This camera doesn't lock focus on half-press as it was invented later on by Nikon. To prefocus you have to push the lever, push the shoot button with the subject in the middle to focus and then push again to shoot with composition desired.

I have one of these and the autofocus is extremely fast and no shutter lag. It's one of those rare cameras you press the shutter and the photo is taken instantly. Takes great photos really sharp. They are inexpensive so far ( before prices go up) and well worth getting. They are noisy but if you're in a busy city the noise isn't too bad.

Cool. They are worth it, for sure!

Hello! I recently bought the Canon AF35ML (basically the same just a few upgrades than the one you are showing). You caught my attention by explaining that moving the ISO to 200 while the film is 400 to have a little more control since it's all automatic. My first roll on the camera was a Portra 400 (which is not the cheapest roll) and my shots came out a bit underexposed. It was shot mostly on sunlight (I live in the caribbean) so I was wondering if there was something wrong with the camera, or maybe the film or developing process. I will try the ISO change tip to see if it helps.
@kennethwajda
@kennethwajda 8 лет назад
Fooling the meter gives you a lot of control over exposure. Anytime you want to overexpose--say if someone is sitting in a bright window, and you don't want a silhouette--push the ASA/ISO setting down to 200 (1 stop) or 100 (2 stops).

Nice looking camera. I personally don't like the auto winding for street photography. I like the manual wind ones much better. I've got one of these myself.

A Torrent of Videos I'm with you, and it's a loud motor! But you can get these for next to nothing and you have a full-frame film camera. Good for some things!

The ML has a en even faster lens. I believe still one of the biggest ever put on a point and shoot.

You can't really compare this to QL17, since the QL17 isn't autofocus and is only aperture priority. It's nice when someone who knows something about cameras does these reviews. Nicely done.
@okaro6595

Actually QL17 is shutter priority.

@kennethwajda

800 speed or 3200 speed. It'll default to wide open.

im in the uk, my dad gave me this in the 80s still has the lense cover and the strap.. also the case, but that's in bad shape now. everything still works tho! I just got this of the shelf, been on there a few years to dust it all off.

I think the manual winding camera you were referring to is the Canonet TL17 GIII. It has an awesome f1.7 40mm lens. I also prefer manual winding. Does this camera in the video give you the ability to chose the aperture? It reminds me of the Nikon L35AF camera of the same time frame.
@kennethwajda
@kennethwajda 6 лет назад
No, you can't choose the aperture. The QL17 GIII you can.
@okaro6595

This one actually uses active autofocus. It sends an IR-beam. Other makers typically used the passive Visitronic module. The active autofocus works complete darkness.

Hi Kenneth thanks for your video. I bought the AF35M in a vintage market. It appear good and it works, but after the first test i noted a autofocus problem. The camera set the focus just in panorama. always. There's no way to set the focus as portrait or group. Have you idea how to solve this problem?
@kennethwajda
@kennethwajda 4 года назад
It's AF, so if you point it at things at different distances, it should focus at different distances. Otherwise it's not focusing critically and it's useless.

Some may be lucky and find these at thrift stores for a few bucks, however truth is most will have to get them off Ebay for $40-$50. Still worth for a decent film camera. Just remember, when you search for photo samples on internet and stumble on various blogs, most of these blogs edit their images and the results are much different that what you will get on printed paper. Good to be realistic and not expect miracles. As for the lenses, these were fast, but not necessarily amazing. Just having a large aperture doesn't mean the rest of the lens is necessarily prime. These were among the first point & shoot cameras, later ones had less fast but improved lens.

Try a roll of color so you can get it developed at your local camera shop. Kodak 200 should work.

Canon AF35ML, Minolta Hi Matic AF2 or Leica Mini? I want something that has a good depth of field and the focus must be sharp! Which film camera should i get? Thank you!

just dug out this camera. thanks for ur tutorial. what would happen if i shot a 800 asa film with this camera in dark lighting if i can only set it to 400?
@kennethwajda
@kennethwajda 6 лет назад
You'll just have a denser negative that protects you from underexposure. See this: petapixel.com/2016/03/29/exposure-affects-film-photos/ - Overexposure doesn't matter that much, but underexposure is not your friend.
@kennethwajda
@kennethwajda 6 лет назад
So, 800 would be their +1 photo, because 800 is one stop more sensitive than 400.

There isn't a switch, that's a different camera. Try different batteries or check their position. If it doesn't do it, it's dead.

can you verify, when i turn the camera off, the shutter un-cocks itself and when i turn it back on, it reloads and advances. as far as i can tell, it advances no matter if its loaded with film or not. does it actually skip a frame every time its turned on?
@kennethwajda
@kennethwajda 9 лет назад
spongebobdriftpants That's not normal. When I turn it on, it wakes up, but it doesn't advance. Something's up with yours. Anytime you open the back, it will advance. But not every time you turn it on.
