. mark.Although Ryun rallyed with a last lap of 55.7,closing to within 3 seconds to take the silver,it was never going to be enough.Decades later it still seems strange that Ryun didn't react quicker to Keino's third lap burst....it's not as though they were strangers to each other.To be fair,Keino's time was the second fastest 1500m. ever run...a classic.
