I was taught that the Kata was used to train in secrecy. It appeared as if they were only dancing instead of training Karate.

Yes you would train for the Kata in secrecy. But once your Sensei asks you to perform yours. You much do so in front of your entire school and masters. At least for Kempo Karate. It's almost your finishing move

There doesn't seen to be any Combative elements to it, it's just a series of techniques thrown together in a dance form. He's good at it, but not for me im afraid.

The first 2/3 is from a Kara-Ho Kempo Kata called "Kwai Sun". The rest seems to be pulled from others. Interesting

If Kung Fu and Karate merged it would be Kenpo. This form looks like a combination of the two stlyes

If you train different martial arts techniques, then you understand the best best of all different styles, I did train taekwondo, shoto Kan, gouju rou n the last I did was kenpo which I loved the best because of what every aspect of any move means, cause was only n only after kenpo I became invisible hard to beat in a championship no matter what which style my opponent was, invisible..

I think you meant invincible. If you're invisible, that means no one sees you at all or even care about you.

None of you understand Martial Arts in the least bit. It's not called Martial, it's Martial Arts. Kata's teach technique, it's the art side of Martial Arts. Ask any Master or Grand Master that is worth a damn. They will tell you that to be a well rounded Martial Artist, Kata is just as important as Kumite. It's not a Combat sport like MMA, or even Krav Maga which is purely a self defense system. I study both Tae Kwon Do and Krav Maga. By the way, not all Kata's display powerful movements. My Girlfriends Son studies Kung Fu. His fan weapon Kata is more graceful and controlled. Where as his Tiger open hand Kata is much more aggressive and powerful.
@nicholashewett979
@nicholashewett979 5 лет назад
You're right about this. Kata is development of the art. It influences better technique and focus on what's being done. It's similar to practicing scales for musicians. Are the scales themselves music? No. But they are they foundation. That said, I've never been a fan of kenpo. They have some good things, but their kata just seem so rushed and not well thought out.
@hellawaits6544
@hellawaits6544 4 года назад
No, Kata was originally purely for self defense. But with the modernization of Martial Arts, all the applications of the moves were no longer taught and everything got labeled a "block", and the range changed to striking range when the kata were originally for trapping, takedowns, and grappling range.

Kenpo was invented by a Filipino guy that just loved to friendly fade. He went around the beaches looking for people to scrap with.

WRONG, any competent master would tell you that if you practice sloppy technique and "place" our kicks ad punches instead of executing them like you mean them your kata training will mean nothing. Look at the sloppy positioning of his foot as he can't even execute a competent side kick. I have black belts in both Tae Kwon Do and Shotokan and both of my instructors are former Blackbelt instructors of the year, one in 1978 and one in 1981. My Tae Kwon Do training was brutal at times and when we did a punch or a kick weather isolated or in a form it had to be with full power, precision and focus and if not we were disciplined for this. Most off our training was spent drilling kicks back and forth at each other to become experts and range, kicking and hitting targets of all kinds from hand pads to heavy bags and lots of sparring and I mean heaving sparring. I entered my first tournament at 13, then a red belt 2 stripe training for my Black belt exam along with two other classmates of the same rank. We hadn't really stressed point fighting and although I won my first fight 6-1 I accidentally broke the arm of my opponent when he went to black a roundhouse kick so I was disqualified. I was up 7-1 but our mentality was "go for the kill" so there was no laying back. My other classmates were disqualified as well, one for breaking a jaw and one for snapping a cup when throwing a waist high roundhouse and the opponent throwing a high kick. My black belt exam was in 3 parts and my parents had to sign a consent form saying they would not sue if I were killed or maimed in the process, I'm not making this up. You did all our basics and techniques including forms in the morning session, no biggie. In the evening session it was already determined you were boing to be beat to a pulp and would have to fight black belt after black belt and for me it was mostly adult black belts. I got knocked down several times but I was not going to quit, I got some good shots in but I was mostly the recipient. After that we had to break several boards and even a brick. At 14 I put my hand through a brick. I could also bounce a full grown adult off the wall behind him if he was no more than two feet from it with my sliding side kick. My Shotokan master had even more brutal training while learning from his JKA Instructors while in Hawaii, one of them being Kanazawa(his favorite) Receiving broken bones while training with these masters was common but it was his opponents in tournaments in both Japan and in the US who would often get literally demolished by him and his power. The same fate would befall a cocky Muay Thai fighter who came into one of his dojos when he was still in Hawaii talking crap about Karate(guess he never got the memo on Oyama). Come to think of it my master had an even huskier build than Oyama. Any way he threw a reverse punch and broke the rib of the Thai fighter. The same guy came back 6 months later bitching about how the last time he was there someone broke his rib and that Shotokan was only good for the reverse punch. I guess he forgot who he had sparred last time, this time my master broke a different rib with a front kick. My point to all this is you get back what you put in. Any competent martial artist who has done Karate, Kajuknenbo, Kara ho Kempo, Tracy Kenpo, Tang Soo Do or Tae Kwon Do can see that this person has very poor technique and has not even bothered to master the basics like how to throw a proper kick. If this guy were to get into a fight I'm not sure he could handle an average street fighter. When I would watch Ed Parker, Sam Kuoha or Larry Tatum those are guys who look sharp and know what they are doing. This guy would have failed our black belt exam.

As much as I love good kata performance, Kenpo Karate's katas look the worst! I haven't watched a Kenpo Karate kata performance yet were the moves looked like they carried ANY sense of power or authority. Not one where a punch or strike looked like it emanated from the hara or tan tien. Not one where the performer looked like he was drawing power up from the ground through the legs. Not one where the performer gave even the slightest sense of mental and emotional "aliveness", or the sense of FIGHTING a real enemy. I'm sorry, but Kenpo Karate's katas look the worst of all!

This is why wrestlers, boxers, and jujitsu fighters laugh at other martial arts systems. Far too much theatrical bullshit. Nothing about what he did indicated power and commitment. I don’t even know him but I hope he never gets into a street fight.

If you believe kata is useless, then you've not been taught kata by a teacher that needs to teach it. Kata is very useful, but you have to be equally trained in the application, kihon, and sparring. I've never really learned to appreciate the kata from Kenpo. Too quick. It's like they're trying to imitate fighting multiple opponents for a show. Kata, in its simplicity, is a way to develop technique, movement, and good form.
