Kenny MacAskill served as cabinet secretary for justice for the Scottish government from 2007 until 2014. In 2009 he was confronted with an agonizing ethical decision--whether to release from prison Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, who was convicted of the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am flight from London to New York. In 2009, al-Megrahi was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Under Scottish law, there is a compassionate release provision for such individuals. MacAskill will discuss his decision and the international intrigue that ensued.
