The value of water outdoors is just immense. And the number of times you need a water bottle in daily life... In this regard might as well invest in it. Titanium is also a new thing you just want to experience. So i have just bought the Keith. I worry about the cap system because water gets between the thread and freezes there in winter, probably locking it. May have to make a better cap for winter use.

I’ve had my Heavy Cover canteen set for 4 years, it’s one of my favourite items. I like to use it for coffee almost every morning. I have a few other items that are titanium & love how light & strong Titanium is compared to other materials. I still like stainless steel & made my first loaf of bread in my new 16 cm Zebra pot last night. So would I buy the canteen again if I lost this, I think I would. Not cheap but the old saying “ Buy Once Cry Once “ . Definitely worth it to me, I bring it with me all the time.

I own this set and the pathfinder two cup canteen set. Using both in field I love the Keith cause of the well spaced out cup handles... You can use the fish mouth spreaders Pathfinder school sells them it works well on this set as a way of suspending over a fire... I've used that method effectively so far. I dont do much camp fires lately due to heat... Use this with firebox stove works great... I own the Keith TI newest mess kit similar to the M-40 but its not worn well on me as this canteen has...

@@MarkYoungBushcraft Yes sir. It is. I wish they had included a wind shield like the old M40 but they didn't and told me no plans on doing one. So I am in DIY mode. Only issue I have with this kit is the short handles on back and the floppy handle for the pan. Other than that works well with trangia stove.

Mark, I have a Pathfinder GI Canteen. I made some mods. It has a Jolmo Lander 800ml butterfly cup instead of a 500ml cup. It has a twig stove. It is great as a Survival Canteen. Or, I call it "I don't have to worry of getting lost in the woods" canteen. With this set, I don't need to carry an extra wood stove in an havresack. I just need to turn the stove upside down, The grill is at the bottom and the opening is on top. And, the fish spreader becomes the grate to put my cup for a tea. Yes, it's not light but it's my Life Insurance policy. Thanks

I own the Keith titanium set that is the focus of this video. The one thing that I would add about it is keeping that seam clean on the interior. I find that over time a plaque can build up in this area that can be difficult to get at. Easy enough with a stiff brush with handle long enough to get to the seam, but it is inconvenient if one were to use this set for say something like hiking the AT or other long distance trail hike. The other issue I have with it is that it doesn't fit well into the side pouches on my pack. If using the supplied pouch and carrying it as you do, then not an issue. I also have the cylindrical titanium water bottles which are much easier to keep clean imho, fit into my side pouches and nest quite nicely with titanium cups and a titanium French press I sometimes carry. As always, good stuff Mark. I do have a question for you though as I have been contemplating getting the Oasis bottle and wonder how it would nest in the titanium kidney shaped cup?

I use mine all the time and have never had anything build up on the seem. I use it to boil water regularly and that in itself keeps the seem clean for me, it's not like your cooking food inside and there's stuff to get caught in the seem, so I'm guessing you don't filter contaminated water enough, I fill up from streams, rivers, occasionally lakes if clean enough and the kitchen tap before I head out, I use a cotton bandana folded over as many times as possible to cover the top and that filters any water ive used enough. I've had mine over a year and I've only scrubbed out the inside 3 times, the first of which was when it arrived brand new. I also have and use the round titanium 1050ml bottle and honestly the shape is the only noticeable difference and both are just as good as eachother.
@garywood702
@garywood702 2 года назад
@@MDM1992 I suspect because you are boiling water in it regularly that you are able to prevent the plaque. I do not regularly boil water in my water bottles and they do develop plaque. I've even bought plastic surplus Swiss Army water bottles and used hot water and soap to clean them and was quite surprised by the amount of black plaque that came out of them. When cleaning the interior shoulder of my stainless bottle with a damp paper towel a fair amount of black plaque is often removed. Based on that, I have no doubts that plaque would build up on the interior seam of the canteen based upon the way I use it. I'd be curious to know if you were able to get something like a cotton swab or a piece of white paper towel or cloth down inside your canteen and wipe along that seam if it comes out as clean as you believe it to be. When I look inside my wide mouth stainless bottle I see nothing, but when wiping that interior shoulder with a light colored cloth or paper towel I'm sometimes disgusted by the grunge that is removed. Now whether that stuff poses any health risks I cannot say, but it's not something I want to be consuming if I don't need to.

