Todays Story: The attack upon the Vault was swift and destructive. We smashed through the enemy that was there, with myself leading one of the charges against the walls, before helping smash down the door with Nibol joining me, laughing hysterically at the look on Heroaki’s face when he tried to join in, only to have his blade almost snap in two. Nibol: “Shek Steel!! Almost as thick as our skulls, it is! Joseph’s and I’s blades are crafted from the finest!! Your is Imperial Steel, meant to be replaced!” I just nodded, furiously hacking at the door, letting what madness I had slip out for a moment, and using it to batter the door down before my might. And Nibols to. When the door finally broke open, I looked upon the vault, and its inside defenders. I quickly attacked, spinning my great weapon with speed, killing one instantly as I lopped off his head, before I turned towards the second one, his blade trembling in his hands as his youthful face filled with fear. I novice Samurai. Unfortunate, but it is war, at least that is what I told myself after I stepped over his twitching body, my blade buried into his chest, and towards the compact device stored in a corner, which looked familiar… Upon the device was the crest of the Second empire, and below it was the libraries simple Scroll and sword emblem. I now knew who at least one of the looters of my home was. Looking around the device, I saw many texts, most about the United cities, scattered about. I knew what Tengu was doing. He was reading, seeing is there was anyway he could find an answer to his current predicament. Aka the hidden Sands. I knew what he would find. Slave rebellions barely put down, massacres of innocents, the destruction of ancient nobility, and most importantly, the answer he doesn’t want, or will ever, accept. Surrender to the mercy of the rebels. That is what helped the United cities survive. That, and assassins, bribery, betrayal, and good old fashioned duels. I whistled, and Mutey and Mohi came over, with Mutey recognizing the box as the same emblem on my hard drive. Mohi was just bored, as all Tengu loyalists were dead, and Sin had told him to keep the eating of the dead for more private times. I explained what the box was, at least where it came from, but I wasn’t ready yet to tell them what it held. If it even still held what I needed, for the box usally held inside of it a simple connection hardware, which when activated for a Skeleton, connected them to the hive mind of the Nexus, and allowed them to be given orders from the Head Librarian, Me, or the Nexus itself. With some modifications, it may serve as a way to help Prophets memory, however, I would need to be back in my old position as Head Librarian, equal to the Nexus, for it to work. And to do that, I needed to find the Nexus… Where are my men? ---------------- Great episode Pat! I’m back and the story is better than it has been in a while, as I’ve finally managed to get unstuck from both life and writers block!! I hope you like the story, and I’ve finally managed to continue on with the Prophet side-quest, as I call it in my brain 😂 My character is one step closer to finding the Nexus, and once he does, he shall be whole again!!! Long Live Suri!! Long Live her memory!!! Long Live the new settlement, Suri’s Refuge!!! Maybe the boss for the settlement could be Heroaki, if his creator is willing, as he seemingly built it from the ground up, with my characters help, however, my character wishes to remake the Library, away from most of civilization, possibly the leviathan coast, still deciding :D Edit: spelling :( Edit 2: I forgot to write the other half of my story, it’ll be added under this edit 😅 Other half of story: Bark and Heng fell today, with valiant effort from our men, with the lords of the cities being taken or killed, and many household slaves being freed. Many joined the Free Sands, going to Suri’s refuge, a new city that Hiroaki founded, with some help from me and others, but mostly he founded it, and continues to run it by himself. He needs a good staff to help him run it, and I know he does a great job, his job as a ex-clerk for the traders guild help a lot, along with his scholarly nature, something I admire in him, actually, as he has dedicated his skills, both his mind and his limited arms training in helping us out. When we marched into Traders Edge, Hiroaki started to bark orders and began to organize everything inside, and while it’s usually my job, I didn’t mind letting him do it. I’ve been meaning to train a successor, and was originally hoping Mutey may be able to, but he didn’t have the same skills with numbers and organization that Hiroaki did, and I was happy with his performance, glad that if anything were to happen to me, Sin had a good replacement in Hiroaki. Hiroaki had found something among the stockpiles of Traders Edge. He had it and a couple other documents delivered to my lab this morning, with a note that he wished for a better weapon as well, as not to have a repeat of his weapon breaking on a door, like it did at Tengu’s Vault. I’ll have to procure some Shek Steel, but since we are allies, that shouldn’t be to hard… However, it was the box, identical in every way to the box I found in Tengu’s Vault, except for it held something much, much different. Inside the box was blueprints, many of them, and the most important of them was the Memory core build. With it, and a lot of time, I can repair, finally, Prophets memory. I no longer need to risk him becoming my thrall, or the Nexus’s. Instead, I can Jerry rig the Nexus connection device to act as a compass, of sorts, to help me locate it. Now, I am just waiting on my Ex-Thralls to reappear. When they do, I can send them to scout locations that my Jerry rig compass says the Nexus is at…

