She took Simon’s criticism back then so well! No whining, no bad attitude, no arrogant body language. She just quietly listened to him and kept improving week after week. She’s a true CHAMPION.
Exactly. What good is talent if you can't take constructive criticism & direction? Last thing Simon or any coach in sports needs is someone who has an attitude & refuses to follow directions & advice. Music producers know hundreds are looking for that big break so the last thing they need is a diva. Kelly has no ego, just a desire to do whatever it takes to be better. Confident yet grounded.
Two thoughts. Kelly’s character has never changed and never altered by fame, and 2nd her vocals have just gotten even stronger as her career has progressed!
All that thing with Simon not being impressed and not remembering her, nothing but pure and unadulterated TVbs. Simon knew what they had there. It was all for the show.

Leslie Anne Vital Well people forget how good Tamyra Gray was look up her Idol performance of “A House is Not a Home” and I think she should’ve won. Kelly is a great singer but there have been way more powerful voices come through that show like Jennifer Hudson’s. Kelly is a great songwriter and pop artist and that’s also why she’s been so successful. But Tamyra Gray gave the performance of that first season in my opinion. And Tamyra should’ve been head to head with Kelly for the win, not Justin he was a joke.
@@travet1000 half true, they were literally handing out papers desperately asking people to audition and were worried the show would get cancelled if things didn't work out, especially that they started off with some stupid acts who believed they can sing

The fact that she struggled with the pain of laryngitis and still sang her heart out really shows how much she wanted this. Now look at her , a multi-platinum star that still holds a beautiful personality.

Seemed to be the thing. Everyone that did amazing that Simon still berated won. Kelly, Fantasia, Taylor Hicks, etc. They all had amazing attitudes, too.

She has a great personality... that's what won America over. So glad she is able to thrive in the music industry. She sounded tired and strained most times, because of the endless practices, but when she finally got in the studio, her vocals has gotten better. Go Kelly!

It adds to her full being. She needs both to be a talk show host. Also she must have a lot, she won an emmy! I loved ever since American idol.

That's exactly what i was thinking when he was saying that to her. That he wasn't as impressed with her when she sang RESPECT, as she was in her audition. I think it helped her to practice more and become even better than she already was. He know how much potential she had / has.
Don't bring some Simon well thought out plan to bring her along. If it wasn't for the other judges, Simon would have eliminated her before the top 10. He is indeed stupid, and has been brought along and saved by his connections with the Illuminati.
Kelly has the best personality ever I saw her once at a live charity performance that was on tv and she kept on joking with the audience and you can tell that no matter how famous she gets she will always stay trust to herself
She said she had a dream since she was a little girl of singing at the Grammys or another award show! And her dream came true! She has already hosted the BBMAs several times, and she sang brilliantly on that award show.
The control in her voice completely changed when she sang natural woman & it was mind blowing! To hear that transition from a beautiful voice, to a breathtaking one. I’m presuming the judges back then just wanted to hear their natural voices to see if they could work with what they’ve got? All Kelly needed was some lessons in the control of her voice & bam.. amazing. Always loved Kelly. Amazing wins - & her spirit is just lovely x
I know this is two years old, but this is my first time seeing it. IMO, the other songs were spot on technically, but "Natural Woman" had heart. She felt it.

Pretty sure when she sang RESPECT, everyone watching on TV was like "Okay.. who is this girl?" From that time I wanted her to win, and sitting here in Canada, I was like "DON'T SCREW THIS UP AMERICA!" LOL So glad you all were smart.
Luckily she was on the first season. In later seasons, the young adolescent female voters started deciding the winners of Idol, and talent wasn't their first priority, cute boys were. Indeed, because the producers of the show failed to adjust the voting process to stop those young adolescent females, they continued year after year pissing off their viewers until finally their audience was so small that it could no longer support the show.
I remember watching her sing that back in the day and I was thinking the same thing. This girl can sing her ass off! She owes Aretha so much, because her version of Natural Woman was insane, too!

After ALL these years, I still cry when I hear her sing her very first song "A Moment Like This". She sings with so much honest emotion, it makes the listener feel her lyrics.
The moment she switched sides with Randy, that was a sign she was destined for something great. My heart melted when she squealed at the very beginning of "A Moment Like This". You can hear she's truly and genuinely excited she just won the most popular show on earth at the time. So happy for her. She even has her own show now. Yeah, Daughtry and Carry Underwood are the only 2 Idols people remember now, the year 2019.
Kelly never got a big ego. She never changed from the sweet person she was to the one she still is today. That's why she's good on her new talk show; she's natural never fake.
I love her voice the way she hit the high notes and go low and hit the low notes. Kelly put so much emotions in her singing that she makes you feel every note.

I have never watched her whole journey before, this just makes me so happy. She is such a genuine beautiful soul and her voice is a conveyor of stories in a very unique way. So happy for her success.
Even now after she is really popular, she is still super nice, great sense of humor, and her voice is still amazing. I think at of all the singers today she is the best role model :)

It's funny to go back and listen to her singing at age 20; she was off-key several times and often sounded pretty rough during the American Idol competition. But, you hear her sing today, and she's just superb. You can tell she's worked really hard to perfect her instrument over the years, because now she can sing anything, on live TV, in front of an audience, doesn't matter where, and it's just damn near perfect every time.

I remember watching finale like it was yesterday. I was a fan then and have been ever since! Her concerts were regular events for me and family. She is a such an amazing and authentic person. Adore her.
I watched this whole first season with my late husband. We loved Kelly from the beginning. It’s been wonderful watching her career. I especially love when she sings blues.

I remember my roommate in college rooting for the guy (at the finale). I didn’t really watch the show much. But I liked her song when she won, and I have liked her since then. Glad the British man didn’t make her cry! 🤍 Definitely love her.
