Coming from flat Florida, I don't get many opportunities to do long sustained climbs. While visiting Georgia, I jumped at the opportunity to challenge myself up a steep climb... Kennesaw Mountain. I share some of my favorite on the bike techniques that help me get up the steep gradients.

My climbing position is also changing during a climb. So usually I try to focus on a smooth pedal stroke with a relatively relaxed upper body and higher cadence. Sometimes I shift up two gears and push out of the saddle with a lower cadence to mix up the muscle load. Works great for me.

Nice to see this type of video from you. I currently live in Bergen, Norway where we have a lot of climbs similar to this, just more traffic in them. I just moved from Rome, Italy to here so I am used to hills and I like that a lot even though I am a bit big and heavy. Keep up the good work.

Campy fam! Good job without a warmup. You Florida boys should do a climbing training camp once a year!

This is in my neighborhood and rode it this morning! There is an opportunity for a warmup on the bike/walking path that starts at the parking entrance. As mentioned earlier, check the One Love event, it’s an amazing gathering.

I ride up the hill periodically also- I usually start from Lewis park down the road. Its only a couple miles away but the varied terrain is somewhat of a warmup without dealing with traffic-

That's about 10 miles from my house! You should join the Beautiful Backroad Century in the Fall! You would enjoy that rolling terrain.

First impression: shift way down and get your cadence up. I live in Oregon and LOVE my compact gearing setup. Nice video! Thanks for sharing!

Nice ride with the intermittent shade and sun.😊 When I’m riding in the hills SW Colorado between Purgatory ski and Silverton, I find I almost never grip the tops of the bars. I usually have a near death grip on the shifter hoods or on the drops. Because most of my bikes are 52/42 & 12/26 cassettes I spend a lot of time out of the saddle 😂. I do have one bike from this century and that one 50/34 & 12/29 I can sit and spin most of the time.

If you want to really experience climbing in Georgia, enter either the 3 gap or 6 gap century. Over 11k feet of climbing.

Great vid, thanks. I used to struggle pacing my climbs. Have had great help from watt metering, evening out my effort. Personally I’m more of a spinner. Gonna test your “toe push” technique. Thanks.

If you're a cyclist in the Atlanta area and want to test your climbing abilities then the Kennesaw Mountain ride is a good choice even though there is virtually no area for a warm up as Luis states. For those of us who think we're ok riders who regularly knock off 30+ miles on the Silver Comet, the Kennesaw climb can be a very humbling experience.

I have a climb of the same distance and grade right in my neighborhood that I do as part of the loop I do weekly. I guess I'm saying I know what that climb feels like. I have switched to a 50-34 chainset with 11- 30 cassette because I have found that a higher cadence gets me up the climb feeling much more fresh. I do the loop 3 times which works out to 20 miles and there is other short climbs along the way with an awesome descend to give me a breather. I can understand a flatlander's fascination with that climb you are on but really it's very common for me to get 2k to 3k feet of elevation on most of my rides and just feels routine. I couldn't imagine only having flat terrain to ride and I guess that would fascinate me.

I was never a good climber and then one day, saw a video of Contador. He said he could dance out of the saddle for 20 mins at something like 420W. I worked on my technique on a spin bike during the off season and could actually stay up for 20 minutes, but it is a very different story on the road, as you can imagine. In any case, the key takeaway is that if you want to be good at climbing out of the saddle, there's a lot of abdominal engagement that must occur, in order to shift your weight efficiently, and not tire out pushing down on the pedals. And to have a smooth, circular pedal stroke it takes a lot of practice. If you can imagine pushing a car on an ice rink, with no grip under your shoes, that is the feeling of instability you have to manage with your core, while keeping your heart rate under control. Also, it helps to not have a reach that is too short, in order to be able to get more leverage off the handlebars. It feels like hanging from your arms while your weight is dropping down on the pedals.

Funny you mention Contador, I climb a lot and love it because that who I imitate. I watched him race a lot and I just enjoy rocking my bike up a climb.

My climbing technique is similar more or less, good job, great information. Also trying my best to let my hand loose helps to lower my HR, its not easy especially when the climb is steep. Try stay straight without using extra force in my hand. And also off saddle 👍
