Bruce Wayne Well, thank you for this feedback! I really wanted to go see this movie since I first saw the trailer, and your comment is one of the many positive comments I noticed. Kenneth Brannagh saying that the movie has something really personal about it makes me wonder how I'll react, since one of my great-grandfathers was there at Dunkirk, among the men who got saved. (On a sidenote, it's amusing that they mentioned Agincourt, one of my favourite battles. I'm French, but I really don't care if we lost that one tbh, the King and his lords had it coming with their stupidity, and this battle is an excellent example of what I'd call the British guile.)

I went to see it last night. With all the 3D mega movies out nowadays, this 2D film was the most intense I've seen all year. Well and truly awesome. Not sure if the 8 year olds who were at the cinema enjoyed it as much. Maybe they were disappointed by how little Harry Styles was actually in it.

my father (who died in '99) was at Dunkirk - but would NEVER talk about ANYTHING he did in the war - he was in for the duration from the time he was 18 in '38 until he was 25 in '45 - now I will be able to go and see what he went thru....and count my blessings that he made it out to go on fighting....will always love you dad! ♥

+Blissful Sorrow The only war movie I have seen that compares is "Saving Private Ryan". Ryan was more of a metaphor of course, but both immersed the viewer in the very real and often flawed, often heroic characters going through experiences that cannot ever be fully understood other than by those who experience war first hand, but probably conveyed as well as possible on film.

I am Canadian, we were all inculcated with the history of WWII and I. Because Canadians were in both from the start until the end. Dunkirk spirit was the great weapon that finished the Nazis. The British farmers fed not only the British, but fed the rest of Europe after the war. Never underestimate the power of an island of pissed off civilians. My first exposure to Shakespeare was Olivier's film of Hamlet on black and white tv. I couldn't have been more than ten at the time. I was mogadored. Thunderstruck. Shakespeare could never be dead words on a page after that. Shakespeare has ever been a primal scream for me.

Americans should be thankful they had a massive landmass and an ocean between them and Germany (not to mention they didn't join the war until they were pulled kicking and screaming into it). While Britain was fighting for its very survival they rationed food, not because they're "socialist".

Screw you, read the history and learn by the university of Hollywood which usually gets the fundamental facts wrong. There were also French Colonial troops too that were evacuated out of Dunkirk. The civilian fleet although very brave and proactive were not vital to the evac but the Royal Navy took the brunt in rescuing the troops.
@PrograError

the BEF is the more important "assets" so it's not surprised that most of the BEF were evacuated. whereas the French troops being rescued are an afterthought. no matter this fact doesn't take away the epic scale of the movie.

An amazing film, but also an amazing story of courage and sacrifice. Believe it or not, one of the little boats that participated in the evacuation was captained by none other than Charles Lightoller, the most senior officer to survive the sinking of the Titanic. His boat, the Sundowner, which was built to carry 21 people, saved 127 servicemen during the evacuation. Oscar winner Mark Rylance played a composite character that was inspired by Lightoller.

I was reared in Belfast not very far from Branagh. Me and my pals often went through his neighbourhood on our way to the public swimming baths and we played and trained with our football team at The Grove football pitches. I believe his older brother was in the same year as me in secondary school. In fact his uncle was a science teacher there. So well done Sir Kenneth you’ve done very well for yourself. “ You’re a Quare Lad”.

Notice how Branagh went to greet the audience upon entrance but Colbert got to him. Also note that he NEVER turns his back to the audience. Before sitting he bowed to the people in the studio. That comes from his stage acting. A true artist and may be the last of his kind.

The saddest thing about Dunkirk, other those who died or were injured, was the fact most of the French troops evacuated (over 100k) were brought back to France almost immediately and ended up dead or as prisoners. Had they remained in Britain they could have fought again in Normandy.

My Grandmother's brother Uncle Alan turned up her doorstep straight from Dunkirk. He was wrapped in a blanket and wearing long John's as he had to swim out to a ship to escape the Germans at Dunkirk. He went back as part of the D Day Invasion and survived the war.

At the end of the day, the only true critics worth listening to are those veterans. If they approve of the film in terms of historical accuracy, emotion etc. etc. then that's all that matters, not some teenagers opinion, who didn't even know what Dunkirk was until the words Harry Styles were mentioned.

Just seen film today and what a stunning achievement Chris Nolan has made for the veteran of the evacuation it is an amazing production with a perfect cast. Please everyone lets all shout out towards the Monarchy and vote Chris Nolan for an MBE the man deserved it. I understand other people out there deserve recognition awards and let them have it but give Chris Nolan some award for having the courage to do this film in our age of CGI and Comic book heroes. I salute you Chris and are brave heroes

"26 miles" except for various reasons- minefields and sandbanks and other hazards, the journey was much longer. One route was 39 nautical miles but meant hugging the French coast and being shelled. Another route through minefields was 55 miles but it also went close to the sandbanks and was hazardous at night. The final route was 87 miles but was also hazardous because of air attack and attack by German naval vessels. All in all, it was a particularly difficult trip. Kenneth Branagh plays someone that existed but the movie wanted to avoid using "real" people by name but the man he plays was Commander Clouston a Canadian officer in the Royal Navy and he died after his small ship was hit and he died in the water of exposure.

Just came back from theater watching this movie. It was absolutely great! Sure, it could have used bit more representation of the French army and people's contribution, but it was a great representation of what the British soldiers went through in a personal level.

@piarpeggio

The movie does in fact show briefly that the French are covering the British retreat but yes without more mention of the French it became an incomplete ("ignore" is a bit too harsh word for this) representation of the actual event.

Honestly, I think the French side of the conflict could be its own movie. But I agree, I was hoping that the French would feature fairly prominently in this movie, because they earned it.

I saw this movie and I'm taken back to the moment I was watching it; my eyes are tearing up again, my heart beats too fast, and I hate the sound of clocks ticking. There are happy moments, there are proud and relieving moments, but in the end, it doesn't feel like a 'happy' ending. It's heavy, it's profound, and I left the theatres shaking and feeling heavy and upset. It's a film that is really hard to describe emotionally. I want to watch it again but I don't think I could handle the emotional stress.

Just saw him in the 2001 HBO film “Conspiracy” about the Wannsee Conference and somehow he still comes off as charming even when playing a high ranking Nazi speaking very casually about plans to commit genocide. He won an Outstanding lead actor Emmy for his portrayal of Reinhard Heydrich. I highly recommend the film!
@johnking5174
@johnking5174 7 лет назад
Reinhard Heydrich was charming in real life. He had a charisma and was able to sweet talk and use the carrot approach to get the horrendous crimes he wanted done, done, by using charm, flattery as well as the stick. So Kenneth portrayed him very well, with charm and sinister atmosphere all in one performance.
