Yes, and this makes his interpretation of the Honky Tonk Train Blues sound less conventional than Keith Emerson's. Which is great playing, no doubt about it, but - in a more old-style Boogie-Woogie way. Peterson's wonderful feeling for the swing is just the topping on it.
RIP Keith Emerson; RiP Oscar Peterson...how can we every thank you for sharing so much talent with us all, as with this piece, three minutes of life, love and happiness from a world fucked in every direction by hatred. I hope this garners hundreds of thousands of views and comments. If you read my little contribution, tell me, as you watched these two guys, and the accompanying musicians, including a some guy, Palmer, on drums, play this music: did you smile, did it make you happy for a moment?.....every time we lose a musician, a little happiness dies with them🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Can we please stop all this juvenile bickering about who wins the playing contest here ... Keith was honoured to guest on the show as OP was hailed as the best jazz pianist ... even keith himself would never have said he was as good as Oscar ... I'm watching this on the anniversary of Keiths passing and the comments are very upsetting .. please also remember that Keiths piano concerto and his other compositions (Tarkus orchestrated) plus the music of ELP are being played by musicians of all standards all over the world now as benchmarks of 20th century classics ... Keith wasn't just a piano player but an innovator, composer and inspiration to thousands of keyboard players worldwide.
They're both such pros, if somebody dropped the curtain, Oscar could play Keith's part and vice versa and nobody in the audience would be any the wiser - any arguments about who's best are TOTAL AND UTTER BULLSHIT!!!
If you research a bit, you can find interviews in which Keith said that playing with Oscar scared the crap out of him. He admitted several times that Peterson was a huge influence and that Peterson was a completely superior pianist. Conversely, Peterson said in an interview, that his son was watching ELP during the famous Cal Jam performance on TV and called his father down to listen to Emerson's piano improvisation. Peterson was so impressed that he contacted Keith and made this performance happen on his TV show. In summary, Peterson's piano skills were superhuman with perhaps Art Tatum and few others in that technical league. However, Keith broke composition and performance ground playing in a style and manner no one had ever heard before. As a composer, Peterson doesn't have anything in his bag comparable to Tarkus or Karn Evil 9, though admittedly that was not his genre. I love and miss them both.
Night and day, One played the score with a nicely areanged wind indtrument session but a stiff bass player. Peterson improvised few notes with his unique blues feeling . Palmer on the beat rushing to stay on time Peterson layed back as only great black oianist can do.and he had a different bass player who at the end of the day it is what really makes the difference.
KE...OP.. ohh my god.. he was built to the last fingers in his bones. Listen to the his right hand tones. EP is delivering the rhytm and OP is cutting thru the sounds.. thats was what we need for ebony and ivory.. no contest but this is what we need, encompassing each other..love u both..
Hey, the reason Mister Emerson took this gig was to force himself to practice. Keith's original recording of the Meade Lux Lewis tune was much better. He should have just improvised a new solo, I still jam over some of Keith's ostinato's.
A lot of people blowing smoke here. Allow me to say this. I knew Oscar Peterson. I considered him a friend, and I assume he considered me a friend. I had a concert hall named after him. So, perhaps I knew him well enough to say this: Oscar *never* played with sub-par musicians. Ever. if it wasn't good enough, he wouldn't play. And so, if he played with Keith Emerson, it was because he though well enough of him as a musician to do so. Good enough for OP, good enough for me.
Having been the culprit who detuned Keith's piano for this session of Oscar's Piano Parties at the Shepherd's Bush TV studios I have to take issue with most of the above comments which favor OP against Keith. Oscar was a very genuine and caring individual who was gracious at all times and of course the consummate professional who exhibited the utmost compassion for all musicians, as far as I was aware. After this particular concert he invited me to his home where I tuned his piano. (contd.)
I don't know why people so often have to argue over who is better in these sorts of things. I just enjoyed two legends performing and I am certain both of them thoroughly enjoyed it.
