If you haven’t watched her acoustic performance of this that she did in concert, that’s gonna make you bawl. It’s even more intimate. I can barely listen to this version anymore because I immediately think of the live acoustic one.

I can't believe how expressive and malleable her voice can be! Yes, she has spectacular range, control and technical ability, but her greatest strength is her phenomenal versatility and being able to evoke any emotion effortlessly.
I know "Underneath The Tree" will be Kelly's trademark holiday song for decades in the future (for good reason); however, there is something about this title track (Wrapped in Red) that creates a perception of bringing us right back to our teen and early twenty years. For many of us, it's the era in our life where we are trying many different things for the first time, and it's scary. We're probably on school break during the holidays, which gives us the time to reflect and think about what's important. In this song, the writer is going to "put all their cards on the table" and tell that special someone how he/she really feels right around the holiday season. Ladies and gentlemen, there are many lifelong relationships and multi generational families that started with "risking it all" that one time. I love how this song creates that visual.
I was going to write something very similar, but I found you already opened the door. I totally agree with your post. Christmas is a time when so many people fall in love, like a Hallmark movie. My own love story doesn't revolve around telling anyone I love them for the first time at Christmas so I can't comment about that, but I know a few people who did. Some were family and some were friends. I can happily say that all families that were created from those experiences are still together! But, what I really wanted to say was, Christmas is a magical time when the desperate heart wants SO BADLY to compel the mind to convince the mouth to utter those words. How beautiful is it that two people, boy and girl, who grew up together as friends (Neighbors? Classmates? Best friend's friend?), always there for each other, suddenly find themselves thrust in that unwritten No-Man's land when, like the words of this song say "I'm gonna risk it all", one of the friends -- who has been harboring feelings of love for that other person for a long time -- breaks away from their fears and tells the other "I'm in love with you". It takes tremendous courage to risk the possibility of losing a life-long friend in hopes that friendship becomes more that it ever could before. Yes, sadly, there are many rejections, but also joyfully yes, there are many, many relationships that have moved beyond mere friendship to the ultimate friendship known as marriage. I can't think of a greater joy that marrying your BEST friend. My ex-wife and I were never each other's best friend and we had an extremely rocky 9-yr marriage, and our two young sons saw nothing but fighting between us. She also committed three affairs all the while accusing ME of doing the same. No, I did not. After our divorce, she IMMEDIATELY hooked up with, and married, another guy and they had a daughter. They're still married and I'm very happy for her. Today we're friendly to each other. Plus, I gotta say he treated my sons well. I also met a woman (the night before my ex- got re-married !! How's THAT for coincidence?) and dated her for 3-4 yrs. before we married. Why so long? I NEEDED to make sure she was my absolute best friend before going down that road again, and that she was going to be a good "mom" to my kids. Let me say the God answered the prayers I didn't even know to ask. Not only is this beautiful creature my BEST friend, she's been an INCREDIBLE "mom" to my sons, and an ASTRONOMICALLY FANTASTIC "mommy" to our own daughter. We celebrated 20 yrs of marriage this year, and I'm excited for the next 20. Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to get that off my chest. Merry Christmas everyone!

Everyone is commenting on her performance, which was spectacular, (I'm a 55 yr old dude and this song even gets me sometimes emotional) but did anyone pay attention to the actual lyrics in the song? THEY'RE the beauty of the song. Desperate hearts searching for love. That's what the song is about, and the lyrics spell that out beautifully. Every Christmas countless, nervous, restless hearts the world over start beating differently because someone has fallen in love with someone else and wants to desperately tell them. But, out of trepidation, and very real fear of rejection, few people have the courage to approach the person they fallen in love with and tell them "I love you." "I want to spend the rest of my life and grow old with you." "I want to have a family with you." "I want to hold hands and share intimate moments with you, etc, etc, etc." But, not knowing if the other person will return the same feelings, or reject them because now the friendship has changed to an awkward one causes so much stress and heartache. The results can be ultra rewarding, or extremely devastating. It may even end the friendship. That's the risk that has to be taken, but one has to be willing to take that risk. This song is sung from a woman's perspective, but the "game" is played by both sides. Men and women, both, lay their hopes and dreams on their future at Christmastime. Here's my advice (like I'm anybody to give it !)....... Those of you this year who are betting the farm on whether or not to let your feelings be known, you should already have some sort of sense that the other person may be receptive to your proclamation of love and desire before you venture out beyond the safety of the dock into the deep waters. Love is NOT a feeling. Love is a COMMITMENT. Telling someone you love them is DEEP WATER, for sure, and it's not to be taken lightly. For those thinking of taking the plunge, GO FOR IT !! The rewards are infinitely worth it. But, IF, you get rejected, YOUR WORLD WILL NOT END. You can be disappointed, even devastated, but DON'T do anything stupid or irrational. All it means is that you miscalculated the relationship. It happens. Take time to cry, sob, eat ice cream, or whatever. But, get over it and move on with your life. The sun will still rise the next day. This gives you an opportunity to re-evaluate yourself, your ideals, your morals, etc, and try again with someone else another time.... .....perhaps with the person who was the one God actually intended for you to be with.
That's how I feel about this song. I have a mad crush on someone who is my old neighbor I grew up with but married to someone else. It's agonizing. Then I find out he's moving to another state. I feel awful. 😢
Damn I am becoming more and more a fan of hers, usually divas lose their voices in their 30s, Mariah, Leona, Whitney. But it seems like Kelly has kept it in great shape.
