this guy speaks with such precision and clarity .........he's a materials engineer and a scientist and ......oh yeah.....he also builds guitars.......I have an emerald green 96 fly....that I bought in 96 for $2600......I was playing it tonight.....never goes out of tune......I stopped playing guitar for 2 years once and when I got back at it the fly was still in tune......and I wasn't surprised

Ken has a way of drawing you in to the subject. I love his methods, which on the one hand are very radical and on the other steeped in the tradition.

I mean, as an Italian, I never heard of chestnut being used for anything other than firewood. But also not an open fireplace as it spits ambers like crazy. So, I’m happy I got to learn something about a tree I have climbed so many times in my childhood. This channel has really inspired me to look at things a little differently in my guitar making. However, I’m not sure I’m ready to depart from a dovetail beck joint. Although I’d love to experiment with some less orthodox neck joints. Anyway. It’s always a pleasure to watch all of this. I feel lucky I get to lay in bed and watch a master luthier

What fun! Tree climbing! I remember it fondly. Thanks for your praise! The neck joint is a good example of a hill that can be climbed from many directions. I think that as long as it isn't loose, it's probably OK. I think this is nicely demonstrated by the joint that I devised and like so much. With strings off, the neck is free to wiggle a little, so it's the forces of string tension that makes it behave like a firm connection. Orthodoxy, like "tradition", is in the eye of the beholder. One of my favorite traditional instruments is a hollow log and a stick.

Very interesting. A little more of a process than I was envisioning.

Watching you bend the veneer by hand has me wondering how it would do with being placed in a steamer box for some persuasion... or would the epoxy/linen not withstand that kind of heat?

I wouldn't count on the epoxy hanging in for long in live steam. I'm showing you what works for me, do your thing, and good luck/fun!

With all of the necks that you have built using this process, what is the failure rate? Seems you have a system that is almost perfect. A tiny bit skill required, but relatively easy to learn. I know that epoxy is exactly as you describe from a dozen years of exposure. Sanding after two days is totally different than a week. From gummy to powder.

I have yet to experience a failure of any of these many necks of any kind. I did lots of testing at the start in 2004 - 5, hoping to use room temperature cure resins, and I learned they aren't up to the task.

Are you sure that piece that you bent was only 0.2 mm thick? Seems more like cca 1 mm

Sorry for the confusion, mate, it's the linen that I was talking about, it's .2mm or .008" thick, the thinnest linen cloth available, as I understand it. The wood varies from 1.4 - 2mm

I wonder if he ever tried a slip-roller, apply even pressure across the entire piece in incremental steps
@kenparkerarchtoppery9440
@kenparkerarchtoppery9440 10 дней назад
Could be a cool idea, except I think you would have to use a piece that was substantially oversize in width in order to get the material started, as a result of the distance between the rollers.
