Guys like Keith and Bon Scott,John Bonham;etc have always saddened me. The battle that goes on inside geniuses like these guys has got be so damaging to them. always being torn internally. Just awful. The saying goes “It’s a fine line between genius and insanity”. And these guys were the kings of riding the razors edge. As a musician I miss the talents of each of these individuals. Gone but not forgotten.
Well- an English narrator. Hagman was a beast of an alcoholic too- known to be constantly drunk on the I Dream of Jeannie set! Funny they were friends, as both are on my top ten list of most attractive men of all times ( along with Marcelo Mastriani, Bowie, Buster Keaton, Gary Cooper to name a few)
RIP Keith. Fame sent him nuts, and he did not know how to handle it, the debt was a sign and , (drugs, booze)- all pressure releases I guess. So sorry for his wife, she must of had many nightmares, and constantly worried. That aside, he was a brilliant drummer to say the least and learned me a lot sadly through his mistakes.
I always thought the spirit of the late British character actor Robert Newton attached itself to Keith somehow someway. Keith died on my 15 tj birthday September 7th 1978. All my birthdays have sucked since then. In a five part series about the 1971 album. Who’s next Roger was listening to Keith’s drumming on Baba O” Riley he isolates Keith to Rogers singing shakes his head and starts laughing. The Ox listens to My Wife turns down the sound to just his bass and Keith’s drums shakes his head and starts laughing. Glyn Johns who produced and was the engineer on Who’s Next listens to Behind Blue Eyes and says”and here comes in Moonie “shakes his head and starts laughing. A few weeks before I was listening to Bargain heard Keith again on that song for about the 2000 th time shook my head and started laughing. Not a laugh of derision. But like the other three men a laugh of like Am I really hearing what I am hearing. Nobody can play the drums that brilliantly!!! But Keith Moon could and did. Freaking awesome!!!!!!!!
Poor old Keith he would have been diagnosed with some kind of hyperactive condition nowadays, unfortunately he created a reputation that he felt he had to live up to no matter what , that put so much pressure on him socially that it eventually killed him....
he became friends with larry hagman when they appeared in the movie that i'll be the day. You know keith was a major alcholic when larry hagman an alcholic himself is stunned by how much alchohol and drugs he used.
I wonder if doctors would have been able to treat his multiple illnesses with substance abuse a little better in this century. It seemed like people knew less then.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?
Poor Annette. How awful to find the man you love dead. And she certainly loved him, or she wouldn't have stayed around during this most difficult period in his life. Bless him, he was such a complex character, and showed definite signs of mental illnesses such as manic depression and possible schizophrenia (though that was possibly induced by the alcohol). Such a shame that he didn't get the help he needed.
After reading his biography, Los Angeles was really a sad deal for Keith Moon. He grew up idolizing surfmusic, dreaming of bikinis and blonde girls. He dreamed of moving to California and living next door to Steve McQueen! And of all these things, none of them were as sweet as his imagination. He was a hit when he first got there and threw lots of big parties in a series of rented homes. But the story is the same as everywhere else. Due to his constant Insanity, people stopped answering his calls, and stopped coming by. He purchased a home on the beach he could not afford, and found out that Steve McQueen did not want to be his friend. They were friendly at first, but there was an episode between Keith and Steve McQueen's sixteen-year-old son. The best guess is that it had something to do with drugs. But no one in that town ended up wanting him anymore, and he wore out his welcome, while at the same time running out of money. He flew back to London defeated, humbled, to work on the Who Are You album. Probably should have stayed in England.
I lived very close to keith in chertsey surrey and chertsey was certainly a great place to live when I was growing up full of eccentrics , viv stanshall and other less famous names, remember going to school "which was a stone's throw from his house at the bottom of st Anne's hill ,chertsey" and the road was cordoned of and as I got closer I could see why ,Keith's brand new rolls Royce corniche was wedged half in a ditch and half in the school fence ,A truly great funny kind eccentric man , Just wish he had lived to tell the tale I know people in chertsey from that era have some very funny stories to tell about keith .
