I agree with you that that was probably his mentality/reason. I also think that “loving someone but not being IN LOVE” with them as an excuse to not marry or leave is tricky tho and can be used as an excuse to leave the commitment for other reasons tho and I’ll tell you why. Being a married woman for a while and together for even longer, I understand that the love that I had for my husband at the beginning and the love that I have for him now are two totally different types of love - I know he feels the same and the sentiment depending on what’s going on in our family or marriage causes the ebb and flow as well. Yes, we’ve discussed this before in moments of checking in but what we continue to walk away with is no matter how we may be feeling in a moment (bc you don’t always like your husband or wife we have to be real so what keeps you there right? lol) but both of us are very serious about the commitment we made to one another before God. THAT is what is our glue and life force the COMMITMENT. Most married couples can attest to this ebb, flow, and evolution in their marriage as well it happens in ALL relationships. Love and types of love for your partner change and morph as you age, as priorities change, etc. and it goes through so many moments of growth, change, etc. This is to be expected in a marriage or long term union. The problem I think younger generations face is, they don’t understand this and bc of that assume that fairy tale heart skippy beats goo goo eye love is what it’s supposed to be like all the time - forever - that is totally unrealistic. This is why in marriage the duty, love, and COMMITMENT are what you are agreeing to sustain and carry you through. If you talk to those who make it to 40 50 years or forever… they are committed to their significant other over EVERYTHING. I think if this generation and the younger generations really want long lasting marriages and unions, they need to read and research about how love changes and shifts throughout the life of a marriage and think about what that looks like. If damn sure don’t look like a Disney movie lol. It requires work, sacrifice and commitment. Maybe then people will be more inclined to do the work as they go through and grow through the changes and development of their marriage instead of jumping ship bc they for one second feel that they aren’t feeling the “same as they were in the beginning” bc if that’s the case, they will NEVER stay in a long term relationship. And if young men and women nowadays are chasing that first time feeling or that love at first sight flutter they may as well stay single and chase it bc that usually only lasts 3 months to about a year and a half. Long term tho - it’s unsustainable and unrealistic in the span of a long lasting marriage/union.
