Its so sad that Keith Jarret(77) always like to play on stage and...its not possible anymore...today we can watch him on Utube...thank you ..3.7.2023...His music and improvisations will never go away....thanks to the people,and his idols and fans of the global internet music jazz history......
The thing about Jarrett's interpretation of Standards is he seems to never leave the song, the tune, even as he plies it rhythmically, harmonically he inserts just the right amount of chromaticism to enhance the changes, they are always clear because he always hears the greatest note choices way ahead of time so he has plenty of time to let them com through. Even when he employs substitutions (as on the great intro to 'The Days Of Wine and Roses', from 'The Complete Live At Blue Note'), he always seems to be playing 'them and variation' on the song itself.
His restraint, his absolute refusal to waste a note or hit the wrong one - his utter commitment to stay true to the greatness of the song -- is mind blowing.
Cesare Paolino hey man... You should transcribe it yourself.... All of the value (at least almost all of it) in transcribing is the work done... It is amazing ear training and is very teaching. :)
I can hear in KJ's playing that he is exploring every tune each time he plays it. It is amazing to me! No standard licks or phrases. He plays different every time in a way I've never heard from even my favorite legends. A true artist this guy!
Yes, he’s truly listening for The Music, moment to moment. And his dedication and willingness to explore this exquisite level of listening and searching gave him the courage and internal permission to allow those vocalizations to emerge. There is an interesting interview somewhere where he talks about this, i found it related to a video about him accepting some lifetime achievement award.
Jarrett is a good example of a musician who does everything necessary with his body to get every note, every chord, just the way he wants it. Monk was like that, too.
@@hatch113 A parallel to Jarrett in the classical world would be Glenn Gould, who vocalized so loudly the recording engineers had to put sound baffles between his head and the piano microphones. I love Horowitz and Gould equally, but for different reasons. And Bud Powell, the greatest jazz pianist other than Art Tatum, growled his way through his solos as well. Bud was a genius. I look at it like this: each player is different, and can only be truly appreciated on their own terms. And of course, we're all free to not listen if we don't like it.
Err.. Chopin relies on embellishments and ornaments to create expression in music.. if you want classical music that speaks more with less said, look into Bach and Mozart.

Keith smokes the intros, head and outros of everything he plays. I've stolen one of his arrangements for the intro to "You don't know what love is" for solo guitar. It kills! The dude has such breathtaking sense of harmony. I love listening to these concerts! Mind you, his vocals need work... ;)
Jarrett is so talented. He is not only a very talented jazz musician but also a composer drawing from all genres of music. If you have not seen him play classical or blues, you have missed the whole experience of Keith Jarrett. Superstar in music!

YSB If you are being sarcastic: He's right, KJ's technique is absolutely terrible. I can only imagine what he's going through physically after playing like that all his life. I can't look at him play it's too painful to watch.
YSB I’m almost a year late on this, but every time I see Jarretts hands play literally anything, my hands hurt. Lol. It looks so painful. I don’t see how he hasn’t ruined like every tendon in his wrist yet. But nonetheless, he’s by far my favorite musician yet. My whole style revolves around Keith Jarretts sound.

First saw Keith as part of Charles Lloyd's group around 1967. I was transfixed by a very young man who was in such complete charge of the music. Then the ECM years, when I saw him at a former rock venue where the lights and amplifiers kept going out (overloaded because it was very hot and the airconditioning kept blowing the circuit breakers). We finally made do with neither lights, amplification nor a/c, and it was total magic. Perhaps the best single concert I've ever attended, and that's saying a great. great deal

we all should be grateful that we live in the same century with Keith Jarrett. I think one cannot compare him to anybody. He is one of a kind...With too much coffee in my head i still must cry when i listen to his music! Nevertheless he is a human being. Thx for uploading
So much more composed, must be my age because today’s “virtuosos” play at 11 all the time makes for great social media video, but just listening to composed interactive playing is amazing.
All three are fantastic. Somebody somewhere else wrote (but with benevolaentia) that Keith have great voice and he even knows a little bit to play the piano...

First time I heard Keith Jarrett was via an LP at an impromptu party in a small adobe home in Santa Fe a day or so before Christmas, and snow was on the ground and the pinion wood smoke was everywhere. I thought, "Man this guys really got something." I've not changed my mind during the 40 or so years that have followed.
Some critics find Keith Jarrett self-indulgent with all the moaning and gyrations. I might agree that he is self-indulgent, but I don't care if what pleases him also pleases me. And by that standard shouldn't all sincere artists be on some level self-indulgent?
Self maybe in the sense of fully absorbed in the musical exploration and the complete committment to it, regardless of how some others may perceive it. I aspire to such overflowing levels of expression...
He's a genius, for sure. I would like to suggest you also listen to the recording from his 3 days at The Blue Note. I find that version of Boy on Green Dolphin Street even more of a most blissful place!
These melodic lines are so perfect and beautiful that I think they are not improvised at the moment but built before and learnt by heart from Mr. Jarrett

The coda section beginning at 5:24 is otherworldly; the vamped, repeated rthymic groove they all play is just so beautiful. And then soaring high above the foundation laid by this vamp, Keith plays a gorgeous lyrical soprano range improvisation that just floats above the piece and sounds so heavenly.

every piece JK plays is utterly filled with extra beauty, unexpected findings and this unequaled satin-like sound he gets from the keyboard. JK leaves me in awe with his playing. I so love this man.
I first heard KJ on a listening station at a record store back in '96. Hadn't heard of him before. Only reason I stopped to listen is because I liked the album cover. I bought it right then and there. It remains one of my all-time favorite recordings to this day. So much so that I fall asleep to it every night. I'm so thankful the album caught me eye and drew me to it. Otherwise I might have never heard of him. Makes me wonder how many other brilliant artists I've yet to discover.
So wonderful, lord lord, imagine if we could have also heard what Jack is really doing...ohh well, we get to hear Gary and Keith killin it, and well recorded those two instruments
You are right about the headphones. I bought a pair of Sennheiser a short time ago, and although the music is good through the speakers on the computer, it is better through the headphones. Wow!

The thing about music is you get to choose what you like and what you don't. There's no universal standard for whats acceptable and whats not; as long as your music is entertaining and enjoyable to at least one person, it was a worthwhile endeavor. Which is why I don't get the point of criticizing an obviously accomplished musician on a forum like youtube. Yeah, we get it, you didn't like it, someone somewhere in the world was bound not to. Not like you intend teach him any better ...