(Ah! Got it written! The story is divided into at least two parts, second part replying to the first! Because I couldn't help myself and wrote quite a bit. Ah! And to the matter of Zuri's Refuge, I could quite easily see Hiroaki becoming the 'leader' of that area on behalf of the Sands of Hate and the growing Sand Kingdom. He is very fit for a civil administrator type role, so a local city role? Does suit him. I could also see him getting into a higher administration role as well if you have an idea like that that floats up or the like. However yes, I can quite easily see him taking the lead at Zuri's Refuge, and if you want to use him for that, I can easily incorporate that into his story, and enjoy doing so! Ah, though one request if we go that route. Give a reason for continued interactions with Laru. Possibly have her transferred there with him, or the one steadily making delivers to him or the like. Now, for story!) Zuri’s Refuge. It was… a poignant name. He had never met Zuri of course. He didn’t even realize that Sin had had a sister, until he heard the name and began to ask around. The others filled him in. Commander Joseph in particular seemed to have much to say of her, giving a calm, yet heartfelt recount of what he knew. Hiroaki regretted that he had never met this woman, Sin’s beloved sister. It was one of many regrets he had. But what was most important, was that Sin had given the name to this settlement with love and care, after someone who had been dear to him. And then, he had trusted a not insignificant degree of it’s management to Hiroaki’s talents. The clerk turned rebel had been motivated before. Now? He was even more driven. Bearing not only the weight of the future, and hopes of the people, but the reverent trust of a beloved sister’s memory, made manifest in the burgeoning settlement, a trust to turn into something worthy of her name and memory. It was a trust; he was resolved not to betray. He would let neither Sin, nor the spirit of his sister, down. However, in addition to his duties as a caretaker and manager of supplies and equipment for the growing settlement, was his first given duties as a soldier. He resolved to allow neither to falter. The raid on Tengu’s Vault was quick, though there was an embarrassing moment where his imperial naginata broke while bashing down the gate door. General Nibol seemed to find it amusing, much to Hiroaki’s embarrassment, and he had to find a replacement. By the time he had, they had already rushed in and secured the Vault. Joseph had also began taking their documents and securing old records found around the Vault, while Sin, or rather a Sands member he wasn’t as familiar with, one Abrerois, recruited a very large, very imposing man. Apparently, he was named Ogre. Appropriate. Then there was the assault on Bark. While they were attacking the noble’s house, he made sure to seize as many of Lady Sanda’s documents as possible from her home, and couldn’t help but notice she was stupid enough to keep a sizeable number. The numbers told him a story, namely, that his suspicions were correct. Bark had become the center for a large number of slaves to be shipped overseas. Disorganized, even chaotic in recent days, but there. General Nibol… he knew that the General had been looking for someone, in the slave camps, someone he hadn’t found. Perhaps whoever he sought was dead, or… elsewhere. Finally, however, for the campaign march, was the attack on Heng and Trader’s Edge. His… former home. It was worse than he thought, he would admit. The utter disrepair it had fallen into. Fighting in the streets between rebel and United Cities factions, the Free Traders also engaged in combat. It was more of a mass brawl than an invasion at this point. And it was one, where he took it upon himself to raid his former place of employment. The offices of Longen in the Trader’s Guild Headquarters. Longen had failed to clear it out. Those records, and the more secret notes and logs in Longen’s office? They would yield fantastic results, he was sure. Secrets that remained. He didn’t see Longen during the fighting, but he heard that he was captured, and taken. He did see Yamdu, one of his former co-workers and colleagues. He focused on fighting the samurai nearby, and not on the Hiver. He killed him. Later he heard that Longen had been defeated, and taken to the Anti-Slavers. That Lord Yoshinaga had been drowned by Cyber Beep. He didn’t hear anything about Yamdu. The surreal feeling that he had as he walked through the ruins of his old home… it didn’t quite leave him. He’d shopped here. Ate here. Worked here. Lived here. Known people here. And now there was corpses and destruction. That abandoned building there, with the collapsed roof? That had been his house before he left it. That had been his. He knew what he was getting into, when he joined the Hidden Sands, and told them how to destabilize and destroy the United Cities economy. He wasn’t naïve. He knew what had to happen, what his home had become, the evil that it represented. He knew that it had to be destroyed. He knew, in the shining eyes of former slaves and hopeful rebels, was a future worth fighting for, a future his old home could never have given him. He knew. But still. When he got back home to the Hidden Sands, after that section of the campaign was done? He moved off to an isolated part of the base, curled up in a corner, and cried. And by the time that they marched on Brink? His eyes were dry, and he was fit for battle again.