+Daniel Heslop Daniel: This is true, although now we have the means to interact and display our opinions. This is why we have talk radio and television for politics, news, science, nutrition, financial, entertainment, and sports, etc. -- along with millions of topics on computer social media. This is how many people make their living and others make a killing. Our job is to live and let live or chip in and put some bucks in people's pockets.
It's amazing how contrasting the styles are, makes for a great listen, i think everyone knows that Emerson cannot touch Peterson as many people have stated - but that's not the point, sometimes music is about the feel and doesn't need to be the highest level of virtuosity to be good. I think everyone should just quit bitching and accept that these guys can play the piano better than we can ever dream and we should enjoy what they bring to the table irrelevent of who is better!
Oscar Peterson is a jazz pianist genius.Keith Emerson is a great rock/blues/jazz pianist also. They are different but why compare ,.Enjoy!! Both combined talent and hard work to get where they are. But Peterson cannot be denied as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.
Great footage here everyone . Both having fun of course . Both of these guys are gone . Have respect its not about being the best its about living for that moment . God bless them both and my god it must be one hell of a show up there 😉👍
Superbly brilliant playing from two very different styles of player. RIP Keith and Oscar you provided so much joy and entertainment to so many people during your careers.
+MorbidManMusic Why can't you just enjoy the thought? His comment isn't at all pushing religion. He's simply imaging a nice hypothetical scenario. No need to be a jerk.
Nonsense. The Bible makes it clear you shouldn't do it but no where does it condemn a suicide to hell. You go to hell by not accepting Jesus as your savior.
This wouldn't have come together in the way it did, had either of them not been there. Both are absolute legends with very different approaches to the instrument, and they're both the greatest at what they do for what they do is truly theirs. Surely Keith might stand out a bit from a traditional jazz perspective, but jazz too is quite progressive and Keith pulled it off tremendously. Cheers in Keith's and Oscar's memories, and may their legacies be carried through their music for ages to come.
Both played brilliantly both play different styles and they both respect each others work. why on earth does the internet feel the need to compare them why not just enjoy this video for what it is, to piano/keyboard/Hammond Greats enjoying playing with it each other, not fighting just jamming.
That's what I noticed also. I am a diehard lifelong ELP fan, but I must say that Keith seemed nervous, while Oscar was just jamming and enjoying himself.
great enhanced HD video . Emerson was to the rock hammond what Hendrix was to the guitar, and what Gene Krupa was to the drums. This rare footage of the giants of rock and jazz keyboards preserved forever.
C'mon guys, this isn't a competition, they aren't even playing the same style in this track, I consider that great and that is why I like this version so much, listen to the music as a whole, not as "keith vs oscar with backing musicians".
Lake and Palmer) ??? Salut!!!
Yalic Nurdov Tu as raison Yalic.
It's not a contest because it couldn't be. Boogie woogie from someone that grew up around it, and playing it with some of the top players of its era. The difference is in the execution. Speed vs finesse, both done excellently.
I love the emotional contrasts in this performance. Emerson is palpably concerned, smashing that bass like a pounding heart. He’s a rhinoceros while OP slinks through the rhythm like a snake. What kind of jungle has just one? Long live Lux Lewis!
Magnifique !
Peterson is as far, for me the best of the two pianists: much more improvisation, and his bassist plays a real walking, whereas Emerson always plays the same things, and his bassist doesn't play a real walking!
Sad loss - Keith was sensitive, and eventually trolled to death by his so called fans. He had a medical condition brought on by his dedication to the keyboards and at the age of 71 this amazing pianist felt the need to commit suicide, because he couldn't play like he could 30 yrs ago. Shame on the fans who trolled him.
Agreed. But those trolls coudn't give a damn. I met Keith in Liverpool and he was a nice , humble, guy and the Liverpool audience had a laugh with him which he enjoyed.
