Jenna - I don't know which state you live in, but in our state, ALL high school students are required to take a course in "Finacial Literacy." It was made a state graduation requirement following the 2008 crisis. Signed, a recently retired public educator.

They do it on purpose to dumb down the population in finances so they can stay in control and keep lining their pockets with our money.

Let's not forget when a school was built my property tax went up to help pay for it . There's that county sale tax to help pay for it i have to pay. Actually, unless you "mandate" reasonable rates on the part of either, you are unlikely to "incentivize" either to charge reasonable rates. As long as they are free to charge whatever they wish and their "customers" have no recourse except to do without either education or medical care, the only real role for government is intervention of the kind described here.

Doctors and people who worked hard to care for patients are not getting the money. Administrators make huge amounts of money. The administrators didn't spend half their life in school, do not help patients, and should not be taking the lions share of insurance payouts. Insurance companies are increasing paperwork admin burdens to discourage the use of medications. Malpractice fees should also be covered and possibly limit malpractice claims so that unnecessary tests are not completed to avoid frivolous lawsuits from ambulance chaser lawyers. Malpractice insurance takes 1 day of the week pay from doctors every week in some states. The administrative financial burdens placed by Obamacare force doctors to use electronic medical records and are very expensive to maintain. Medicare will charge a 10% fee on all payments for 2 years if you don't click all of the boxes deemed necessary. There are week long conferences just trying to figure out how to pass Obamacare admin burdens. All of this increases health care costs and burn out. These issues need to be addressed to fix insurance issues.

I paid back my computer networking administration and engineering school debt. It was a real accomplishment paying it off lump sum from savings while working an unrelated and less financially rewarding avocation.

Agree about trades. I know that there are plants and companies begging for skilled trade employees. Not sure if people know that a licensed electrician, plumber etc., can and do make a six figure income. Even the entry level helper jobs make a decent salary. There is a great demand for skilled trade workers to fill these jobs. Not sure how much demand there is for someone with a liberal arts degree.

I took loans for college, worked through college and got a better job after college to pay back my student loans. If I can do it, anyone can do it. I took the loans and I was responsible for paying them back. It took me 10 years to complete after getting out and I had to delay the means to purchase things I wanted but I still was able to be disciplined enough to live on a budget and get it done. I don't want to pay for someone else to go to college. If they took the loans. They pay them back. Simple as that. Government wants to pay for everything and it's not realistic. We are responsible for our own lives.

We paid for our daughter's college education as we had promised her. She earned this with great grades and no trouble. Easier for us to worry about the cost of college than it would be for her. My parents did the same for me. My daughter just turned 27 and is getting her MBA @ UCLA and her employer is paying for it. She now is financially ahead of her peers. Way, way, ahead. Whatever works for you. More kids, or Stanford, may have changed my approach.

You may want to tell the DEMs and GOP your not responsible for the 2 Trillion spent in Afghanistan. Our society can not afford student education but we afford high school education. We can afford to give favorable tax laws to corporations who pay no taxes but get money back. We gave bailouts to cruise lines who aren't even registered in the US and pay no taxes. We raise the defense budget by billions. Those pesky peasant and their children's education we have no money we gave it all away to corporations who run the news and the two political parties.

Hmm, Helen couldn't afford to go to college or send her kids to college? Helen probably couldn't afford to raise her kids either and most likely received government assistance to raise those kids too, yet probably didn't complain about that. However, even though I myself do not have children, it does not bother me one bit that I pay thousands of dollars each year to help support families such as yours and many others.

Apparently, you are not comparing apples to apples here. I was almost in the same boat as Ralph Pinkins. After high school, I got a factory job during the week and worked at a grocery store on the weekends. Then after two years, I was able to go back to college and paid cash money that "I EARNED" for the first three years and then took out a student loan that "I PAID BACK" for my final year. The problem I see today is there are those who feel they are entitled to something and not have to work for it. They go to college - mainly to party and have fun - thus racking up over $100,000 to do so and now they are screaming that the world is unfair to them now that they are required to pay it all back. I - like Ralph am not in favor of paying for someone else's college loans when I had to struggle to pay for mine - on my own.

You have put your heart and sole into your company. Your tired of working 80 hour weeks so decided to hire someone. Which candidate would you choose? 1. A person that has been working since the age of 12 working their way up the ladder (learning motivation, ambition, initiative and developing a solid work ethic) while attending middle and high school. When this person graduated high school, they couldn’t afford college so earned their education by joining the military. Once out of the military, they continue with their previous job (the job before military) and started doing volunteer work to help explore their options. Attended and completed college debt free and now their application is in front of you? Or 2. Someone that graduated high school. Took out a loan and attended college. This person now feels that others are responsible for their actions. His application is in front of you. No work experience. No actual skill. Just the basics learned in college. During the interview they bring up a couple of points. 1. Will you be willing to pay off their college debt and 2. Why aren’t you paying more? Which person would you hire. Children are given 12 years of taxpayer funded education. When finished with those 12 years they are expected to act like adults and be held responsible for their own decisions. By the way... I took the route of the first candidate. Which are you?

Maybe you should ask why loans are given to people with no chance of repaying them? I can't get a loan for a house, unless I can afford it. Why is it different for 18 year olds? Why can't they get a loan for a small buisness but they can get 200k in debt no problem?

If this logic is correct, then why do we have a child tax credit? Why do I have to pay for peoples’ kids? I pay higher taxes so people with kids can get 300 a month or $50,000 over 18 years. Paying for some peoples dumb mistakes. Why aren’t people upset about paying for kids that aren’t theirs? I didn’t tell people to have a kid or kids they can’t afford. Their kids, their responsibility.

26! Hell I was paying my own way at 17! I still lived at home and ate meals there.. but I was paying for my own car.. stuff etc. Spoiled brain washed brats.

I don't think that's ridiculous at all..a lot of folks don't get their lives together until at least 24 or 25 so yeah it helps to have that safety net for health care.

@@crucisnh Lol, I mean, That is my opinion as well. I worked hard to pay off all my loans, while I see my peers buy Lexis and new trucks and wait for the government to pay off their student loans. It's really unfair that the government is going to make me pay more taxes with my education to pay for other people's bad financial choices. That's why I'm saying, if you're going to make someone pay other than the people who borrowed the loan, make the colleges pay it, not us.
