Kensington Orbit Without Scrollring Review

Thank you for such a detailed video on the features of both the mouse and scroll options. You answered all of my questions regarding the mouse and the freeware that I didn't even know I will need. 😂

Thanks for the extensive review and configuration information. I have the Kensington WITH scroll wheel. Unlike the standard mouse wheels, you can continuously scroll by keeping your finger on the wheel. You can also set the wheel sensitivity for even more speed. As mentioned, you also use the wheel during the zoom function. A comment mentioned "frequent left click failure." After 8 years of extensive use, I've only recently soldered in a replacement left switch, taken from a spare standard mouse. I have changed my mouse cable twice. The X-mouse software is not compatible with Linux systems but there is equivalent software. As previously mentioned, best of both worlds with the scroll wheel, if you don't find the price prohibitive.

Great video tutorial on how to configure X-Mouse Button Control! I have the Orbit WITH scroll ring and still set it up this way. It's nice to have two ways to scroll.

I too have that older kensington that i retired to backup status after 21 years 4 months ago. I thought I had to pull it out of retirement already as the ball in my new orbit (watching review as I type) had become jumpy. Had already tried cleaning the little rollerballs with alcohol but no difference. Replaced the 3 plastic balls with 2mm steel ball bearings and it's now smoother / silkier to use than when new. The bearings are cheap on ebay for 20 so I've got plenty of spares!

Interesting review of the orbit. I'm trying to replace an ancient Logitech 'side-mount' wired trackball and was interested in the Kensington Orbit wired unit. Thanks for your review!

I'm really happy for this video because I was able to dig up my Logitech Marble Mouse USB and scroll like I've wanted to with it. Only thing I added in from all your steps is set the 'unblock' from default 750ms down to 400ms. I'll probably set it to 250ms once I get used to this. Reason is, I want it to only trigger with near simultaneous left-right clicks, otherwise it gets in the way of my rapid work flow. And, I jack up the 'Acceleration' in Windows so it's accurate when slow, but moves quick over larger distances. But yeah, the scrollring is just clutter that is actually more extraneous movements. I love my Logitech Marble Mouse USB. I think it's the most perfect pointing device ever. At their current prices I sure hope it never breaks. I have no idea why they cost so much now.

Thanks for the video! I actually bought this one and I think this is the best one by far, the scroll is better than the others in linux the default is you scroll while you hold the right click. The expert and slimblade are just too expensive the expert is slanted and the slimblade seems that the buttons are meeh, this is not a professional review but if you are worried about the scroll it's really really good...

I think the major complain with Kensington trackballs right now is the left click. They go bad real quick. Another thing we gotta take in consideration is that when you create a new product the main goal is to make the job easier to the customers. Customers buy something when they feel the need to make a task easier for them. Example; Old knob Television Vs New Tv's with remote controller(90's). Why having the customer press two buttons before scrolling ...when non of the previous mouses in the market make you do that. Orbit was the response from Kensington to customers complains about the scrolling wheel not been there where they need it to be. Thats why it failed. Now, dont think im attacking your video , you have a nice video and great point of view from you part but I guess this mouse is for people who doesnt really care much about making an extra effort when using a new product. And I guess I am one of those ...thats why im watching it right now👍🏽

thanks for the video. I am looking to buy trackball, my main use is Inkscape & fusion 360 & other cad programs would you recommend it, considering that I need to do a lot of click and drag operation. what do you think?

just gor one and I am disapointed. The mouse sensor makes an audible high pitched noise, the ball jumps out of its place when scrolling down and the whole device wobbles as its surface is not flat. The DPI resolution of the sensor seems also very low to me.

I worked around this with an AutoHotKey script. I can scroll by holding middle mouse, click as normal with middle mouse, and even toggle into scroll mode by double clicking middle mouse or inputting a keyboard shortcut. Loads of other settings like logarithmic speed settings, sensitivity, etc. It's pretty great!!! You don't need a scroll ring at all, and honestly, it kind of sucks compared to scrolling with the trackball itself.

It's nice to see a die-hard fan of a classic trackball, and it indeed looks and feels nicer than the scroll ring version. Just the ball is like no other in the market. But, what about zooming? That breaks the whole thing. I used to see these mostly in point of sale systems that require nothing more than pointing and clicking where a stationary device is better than a mouse.

I like my expert mouse & slimblade, right now I have a keyboard tray & I try to find a smaller size device that can actually fit in the tray, I also want to try a smaller size ball & see if I can get a faster response on gaming. Scroll ring is a wonderful invention but could be bothersome when accidentally toggle. Do you mess around with the speed accleration of your mouse pointer?

Good night. Can you guide me how to set up the 64221 model in Windows 10? I've had it for many years and I can't do kensingtonworks to recognize this ps/2 model of ours.

When did this version come out? I thought I got mine like 20 years ago, I think it’s pretty old to.

Mine arrived today and I cant get the software to work. It wont recognize it eve if I try to add it

I have this one and don't like it. The black rubber part is sticky to the touch and the ball falls off. I have the Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball Mouse for right hand and like it much better. Logitech M705 Marathon Wireless Mouse (not a trackball) just blows everything away. Purchased as MK700/710 keyboard mouse combo.

You sound like a lovely lady and this was a nice review but all I ended up doing was thinking GET ON WITH IT.