Look like a good kit, Mark. But I had my fill of military style cantins in my service days. Mine was made with some cheap stainless steel which rusted in spots and stamped US 1945 on it. (No, I did not fight in WWII. Our army was supplied with WWII era US equipments.) Keith products are quite well made and the quality is spot on but where I live they are prohibitively expensive. I am waiting for your review of the cylindrical bottle set though. Thanks for the great review, Mark.

Amazon also a G.I. Issue Canteen Cup stand used with either heating tablets, sticks or the small size Sterno cans for Cooking or Boiling Water in the Canteen Cup. I used one for years in Germany in the Army during Winter Training with the Small Sterno .A small Alcohol Stove would also work as they are about the same size as the Sterno. Amazon also has a Stainless Steel G.I. Canteen reproduction of the ones used in WWII and Korea. The mouth is smaller than the one in the Video and the cap is on a small chain .I used to see the Original Issue ones in Surplus Stores back in the 1980's. I bought the repro. version but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I was issued both type Canteen cups over the 23 1/2 years I was in the Army and the style you used is a lot more Stable but the folding Style can be held right over a fire so both have their Pro's and Con's.

Hi Mark, you always do a nice and thorough job on your reviews, so don't worry about that. I will state for the record that though I think the titanium is awesome considering I'm and older guy and always looking for lighter weight kit, I am not buying at $160 USD. I have had these canteens in the back of my mind since they came out for years now, but either I will die, or the prices will come down eventually, and I am no cheap skate either. I am perfectly willing to pay a premium for a bit of top quality kit, but at the end of the day. it's a canteen set, stamped out on a big machine in china. If it were made in the US or other allied country, I might make an exception - might. One other gripe I have is that these chinese companies insist on selling SETS, and I hate that because I might want to buy a piece or two at a time. Or, if a company has several items in a set, I might not like all of them and if I can buy individual pieces, I can cancel out purchasing an item that I never wanted to begin with. You can use your Rothco kit for an emergency winter kit in your vehicle now 🙂 All the best from New England, USA.

As I was interested into self reliance on any adventure given. I studied military and civilian based cooking and mess kits. And came to conclusion that having two of the canteen + cup sets made from titanium, is best in terms of ergonomics and comfort. As it gives you around 2x1L of fluids, easily accessible. Two cooking or eating containers with respectively 3/4 volume of the canteen. The shape is user friendly based on pre WW1 design and because of this it will also fit with military issued covers from any modern era of mentioned design. The lid is an extra utility and could be kept on the bottom of the pouch due to shape. I know there are kits with two cups stacked, which makes it even more compact + you can improvise G.I. style stove that fits canteen with cup. With that being said. If you have good adjustable canteen pouch to the system you like and containers are made from lightweight metals. The full weight of the whole set shouldn't be heavier than 1,5kg and that includes water inside!