WTF? IS EVERYONE INSANE HERE? KEITH MOON WAS THE GREATEST DRUMMER AND CRAZY CHARACTER THAT EVER LIVED IN CLASSIC ROCK! WE SHARE THE SAME BIRTHDAY WHICH IS AUGUST 23RD. I AM 55 YEARS OLD AND HAVE BEEN A WHO FAN SINCE I WAS 12! HOW CAN ALL THESE COMMENTS BE SO FUCKEN NEGATIVE? I HATE JUDGEMENTAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT OTHERS HAVE BEEN THROUGH! DO YOU ALL KNOW THAT WHEN HE DIED HE WAS AT PAUL MCCARTNEY'S BIRTHDAY PARTY SOBER? YES, SOBER...AND THE PILLS THE DOCTORS GAVE HIM TO HELP WITH HIS SOBERITY IS WHAT KILLED HIM??? HAVING SAID THAT, YES, HE WAS "MOON THE LOON" AND COULD PERFORM AND KICK ASS ON THE DRUMS WHILE TAKING ELEPHANT TRANQUILIZERS?!!! I DON'T AGREE WITH THAT BEHAVIOR, BUT GOTTA GIVE HIM THE MUCH DESERVED RESPECT SINCE MOST DRUMMERS COULD NEVER COMPARE TO HIS TALENT, NEVERMIND WHEN HE WAS ON INSANE PILLS! RIP KEITH, THE BEST R&R DRUMMER THAT EVER LIVED!
Chances of surviving ... "None"!?! ... I don't know, but wouldn't one want to present a slitrher of hope?, however small. I think I would want a second opinion.
Exactly. I fail to understand- after all that she put up with and went through with him- why some people still think that she was just scrounging off of him.
I like the girlfriend- nearly fiancé- said she didn’t even know who Moon was when she excepted his invitation.they were both tens in their youth- she a sexy model, and he ‘ The Who’s main Pin- up’ in the words of Roger Daltrey
then keith moon was a little bit like me shy, quiet but when drink become the one: talker, funny, ironic, crazy, the guy that every girl loves and that atracts everyone. sad.
Well, wherever you put a person that ill, is fine. Just get the person to a doc, I guess. That can be the first step. I guess if you are starving to death, it doesn't matter what food on the plate you start with. In the same way, get help from someone somewhere.
Unfortunately, my inspiration from the first time I was aware of Keith Moon, was Keith Moon. I was driven from age 5 (in 1957) to play drums, that was a given. I remember playing along, with real sticks, on cushions, to Radio Luxembourg hits (the BBC hadn't caught up -me still haven't!) When I found a band, I became Keith. Drumming-wise I was technically more capable than the Dear Boy, but I was.....just....more than the average local muso. I played drums/vocals/keyboards/comedy across the UK/Europe/US and made enough money to support my family. I am now 67 and retired after a ridiculously dream-like life in music in which I met Chuck Berry, played with the Four Tops and the Temptations More importantly, I have been married twice and still love my wives and my ridiculously talented daughters. My Grandchildren are beyond my capacity to understand, I try, but usually fail. I am currently halfway through my last binge on alcohol. I still play drums, with my daughter and granddaughter in a brass band. Thank you Keith John Moon.
Couldn't control his personal life . Always abuse his body with booze. Back then you didn't have places to go to for rehabilitation or support groups to help you. Friends weren't much help then.
I have the same problem as keith..Thank god Im not a rock star, that would probably kill me faster..Please keep my family and friends near me and love me!
Mr. Iggy Pop, after The Stooges ended in 1974, was checked into an insane asylum because of heroin addiction… when you hear the doctor's assessment at the end of this video, it makes me wonder if Mr. Moon might've been saved with a similar measure.
i love the arm chair psychiatrists, especially from those who knew him. Few if any will truly understand the demons that lay dormant near the surface of Keith but it's hard to stand by and let those who weren't even in his inner circle at the time smear his image. If you couldn't keep up with Keith at the time I honestly think you're opinion is near invalid
I just finished his biography, a long book. It appears nobody could keep up with him. For a night or two maybe, but not day in day out. Dougal, for one , lived with him for years so I trust his opinions.
Cooper was pretty hardcore actually. Watch footage or pictures of him from the late 70's early 80's.....Alice pushed his body to the absolute limit he was a legit maniac when he was freebasing crack.
