The Montreal Canadiens and LA Kings have made a trade, swapping draft picks.

3 potential outcomes in my view for this pick. Montreal keeps it and selects a player they think might not have dropped to 26. They trade it along with a young prospect to acquire an even higher pick in the teens. They use it to acquire a young player.

These trades usually happen on the draft floor. The only reason I can think of that would explain why now is that something else is in play, and this needed to be done beforehand.

198 = 7th round. No 2nd round pick for 2024, but the day is still young. Cost SJ their first at 14 (which was Pittsburgh's pick) and 2nd rnd pick at 42 (NJ's pick) to move up 3 spots to 11th Habs moved up 5 spots and pretty much cost them the same, but with the 7th round pick thrown in. So about the same pick . Cannon fodder to facilitate another trade? Or who are they looking at that they think wouldn't have been available by 26, but should be available by 21? Maybe 6'2" 201lbs C in Cole Beaudoin?

At this moment... this is a win for the Kings... more lottery tickets and there shouldn't be thaaaaaat much drop off between 21 and 26. Unless Montreal scoops someone who falls. They could both be cooking deals to move around again or acquire players. If this holds, can't wait to see who they each end up drafting.

It’s basically 3rd n 7rd. Those picks most likely never make nhl. Moving up 5 spots is huge if you look at simulations. For example Liam Greentree comes into play now!

Ordinarily I might agree with you except LA's draft record in the 2nd and 7th rnds is exceptional LA has drafted at least 5 NHL players in the 2nd since 2017and like 10 since Yanetti was hired and 5 7th rnd picks over 200gp and their last 3 7th rnd picks look like money in the bank to this point so I'll definitely take those picks odds are in LA's favor

It feels like this night took forever to get here! Imagine if we took michkov last year, and we get Demidov this year? But i digress, im not here to talk about how bad last year's 5th overall pick went, this is about this years! Here's my top 5 i want, in order.... 1. Demidov 2. Lindstrom 3. Eiserman (He'd be insane on the pp with Caufield) 4. Tij Iginla 5. Berkly Catton I love the trade to move up 5 spots, and if the Habs pick a defensemen this year with our 5th...I should move all the nice stuff out of my room before the draft, just in case. This draft is huge, i hope they get it right, whoever they choose.

The only way I see this as viable is if Hughes has another deal set up for that 21st pick. The other deal being contingent on getting early 20th spot in the 1st round. So for now I'll withhold judgment but as it stands I see this as a fail at this point in time. Full judgment to be determined. Or perhaps he's got wind that someone ranked early mid teens is falling down the board but won't last to 26 but could be there at 21. I don't know, a 1st, 2nd, and later pick to move 5 spots? I think 1st and 3rd should have done that.

There is a world of difference between 21 and 26. It may be the difference between getting Charlie Elick or getting Dominik Badinka on defense. Or the difference of getting Jett Luchanko vs getting Yegor Surin on the wing. Well worth the price to move up.

@@jamieaspinall5716 Yes but it was actually 24th and 54th bundled to move up 2 ranks. 😁 The best outcome Kent can hope from this trade is that people will have forgot in ten years. (Did not remember Koivu was taken so low, pretty good steal considering he was pretty much in competition with Forsberg for best european at the time)

If Chicago, Anaheim, Columbus are dumb enough to take fowards instead of defencemen I WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE for us to draft either Buium or Dickinson and trade Matheson/Barron PRONTO for a double A NHL prospect. like Ruther McGROARTY vs Barron and a third round draft pick would be absolutely fire. for Matheson legit we could aquire Laine but with his 9.9 cap is scary. Laine-Dach-Newhook healthy for a seson would be Frickeshly scary.

McGroarty would be nice but I doubt Barron and a R3 gets it done. As for Laine he's at a 8.7M cap hit, and Columbus already have Werenski and Provorov on the left side.
