Inside Kelvinside Ghost Station and Balgray Tunnel 🚫
(Now known as the restaurant "1051 GWR")
A beautiful building by architect John James Burnet - built in 1897 on Great Western Road for the Caledonian Railway.
Designed in a French style known as Beaux Arts that was popular from the years 1830 to 1900, it remains one of the more unique stations of that time.
The two storey building held the ticket and other offices as well as accommodations for the Railway staff and was an isolated yet busy station until its closure in 1942 during the railway cuts.
A staircase within the building led down to the two platforms, were the train would arrive from Crow Road Station before going into Balgray Tunnel on route to Kirklee Station.
Remains can be seen today, such as the staircase imprint, portions of the platforms, and of course the building.
Hidden away behind a fortification underneath the building is the old railway tunnel leading to Kirklee, I explored this tunnel known as Balgray Tunnel which is the only Railway Tunnel so far to have had Cosmic Ray technology used inside it to determine the location of unknown shafts (seen on National Highways RU-vid Channel)
A rare treat for a Ghost Station to be in operation as another business while paying homage to the buildings history, so I had to check out the inside and grab some pics and a coffee - this venue has great atmosphere, very pleasant.
Thanks to the manager for allowing me to record.
This Stations closure during WW2 was die to storage and unpopularity of the Station, then finally the track was dismantled after the Beeching Report of the 1960s.
The Beeching Report and The Railway Clearances have been in operation since WW2, not the 1960s like many believe, that is mistaken from the Redevelopment/Regeneration in Glasgow from the 1960s.

Thanks for your comment, the Beeching Cuts were "disclosed" in 1963 by the Beeching Report though the process was in effect since early WW2 - correct that this Station was closed for more reasons than the Beeching Cuts but it was essentially that approval which stopped this operating as a Station further, through the 1950 onwards. It was closed in WW2 for storage/transport reasons and the most boring detail of this Stations closure that I did not include is simply that it was an unpopular Station, no one used it to step off the train basically as Crow Road the previous stop and Kirklee the further stop were much more adjacent to local hot spots. Bit murky but unpopularity and War closed the Station then the Beeching Cuts kept it from proceeding ever again as a Railway Station 🧠✨️

Railway Clearances began in the 1940s as Stations were used to help Britain win the war. Plus to capitalise and progress in getting rid of the old and in with the new. Officially titled the Beeching Report in the 1960s but look further and you'll see that it was operating for years before the "report" was published in the public realm.

Me and my mates use to go there with the air guns shooting pidgeons and each other in the now restaurant and in the tunnel, it was all open in the 70s, it led on to the highland station that is now filled in and has a kids play park just after the tennis club on highland road

Used to go down the tunnels in the mid 70’s. Scary as F sometimes. The station was easy to get into but the insides were pretty dangerous.

I don’t think it went to Kirklee Station. That was on the Botanics line. That tunnel would lead to Maryhill Central.

@Urban-Expeditions Год назад
It went to Kirklee buddy, the Balgray Tunnel ran from Kelvinside to Kirklee, before Kirklee it went to Bellshaugh Junction where it could take a left to Maryhill Central Station, correct. Though incorrect about it being separate from Kirklee, at the end of the video I'm between the Balgray Tunnel gate and the remnants of Kirklee Station. There was multiple Railways back then, I'm predominantly on the Caledonian Railway, Stay tuned for a Kirklee episode and a Maryhill Central one, plus many more 🔍✔️

Goes to both, Kirklee is nearer too. Check the map and follow the train line.

1942 BEECHING CUTS???? Learn a bit of history. Beeching was over 20y later.
@Urban-Expeditions
@Urban-Expeditions Год назад
You mean that the report was published in the 1960s. It was operating from WW2 under different aliases. Don't tell me to learn history tell yourself buddy. Closed for good as a Railway Station due to the cuts in the 1960s but this Station was prematurely closed due to it being very rarely used. There's the boring real answer, though its final stamp of Disapproval was from the Beeching Report. Go spend hours researching and verifying like I did before you insult me buddy.

@@Urban-Expeditions Your statement referred to the "1942 BEECHING CUTS". Perhaps if you did not make such inaccurate statements, people would not pick you up on it.
@Urban-Expeditions
@Urban-Expeditions Год назад
@@sapper82 it's simplifying the obvious, what occurred in 1942 eventually became the Beeching Cuts, how is that not understandable? ... its an intertwined effect, due to War/staff/storage and progress.
@Urban-Expeditions
@Urban-Expeditions Год назад
@@sapper82 no it didn't, it states closed in 1942 during the "Railway Clearances" which was the infant of the Beeching Report. You'll see if you look further into British/Glasgow History. It's all connected from city planning to the railroad to slum housing, it was in lumped into the one group, as far back as 1902 when the government photographers began documenting run down infrastructures.
