The interviewer is Vivian Perlis, who collaborated on Copland's memoirs.

Thank you so much! It's unforgivable that her name is not mentioned anywhere. Not in the credits nor in the video description. She is such a knowledgeable, charming and intelligent lady.

She's a sound scholar who knows her subject well and is a more satisfying writer than an interviewer.

Copland’s score for the film “ The North Star “ is a true masterwork. The quintessential “ American “ composer managed to capture the spirit of Ukrainian folk music. Astonishing achievement!

I think Brahms said that a piece of music has to be logical and well developed before it can be beautiful.

I was shocked by the direction of the questions, and the understanding or lack of same with regard to the art of composing, considering the creds of the interviewer.

A terrible interview, but Aaron Copland knows how to be charming , gracious, and informative at all times!

This long, tedious interview must have been exhausting for Copand. He tried to answer every silly question. He's a true American hero. I heard Copland conducting Copland in Portland, OR, back in 1974 or 75. It's so funny that the music of Appalachian Spring in intention had nothing to do with Appalachia. The ballet itself is powerful in movement but grotesque.

Copland worked with Perlis for years and selected her for the interview.

I guess Copland was incapable of selecting a suitable interviewer, according to you.

@@Twentythousandlps I've been interviewed many, many times and the best ones were from honest but hostile reporters. They always asked the best questions. Soft-ball questions from friendlies were difficult because they never gave me anything to hit against.

Stupid opening remark! The “sunny side” of 80! She might as well have said, “It’s all downhill from here, Aaron!”