Thanks Mr. Young for the video as always very comprehensive. I wanted to ask you two questions: 1- Have you ever had problems with the sealing of the cap after putting the bottle on the fire? 2- Is it safe to use the bankline to hang the bottle? Doesn't it dissolve or release harmful substances? Thank you
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 2 года назад
I have had no issues with warping or otherwise changing the shape of the bottle but to be clear, I do not put the cap into the fire with the bottle. I think it is how you use the bank line to suspend the bottle. If I use it with the toggle system I showed I would be sure to have a low fire or hang it high enough away from the fire to ensure the flame does not touch the line. I don't know how much chemicals would be released from the line if over heated but I would avoid that if I could. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting

@bangalorebobbel 2 года назад
Excellent review, thanks. I've got this set long time back and I'm happy about most of the aspects of it. The quality is outstanding, like with everything Keith produces. Just wanted to add some thoughts/experiences to your review. First of all - yes the bottle is made of metal and can be used on a fire, but why would you want to do that except in an emergency? If one uses the gourd on fire one has to properly clean it before nesting it back in the cup, else you will get always any tar or sooth etc. in your cup and then you have to clean the cup before next use. Simply rubbing the bottle with sand etc. isn't enough to remove all the residues, and some of them might be even poisonous so better avoid getting such stuff in your cup. So for practical reasons, I always avoid to put the bottle on a wood fire or Esbit, and there is usually also no real need to do so since one can always use the cup for heating up anything. Secondly - I have no complaint about that set in a sense of disfunctionality, but there is still this one little irritating issue. I'm using several water bottles (stainless steel and titanium) which have all the same diameter on top, and I'm used to have on all my bottles the same type of plastic lid (it comes as replacement/spare part on Amazon and has a shape that I can put my finger or a carabiner through the top) which is nice light weight and absolutely tight. But the diameter of this bottle neck here is different, so these standard replacement lids don't fit in. And even though the original titanium lid is fine (but heavy compared to the plastic type lids) it makes sometimes metallic scratchy noise when you open/close it, so better don't use your bottle whiles watching shy animals or when you have to hide from any whoever ... ;-) Third, the carry bag is technically ok (even though I don't really like the plastic carabiners) but I replaced it long time back and use a thin nylon bag which is even more simple and lightweight, similar to the one you showed with your other set. That seems to be also the only way to have a different color option since Keith offers only the standard sand version (no camou or black etc.). Fourth, what about the price and would I buy it again? The price is crazy, absolutely no doubt about that. As it is crazy for almost everything made from titanium, compared to the prices for the same things made from other materials. But of course I would buy it again if it gets anyhow lost (and I cannot imagine any other reasons why I would have to buy it again for myself), and just to say it: this set is also a great gift option, I guess you cannot make anything wrong if you gift this to an outdoor enthusiast (except he/she owns it already, of course). Finally, there is one big caveat about titanium gear in general, one should always tell this issue in order to warn innocent people. It usually doesn't happen with other materials such as stainless steel or aluminium or plastic, at least that is what I observed. The big problem of titanium gear is that if you start with one piece, you become immediately addicted to that stuff and cannot avoid to continue buying more titanium gear, usually replacing over the time all your good old stainless steel things you already have since decades by all that new titanium stuff. That might create a whole bunch of serious problems like running out of storage space, getting seriously questioned by your significant other why you purchase all that stuff again, and running out of money. And there is still no therapy or something like an anonymous titanium users group, afaik, so you won't get help if needed.
@MarkYoungBushcraft

You obviously have lots of experience with this kit. I think the best piece of advice is about how addictive buying titanium can be. Thanks for commenting

G'day Mark, the very first question IMO is kidney or round. Yes the slimmer contoured profile of the kidney does lend itself to carry about one's person, however it aint that much slimmer and personally I don't want my water too easy to access, if you take my meaning, i.e.. How many times do you see on the old westerns where those circular disk jobs are unexpectedly down to the last drip, lol. Of course there is the issue of neck/lid diameter too, if it matters to you. Btw; I really dig your carabiner trick. The ol' fish spreader works a treat too and toggles for a back up method I reckon. Whilst I do appreciate the properties of Ti. Is it worth the dough ?.... yep agree on a spare cash day, sure; but since I'm not a gram counter, again concur, it's down the priority list. Ultimately a Grayl + a pathfinder s/s round bottle/mug set is hard to beat for all occasions IMO. Thanks for the vid mate, interesting and informative as always. Cheers Duke.

