The song was made into a MOVIE the title is the same as the song. Kenny Rogers played the UNCLE in it. Not only was Kenny Rogers great in the movie but the movie stayed true to the song lyrics. GREAT MOVIE and wonderful acting by Kenny Rogers besides having lessons to learn. If you like Kenny Rogers definitely watch the movie.
I think what makes this song great is the music keeps you grounded to the story. You can move with the music even when the lyrics takes you to a dark place. It’s a morality tale you can enjoy listening too and makes you think long after the song ends.
Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Lady", "Through the Years" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.
They made a TV movie based on the song that Kenny Rogers was in if you're interested in it. And yes, it was really faithful to the story told in the song.
There is an actual TV made movie with this song and the idea of The Gatlin Brothers because Kenny Rogers is in it and he is fighting at the one scene in the bar so it is something similar like this I can't remember what it's called but you just have to Google it and then you'd be able to find out what Kenny Rogers was in
I noticed in the beginning you mentioned even today he was singing less of the song. Now I do not know if you are aware that he passed on awhile back. This song makes me cry because my father has been gone 7 years now and he told me the same words as in this song.
This is a great story song. If you cut out the any verse or parts of the song, you lose the story. I never heard or saw Kenny Rogers take out any verse of this song. Even Country radio still plays the whole song!
The lyrics of they took turns on her, completely went over her head. The 3 Gatlin boys violated her in the worst way possible, hence the lyrics Becky's dress was turn and she was crying... To me that isn't a fight it's a loss of life issue for them boys... Yellow comes from yellow belly coward.
