Kelmarsh Tunnels & Disused Railway Full Explore
In this Disused Railway Explore we visit Northamptonshire on the former Northampton to Market Harborough Railway.
Closed in 1981, we begin our journey at the former Kelmarsh Station before following the route towards the Kelmarsh Tunnels.
First arriving at the Up Tunnel which is open to the Public, we venture over to the abandoned Down Tunnel. Walking the full length we appear at the South side before walking back through the open Up Tunnel to where we began.

I always admire the thought given to the design of the portals. It would have been cheaper and easier to have a simpler and more utilitarian design. It illustrates the pride of the railway engineers.

I thought it was high time I shared a comment on your channel as I watch your video's with great interest. I find the approach you take to documenting your adventures brilliant! What stands out the most is that you obviously research the locations thoroughly and include historic photos of what the places used to look like, that I find absolutely fascinating. Never seen white plates on refuges before. They looked pretty clean, quite recent? Didn't notice any in the "open" tunnel either. Nice to see an old tunnel getting used.👍👌😁

Thank you for the video, I did this walk about 5 years ago, obviously I didn’t do the unused tunnel, my dogs didn’t like the darkness and pulled me towards the ventilation shaft and sat in the daylight! But with torches I got to finish walking the tunnel.. your video is a great reminder of that day

My father-in-law lived at that station back in the 60s his dad was a signalman in the signal box that was at the station There last name is Taylor

There are plans to reopen this railway from Northampton to Market Harborough, that would be great. Nice explore, and relation to the old pictures of the railway are a great addition.

That was fascinating, I did Great Oxendon in the summer and got some great photos, so as soon as we are all allowed out again then I am off to Kelmarsh. You mentioned the Station a few times but we didn't see it, does that mean it's privately owned, or did I just miss it?!!!

The Reason one side has Water Channels and the other doesn't is possibly because they were built at different times the one's with Shafts were later the Original Tunnels at Both Oxendon & Kelmarsh did not have Shafts! I Hope this is of some use

Getting good with the graphics!!! 👍🏻 Couple of anomalies here - no vent shaft in the disused tunnel, one portal completely different to the other three and how did you manage to get in, I knew those bent bars weren't big enough?!!! Refuge No.3 - language Timothy!!!

It's interesting that the one that's publicly accessible doesn't have any lights. I wonder if anyone's caught out by that and has to go over the top instead.

Ant, another cracking video. Looking on google maps there appears to be only 1 ventilation shaft, did it service both tunnels, or is one bore without a shaft?

I wondered that too. Tunnels are far apart, but the economy and logistics of using shared building access/ventilation tunnels would be high.

Only one tunnel has a vent, the newer one, they were an aid to building the tunnel more than for ventilation

Hello again Ant, just wanted to say what another great video from you. Just a couple of questions for you, if that's alright? In the disused tunnel that you went into first, do you by any chance know what the white blocks in the refugees where all about? Was it for strengthening perpuses or something like that? And in the second tunnel, again with the refugees, do you by any chance know why some were part blocked up? And finally, have you ever thought about going through Thurgoland tunnels in South Yorkshire, and the tunnel in Chesterfield yet? Anyway hope to hear back from you soon mate. All the best from. Mike Wood they often brick up refuges in tunnels open to the public to stop nasty people hiding in them and attacking lone walkers.

Hi Mike I've seen the white plates before I think in Boughton Brake Tunnel. I believe they act as reflectors for the locomotive lights to hit so to advise the driver of them. Hope you are okay 😃

Hi. Merry Christmas! Two questions... First, what place was 13 miles from the mile post? Second, so how did you get into the second tunnel as that gap between the bars looked (and sounded 😀) very narrow? Thanks Phil

Hi Phil same to you 😀 It could be Market Harbrough, seems about that distance. I guess you watched it to the very end then 😂 I forgot I had my bag on so that got stuck 😀😂 Same entrance just sideways

@@TrekkingExploration Mileage is from the Northampton end - Duston West Jn - south of Northampton on the Blisworth to Peterborough line (the lines at Duston West Jn closed 1959/1969) - mileage continued through Northampton station (0m71ch) and the Northampton - Market Harborough branch left the current ‘Northampton Loop’ of the WCML at 2m32ch. Continuing through Pitsford & Brampton station (on the current Northampton and Lamport Railway) at 4m71ch and on toward the mile post at 13. Kelmarsh Station is at 14m03ch, with the mileage terminating at the junction with the Rugby to Stamford line (closed 1966) at 18m 45ch. Market Harborough station is another 12 chains further on and another 18 chains beyond that is the junction with the Midland Mainline.
