Written by a Country Music Legend, Mel Tillis. It's mentioned in the song that he wont be around much longer. So l've always wondered why Ruby couldn't wait til he died to have her "fun"??? But then we wouldn't have this great story song.

This song was written about the Korean War, but I had friends who served in Vietnam, and many of the soldiers received "dear john" letters from their girlfriends and even their wives. I didn't serve because I had a serious accident that has left me disabled for the biggest part of my life. Marriage vows are serious and shouldn't be taken lightly. I understand the hardships that were placed on both parties in a marriage when true hardships come up, but the vows say, "For better or for worse till death, you do part," and I am thankful that my wife kept those vows because, although, I didn't serve in Vietnam we have still suffered some very hard times and it would have been made much worse if she had taken the easy way out. I love your reaction as always.

The "Asian war" in the song was Korea, but since the song was released by Kenny in '69, it was interpreted to be Vietnam.

I was the care giver for my wife for 18 years. She was confined to a wheelchair, and it was difficult at times. However, I honored my wedding vows and would not hesitate to do it again if I could. I know she would have done the same for me!! We were married for 43 years when she passed, but I still consider myself married to her. She once told me if she went first, she wanted me to move on, and I tried to do that, but just couldn't. She is still too much a part of me to let her go, and I know she is with me every day in spirit. She was and is the love of my life!!

The lady singing backup on the chorus really never got the credit for the hook she provided to the overall solidity of the song. Hauntingly beautiful. She also played a mean tambourine. lol

The song presents a difficult situation for both people. He says he understands that she has needs that he cannot provide because he is paralyzed. But then he also says they (the doctors) say that he won't be around much longer. (Apparently he is going to die at some point soon.) So, he wants her to at least be faithful to him a little longer. But she doesn't seem to want to.This song was written by the late Country music legend, Mel Tillis. His daughter, Pam Tillis also became a very successful country singer in the 1990s, You should react to one of her hits. A couple of her songs I suggest, Pam Tillis - "Maybe It Was Memphis" or Pam Tillis - "Shake The Sugar Tree"

Kenny used to take his love to town. He used to have a toll-free 1-800 phone number where women who wanted to hook up with him when he came to their town on tour could call. Usually they'd leave him a message but he was known to call them back to chat them up & make the arrangements. He was a world-class player!

The "right" way for Ruby to have handled this situation was to be honest and tell him she couldn't take it, break it off completely and leave. You may or may not feel less of her to do that but the fact that she stays yet continues to "diss" him by going to town "for love" is the problem. It's like she wants him to support her, but she refuses to support him.

Marriage means nothing to some people. Cheating is a lack of morals, bad character in a person. In SICKNESS & in health is the statement that some people don't observe. God is watching! I think, based on the reactions of you and your wife, you should really check out Marty Robbins trilogy "El Paso", "Feleena", and "El Paso City". THE BEST story telling songs ever. Even if you don't do reaction videos I suggest you two listen to these songs. You REALLY, REALLY, REALLY will love these songs. Marty Robbins is a big name in cowboy country and eventually became "outlaw" country. If you do listen to it please tell me what you think. Love you guys.

@@MerchantOfAlba Yes! Please react to Marty Robbins' "El Paso" (the studio version NOT the live performance). There are 3 songs in the series and El Paso is the first and, in my opinion, the best! Besides the wonderful story-telling lyrics, be sure to pay attention to the incredible guitar playing by Marty throughout the song. Superb! P.S. I just found you two not many days ago. I'm so glad I did! It's fun to listen to songs with you 🙃

Kenny Rogers & The First Edition were mostly made up of former members of the "New Christy Minstrels". They covered country rock, pop & psychedelic rock. They had a lot of hits in the 60's-70's such as "Something's Burning", "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", "But You Know I Love You", "Reuben James" etc. Kenny left in the mid 70's to pursue his solo career.

Sorry but I never cared for this song. If you go back to 1967 and listen to his song with the First Edition called JUST DROPPED IN you will hear the rock side of Kenny. I love that song.

Bah, it’s a great catchy tune but terrible message about wanting to kill someone that you’re supposed to love. If he really loved her, he would forgive her fulfilling her needs, especially because she keeps returning to care for him.
