Have a look at Ken Water's 27' [8.2 M] Mobile Garvey Dory with his shanty style cabin. It came out great!

Still hoping that the family will find a way to let Jeff’s legacy to continue to live on in his designs. I had heard that Duckworks was interested, but nothing there yet.

It has been a guilty pleasure to study his plans and watch his videos throughout my life. Last year and change have been rough. Logged on to see some new videos and I guess Jeff is no longer with us. His passion for this craft was something else. A true engineer. Godspeed.

Thanks. Some guys got the eye to make the accommodations on their hulls look natural. I’m afraid mine’s gonna look just like I drew it.

How to say I’m experiencing the effects of age and the Garvey with the drop down front door is the answer to my problems anticipated. What is frustrating is that nobody who has built these boats and has incorporated the drop down door goes into any sort of detail to explain how they work or how they seal. So when I build one I anticipate building the 19 foot Garvey I plan on documenting it really well and showing what everybody seems to skip over. And it’s funny a lot of people build your boats and show videos of them on the boat and it shows I’m looking out over the bow cruising in the water well we’ve all seen that what we want to see is the boat the focus should be on the boat what does the boat look like from the side or from the rear or from the front and how about the amenities people incorporate into their boats some show things but they briefly flashed past them with the camera and don’t talk about them at all. But all the same I really enjoy all the videos don’t get me wrong.

I include the seal part numbers for that option in the plans. It's just something you buy from an industrial distributor like McMaster Carr.There's no need to seal it up tight. It is above the waterline an only needs to keep the splash out. See the video with it down while Ken is riding with it down while underway.

I love the wheelchair accessible Garvey. I had to sale my new boat and lost $20000 because my MS was kicking my butt. Now I use wheelchair and can’t find a simple boat to go fish on a lake. Thanks for this video. Now I have to find someone to build it. I have the knowledge and know how but physically can’t.

Thank you for the video Jeff. I would encourage anyone that wants to build a boat and it is the first one or the tenth to look at your plans. All of the plans are well documented and easy to follow. I am hoping to get started on my Alaskan next month (a year late). Hope to get some photos to you and the other builders as I progress. Again, thank you, take care and have a good week.

I agree, but someone who is going to cruise thousands of miles on inland waterways can benefit from the fuel economy of a lighter boat. They can do it with less motor. This is really important if you are trying to come up with a useful, practical, electric power option. The boat will need a ridiculous amount of battery storage which will provide plenty of ballast. Foam core isnt a panacea for all that ails but it does solve a few problems, and is common for superstructures and interior paneling. Im not too sure about its suitability for a hull. I guess it depends but Id probably steer away from that.

I like that design, it looks nice and functional. I'm glad you're so happy modifying plans. I'm going to get the money together to pay you, and we're going to do a Kodiak. The unpleasantness is nearly over, and good times are just around the corner. I'll let you know
@tjkid07
@tjkid07 2 года назад
Well, I only come up with new designs if I think they fit into my catalog and will sell them to others. If you want me to design something special for you - and I don't think it will be of interest to others, or is too similar to one of my other designs, that will a custom design and it'll cost a lot more than a stock plan.

Mr Ken do the fuel compartments in a boat have to be sealed to prevent gas from making it to the bilge?
@tjkid07
@tjkid07 2 года назад
Yes, of course. Most builders put in commercial fuel tanks rather than trying to seal in parts of the bilge.
@beanieweenie9543
@beanieweenie9543 2 года назад
@@tjkid07 yes sir I understand the tank has to be sealed but if you put a commercial tank in do you have to seal the stringers and bulkheads around it in case the tank starts to leak for some reason so the fuel doesn’t make it to bilge and get pumped in the water or worse ignited when the bilge pump cuts on.

I don't know if you read your comments. But here's a little trick. I'm a truck driver and I spent many years haul'n oversized loads. Technically the next width for a load is 8 ft 6 in. But if you read the laws and regulations. You don't have to mark or getting oversized load permit until you hit 9 ft wide or over 3 ft extended past the trailer. So technically you can go to 8 ft 11 inches and still be legal without having to get a permit or an oversized load placarding on your vehicle. Now it's been a while since I've done oversized loads but I'm pretty sure it's 12 ft wide on city streets without a pilot and 14 ft wide on interstates without a pilot. That's why you see a lot of guys getting away with making their boats 11 ft 11 in wide and not having pilots escort them down the road. All they got is an oversized load sign on the front of the vehicle and on the back of the trailer couple flags and you're good to go after you get the permit. And the permits really not that expensive I think it's like $54 in most States. So if you want to build a nice wide boat it's not going to cost you that much extra to transport it as long as you keep under 12 ft. I'd love to make 11 ft 11 in wide boat.