The scum that trolled Keith were not "fans". I hope they all end up somehow disabled worse than Keith and then maybe they'll understand what he was going through, although I won't hold my breath waiting for any of them to realize what horrible human beings ( ? ) they are ! RIP "Fingers" AND RIP Mr. Greg Lake. Two of the greatest musicians in rock history !!!!
R.I.P Oscar P. Glad to have met you in real life. It was one of the greatest moments of my life to shake your hand and talk to you. Im sure you are jammin´ it up with the other jazz-cats in jam-session-heaven!
great job, and I think that's Carl Palmer sneaking in on dreams on Keith's side? And it ain't a contest - of course Oscar Peterson is legendary jazz and Keith is legendary prog-rock -- but you can tell Oscar enjoyed himself (man he can really swing it too).....
Two giants in their selective music fields. Part of the beauty of music is diversity and interpretation. To get critical here..Keith and his bandmates seemed abit nervous....who wouldn't be with a master like Oscar Peterson watching you play and performing across from you. After listening to this a few times, I realized that the drumming and bass playing with Keith's ensemble did not have fluidity that OP's did ( some timing issues). There is a stiffness there. When Oscar comes in the music seems to breath. Oscar's fluidity in the jazz idiom is masterful and his ensemble was impecable.. That said, this is a wonderful thing to see and hear. Both men were extraordinary talents and gave of themselves a hundred percent to their audience.
Complete bs. I don't know what you mean by fluidity, the bands are playing totally different things. Keith is playing hard boogie, why Oscar is playing more jazz/blues with precedence towards jazz voicings. Nervous? Hardly. I don't know if you play but this is not a particular hard rendition by any means, anyone there can play this song with their eyes closed, on multiple instruments. This is not something they get "nervous" playing.
in the UK we rule the keyboard genre...Emerson, Wakeman, Lord.....All greats, but Emerson in my humble opinion is the better showman and has a greater diversity of styles.....But Peterson......well the man is a god of pianos.......look at his left hand.....
Well now just a minute here. Keith and Mr Lord are gone and Wakeman is long retired. Loved them all esp Keith. But Jordan Rudess currently holds the Heavyweight title in the multi genre keyboard arena. And Rachel Flowers (Google her) is currently performing Emerson's music better than anybody has ever done. Pretty sure they are both from the USA although I should probably check that.
Line-up: Keith Emerson (R.I.P.) - keyboards Carl Palmer - drums Roy Babbington - bass & Oscar Peterson (R.I.P.) - piano Martin Drew - drums Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen - bass
I was lucky enough to see this when it was broadcast live on TV. OP introduced KE by relating the story of how he first became aware of the young man's talent: a family member had been watching ELP performing at Madison Square Garden on TV in another room and called to OP to come and see 'a brilliant young jazz pianist'. They then showed a clip of what OP saw on the TV as he entered the room - KE sitting playing at a grand piano as it tumbled through the air on a huge mechanical device!
Look at how relaxed Oscar's hands are and how tense Keith's are. That says a lot about why Keith had so many deep problems with his chops in later years but Oscar kept blowing to the end, even after arthritis had begun eroding his style. Kudos to both great keyboardists, though.
Keith looks like he took all the speed before this performance :D Talk about being stiff! Oscar of course is playing his tasty licks in a normal relaxed manner here but Keith is just rotating the same stock licks. Of course ,playing with Peterson, one might get little drained.
Fantastico!
I love Keith Emerson as one of the best multi-keyboard players of the 20th century..............but Oscar is just sitting there like the shark in "Jaws" waiting for dinner.
@@Minotauro_di_Chieti wisely said. These guys are more fans of Oscar Peterson than connoisseurs of both works. Most likely do not know the Classic Emerson Works, only ELP. ones, which are just majestic.
Still watching in 2019 and still can't get over OP's left hand walking bass line and Keith's consistent rhythmic left hand..if you wan't to be the best piano player, you got to have that left hand of theirs, not just lightning fast speed right hand solos..and some to think of it, if you know these greats well, their left and right hands are interchangeable.