Good logic. Despite having this piece of kit I find myself carrying the round water bottle more. Maybe just old habit. Thanks for commenting

Doesn't Keith also sell the stove that the canteen slides into? I puchased a cheaper stainless set. I believe it was sold under the name Boundless Voyage. If I was an avid hiker like you I would have spent more for a titanium. I mainly purchased it with hope one of my grandson's would get interested in more outdoor activities. Maybe someday one of them will.

Just ordered it. Don't have it yet. I want to get a stove for it. Well, "stove" is a confusing word these days. What I'm wondering is whether the original issued US GI open top stove fits the canteen cup of Keith. Do you maybe know?

I think it may be worth making an update video. Truth is, I have used it a fair amount but not so much lately because of the other products I have been testing. So far, I would say this is a good as it gets quality wise. Thanks for commenting

Keith makes no mention of the silicone seal being safe to use this way. In fact I would think they would advise against it as I do. Thanks for commenting

I'd not leave the gasket in. If force in a bit of thumb meat (lol) it will roll right out, to pocket somewhere. In that, there's more room for venting while top screwed in. I've not done it for heating. Just something I saw on another review...but I did just now try and get the gasket out and it was simple. ~ Wet gasket may make the thumb slip off, just try again. I got the Heavy Cover one (same canteen kit) which came with an additional looped plastic cap. Came with No bag, but I wanted a kit bag that covered the top due to falling debris anyway. And wanted a kit bag with a couple chipmunk cheek pouches. So I ended up getting a Helikon-Tex, Essential Kitbag, which is nice Cordura. ~ Shoulder or belted carry. tips me hat ~

Great review, I have had one for about 2 years now. First thing I did was throw away the included pouch. The field bottle is great, I use it all the time and really like the wide neck. And it is nice that you don't have to turn the cap 30 times to open it like with nalgene bottles. I bought a Miletc field bottle pouches and it fits in perfectly. They have molle attachments and fit perfectly on Savotta Jääkäari M or L hip belt, always in easy reach and with one on each side it saves a fair bit of space in the pack. Is it worth it? For me any gear that you get pleasure out of using is. Back then I purchased it for €150 🙈

I assume you mean for camping and not home emergency preparedness. Some time ago I purchased a Platypus bag to add to my Sawyer mini to create a system. Worked fine but slow. The full on Platypus Gravity Works system looks great but is costly at MEC. I intend on using the Membrane Solutions system I reviewed when I go camping this summer with my wife. I have confidence it will do the job and at a more reasonable price. Thanks for commenting Jim

I'll tell you what is a deal breaker for me personally... the butterfly handles. I despise anything with butterfly handles. I don't yet have the pathfinder canteen but if I could only buy the cup I would. Ideally, assuming they fit, I'd use the pathfinder canteen cup and the Keith canteen to cut down on the over all weight but to me the extra handle that provides another leg for stabilising the cup as well as the slots and d-rings that allow for an added extension is better. In every other way I do prefer the Keith. I think the PF one needs to be changed some. For instance the Keith lid has a square handle on the top which allows you to lift it with a fork and that is better and of course the weight is much lighter. Personally I did find food getting stuck more with titanium but that isn't a deal breaker for me.

@tacopeel7941 3 месяца назад
@MarkYoungBushcraft yes I agree, regular sanitation is always necessary on any drink vessel. However this one has a large unseen lip under the neck. (At least mine does) you can't see it but can definitely feel it when reaching inside the neck. I was expecting a smooth, easy to scrub transition, just like an older stainless version. 🫠

Using a carabiner/karabiner to grip the opening of a metal water bottle (for the purpose of putting said bottle over a fire - and pouring) is not something I have seen before, and wow that seems clever; I intend to tinker with that concept. I realise this is a review video (and I personally have no intention of buying the product - sorry!), but I thank you for the innovative ideas that you show.
