I went through a rough break up and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was something my mind kept thinking of as an option I wish I had because it hurt so bad. In the movie the breakup wrecks havoc on both characters emotionally and they each go to a doctor to erase each other from their own memories. That line in the song, she’s basically catching herself in the emotional roller coaster of suffering and being hurt by someone and still missing them. She wants off the ride. Unfortunately, healing takes time. Glad she’s in a better place now. The movie is a must see because both Kate Winslet and Jim Carey give stellar performances!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was a reference to the movie, but she's talking about how she wishes she could just forget her ex, especially the bad times. She said jokingly on her show if that was a real thing and she said that it turned out it wasn't.

Gilbert- this reaction was really awesome! I love that you were just as excited to hear Kelly’s new singles as me! I don’t know who’s the bigger Kelly fan lol I like both songs you reviewed here, both were very openly heart wrenching thinking about what Kelly has experienced. Kelly really bares her soul and shows so much emotion and conviction and introspection! Like you said, it’s almost like hearing a diary entry in a way. And, Kelly’s voice is absolutely beautiful and powerful in both songs! I love how great and confident she is sounding! Like you said, Kelly is in the same league as Celine, Whitney, and Mariah! One of the best singers ever. I can’t wait to hear Kelly’s new album in full!
Hahahaha! I love how we are both rabid Kelly Clarkson fans. She is amazing. And yes, she does bare her soul in her songwriting and signing. We are all about her hear her diary in music form and I can’t wait! It’s going to be EVERYTHING!
i love your analysis! Personally, I have never given up looking for the right person (not just romance) even though I have been tremendously hurt and traumatised by people. In terms of the "hero is me" interpretation, I do think we have to contextualize what she was saying too. She realized that she has to love herelf and not expect others to "complete" herself. Beyond that conversation, perhaps her faith in God has turned for the better.
I completely love this album. Rock Hudson is sad in a way, as she includes the lyrics 'by the way, piece by piece', I found put my hero's me. Usually, on any album, you get 3 or 4 songs that you repeat, but with this one, there is at least 7 ones I play over and over. I love 'I hate Love' and 'red flag collector.
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind….she later references “can you take it all away, take it back to nothing”….just like in the movie, removing the couples memory of each other to avoid the pain. 💔 Ugh!! Kills me she carried all that pain.
So agree with you, and very psychologically intelligent...so important for everyone...it takes both God and me working together..he is there always with and for me...and i have to make my good choices, every single day.
Leslie! You have no idea how much that means to me that you said that about our faith and never putting that much of a load on someone. I was disappointed as well when I heard that part but I agree that she will get there. There are still pieces to the GREAT puzzle to come. I get eye rolls sometimes when I say these things like this (trusting only in God wholeheartedly), but it is the truth and I always hope to deliver things like that delicately. I never want to come across as someone that is condescending but when you know something so strongly that can really help someone, you want to shout it from the rooftops! Nope - not Mariah Carey . . . Totally Kelly. And she did NOT "put so much" on Blackstock, the weasel. HE was the one who couldn't accept that her whole-hearted LOVE was enough. He needed her to NEED him, as well. He is fully culpable in this. And what's more - he not only took HALF of income from the songs SHE wrote, and SHE sang - but he is getting six figures monthly in spousal support - because the weasel that he is couldn't create something of his own. Just like his father (who cheated on Reba, her mother-in-law) - he cheated on Kelly, then tried to accuse her of cheating (can we say "gas-lighting," boys & girls ?) - and NOW he and his father are suing her for MANAGEMENT fees they say she owes them. I have no sympathy for Brandon Blackstock (or his equally horrid "father" - apple didn't fall far from THAT tree) - and I hope she eviscerates him. If he was a man, I'd slap him.
Hey. Thanks for the reply. I agree that Kelly Clarkson is her own artist, ABSOLUTELY, but that definitely doesn’t mean that she wasn’t inspired by other singers that have gone before her. She has named Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey as vocal inspirations to her on many occasions. Kelly has a whistle register and uses it occasionally. It’s ok for me to refer to Mariah as a possible inspiration to Kelly. And yes, I’m not saying that Kelly didn’t make it her own… she absolutely did, but it’s fine for me to highlight that singing that high has been made popular by Mariah, someone Kelly admired and respects and is inspired by. Actually, on an episode of The Voice, a contestant went really high nearly the same note she sings here, and Kelly blatantly mentions Mariah Carey. Not sure why you feel the need to “defend” Kelly as though I’m attacking her originally. I’m not. And of course Kelly put too much on Blackstock. She literally admitted that in the clip that I featured in this video where she is talking to Garth Brooks. She has learned and that and that’s what this album is all about. She growing and maturing and bringing us along for the ride. It’s a great time to be a fan. Not sure why you feel the need to pushback as though I’m wrong for highlighting the growth that she is achieving as a person and artist. I think it’s exciting and makes me love her more for her vulnerability.

I am nothing but objective and supportive of Kelly. I'm a huge fan of hers and I said nothing against her at all.
