Thanks for all the bonus info you share while tying the patterns - Newbie here, and info such as how to tell good fur from bad will save me much time, money, and frustration. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos :)

So glad I watched this. We use Zoo Cougars more than anything else for night fishing in northern Michigan (Au Sable) and get strikes when nothing else seems to interest the trout. The few dozen we bought from Slide Inn are gone or pretty well worn, so I wanted to tie some this winter. Learned more in this video than any other source for deer hair and feel prepared to replenish the stockpile. Thanks very much Kelly for helping us with selecting, preparing and spinning..... pointing out how to avoid pitfalls that would spoil a good tie. This is a watch every year video IMO.

Can't afford the time to tie anything other than experimental flies these days, but it is a joy to see the artistry here! Years ago we had trout in an aquarium along with a sculpin. "Sculpy" survived several years and numerous attempts on his mortality until one fateful day he became trout chow. It was fun watching the way he hopped around while avoiding the trout. I ordered some of those Hareline Premo Deer Hair strips and got exactly what you said...one of the colors I ordered was reall nice and the other had hair like half the length and a ton of fur...it was garbage...like you said

With the duck flank feathers, I get only one or two feathers with straight shafts from bags at my local fly shop. Is there a way to get better feathers in bigger bags?

"marrying" a feather is when you take dif feather strips,ie,wood duck,swan,,pheasant and align the rachis of the various fibers w/ each other and use the barbules on each rachis to bind to each other to present the appearance of a single feather w/ different colors or "stripes" of color,matching is when you pair two feathers like for the zoo cougar wing or a classic Rangely type streamer........

I fished with a guy up in Ontario around 20 years ago or so. He told me the zoo cougar was named after him. Not sure if it is true or not. His name is Scott Smith.

I still have issues with the spinning, I did how he did and mine always seems to go like 2 and half times around. Could this be the base layer of GSP and it being so slick or or do I have crank down more with my first 2 wraps?
