Ken Follett gives us an exclusive in depth insight into ‘A Column of Fire’, the epic third installment in his Kingsbridge series. Ken talks about the research and inspiration for the book including the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots , Guy Fawkes and the gun powder plot, and how the multiple assassination attempts on Queen Elizabeth I resulted in the birth of the secret service! We are introduced to the characters in the book including Ned Willard, a 16th century James Bond, and Ken’s favourite character Margery Fitzgerald. Ken discusses tyranny, free speech and religion and just how difficult it is to create a free society.

Fine book! In the beginnings you will think characters are predictable. But then... you are trapped in!

I loved this book overall. More or at the very least as much as Pillars of the Earth and Edge of Eternity. Looking forward to the prequel of Pillars!

Sylvie's death was quite heartbreaking but it saved Ned's life in the end.

You are right that Margery was courageous but I didn't like her as she wasn't using her brain while making decisions of her life as first she marries Brat and then hide the secret of her brother from Ned for years even after marrying him but then the could not be knitted if she made right decisions. Overall it is one of the best novel that I have read so far at the age of 18.

I found this book far less enjoyable than the previous two. The writing style is too casual and too modern. I get the feeling while reading that a lazy person wrote it.