... ... ... It was later, that Hiroaki traded the business of war, back for the business of growth, life, and creation. Something he was quite glad to do. It took his mind off his earlier feelings. Still, Hiroaki sighed as he scribbled more notes and figures down on a set of parchment, being careful with every jotted note. More a matter of professionalism than anything else. They’d seized plenty of parchment and ink along with everything else during the assault on Heng and Trader’s Edge. He took an almost meditative joy in his scribework. Even a solace in it. Even as he fought the urge to strangle people he’d never met for their utterly contemptuous recording and accounting skills. Honestly… how did their allied factions survive with this kind of notetaking? And the Shek Kingdom!!! Why was it so difficult to ask them to write actual numbers for the amount of provisions they had to deliver!? “Hey.” The simple proclamation caused him to look up, to the grimacing face of the recently healed Laru, as she sat down across from him at the bar table. Despite her grimace, he felt an urge to smile. She was a welcome sight. “Hello Laru. How are your injuries?” He asked simply, to which she shrugged. “Healed. And I gave worse than I got.” She spoke with a smirk, before grimacing again. “What I don’t understand is how the Holy Nation’s even still around. I mean, I get the United Cities and Trader’s Guild, those attacks made sense. But seriously, Holy Nation? I thought the Sands had killed them all already! And why are they stupid enough to attack us when we killed their Phoenix person?” She grumbled, to which Hiroaki gave a wry, and mildly amused, smile. “From what I understand, the current story going around the Holy Nation remnants is that if they kill Sin, then they will gain the Divine Right of Okran, and become the Phoenix reborn themselves, to lead them in a glorious new crusade of purity. The collapse of their kingdom was apparently just as a ‘Divine Test’ that they, true believers who remain, must be overcome.” Laru snorted incredulously, raising her right eyebrow. “Seriously?” Hiroaki shrugged. “Indoctrination, denial, and fanaticism, make for one heck of a drug.” “I’ll take your word for it.” She replied bluntly, before eyeing his parchment. “So, what’s that paper you’re scribbling at now? More counting weapon and supply shipments?” She asked, to which Hiroaki sighed slightly. “Actually, THIS paper is food shipments from our allies, and a count of how many former slaves Zuri’s Refuge has taken in on what days. Basically, I’m figuring out how many mouths we have, and if we can feed them all.” He stated, looking down to the parchment again. “On allied provisions alone we should be fine, for the moment. But that’s not a permanent solution, in fact, as our own recent campaigns have proven, relying on distant outside sources is a phenomenally bad idea. Fortunately, Zuri’s Refuge is coastal, so there’s already been some development to establishing independent shipping efforts, but right now that’s undeveloped. It’s also hard to be entirely sure how many soldiers we have to feed, because the Rebel Swordsmen are the ones actually guarding the place. I know it’s just starting, but we can’t afford to make the same tactical and strategic errors that the Empire made.” He spoke, taking in a deep breath, and out slowly, brows furrowed as he kept working through the numbers. “If this idea of our own ‘Sand Kingdom’ is to ever reach fruition, to rise up as a beacon of freedom and hope as the old world falls away, we need to be smart. We need to be self-reliant. We have to find a way to ween ourselves off our allies supply networks as soon as possible, turn them supplemental instead of necessary. Something I intend to discuss with Commander Joseph at great measure, I’m hopeful that what I find in the Trader’s Edge records will assist in securing seed resources to make sure we can do just that. For now though, mostly, I just need to make sure that what we’re reliant on is, in fact, enough to feed the people we have.” He muttered, a bit more pressure to his quill with his words. “Hmmm.” Laru sounded simply, all she could seem to manage for his speech, before her eyes moved down to alight on another set of papers. “… And ‘that’ paper?” She asked. Hiroaki blinked, and turned his gaze to another stack of papers, sitting to his left. One comprised of records taken from Bark as well as Trader’s Edge, focused far less on cats, and far more on slave shipments. He seemed hesitant for a moment, before looking back to his work, and ‘tapping’ his quill against the parchment. “… General Nibol has been looking for his wife. He’s been looking for her for a long time. And he hasn’t found her, not at any of the camps. If I check through the records I’ve recovered from Trader’s Edge, Bark, and some of the camps, then maybe, I might be able to tell him if she’s been shipped overseas or not. Or if she escaped, or… if she’s dead. I might be able to answer that question for him. Maybe. Give him, if not hope, then some closure, at least.” He spoke quietly. Laru was silent for a moment. And then she spoke, in a calm and steady voice. “You’re a good man. You know that Hiro?” She asked, and Hiroaki looked back up to her with a blink of surprise, and then gave a soft smile. “Well, I’m trying. Thank you.” He stated simply, to which Laru returned a smirk. “You’re welcome.” She stated simply, before ‘stretching’ her arms over her head and standing up. “But you can’t hold your liquor, so! I’m going to go find a drinking buddy I can get smashed with.” She stated bluntly, prompting Hiroaki to chuckle. “Heheh, well, I can’t exactly disagree. Good luck in your search.” He wished, looking back to his writing. Only to hear her walking over to him, and feel her put a hand on his left shoulder. “Hey.” She spoke, getting his attention again, looking up to see her own eyes, calm, friendly, and concerned. “Don’t forget to take care of yourself, alright? Handling things is important. Helping our people? Important. But you’re important to.” She stated, giving his shoulder a squeeze, before walking off. He blinked, watching her walk away for a moment, before he shook his head, refocusing, and then smiled lightly. “… Hm.” He hummed, simply, to himself. A pleasant feeling in his chest. Then he straightened his shoulders, rolled them back slightly, and got back to work with the numbers. Making sure that Zuri’s Refuge would be fed…
