I like the way you reviewed this bike based on what it is and how it is priced. Too many times I see reviewers comparing these inexpensive entry level bikes with bikes costing thousands of dollars. Makes me wonder what the motivation is, and glad they are not reviewing cars because every ford, chevy and toyota would probably be compared against mercedes, BMW and ferrari. BTW: I have a Schwinn Axum DP and even with the upgrades, it's cheaper and better than many bike store bikes priced for hundreds more.
This is definitely a specific bike for what it is designed for and used for. I try to take a realistic approach on my video's. Who is it for? and Who will most likely pick it up? Appreciate the comment and glad you liked the video!!!
i got me some lg tshirt from walmart i wash them i dry them they shrunk so i got the xlg did the same they shrunk now they xlg fit perfect while the large does not.i pay $4.98 each them i when i got me a lg shirt from the nike store i pay $25 for it i wash it dry it now it did the same as the $4.98 s shirt from walmart people dont undestand that just cuz is sold at walmart is a walmart item that walmart manifacture cuz they also sell xbox playstattion i phone and walmart dont manifacture it is just busines contract the only diferent probably is some item like this bike are just manifacture and send to store while expensive bike are manifacture and double inpected to make sure part are good and not broken or loses cuz i am sure if walmart pay the xtra for this item sold at walmart to be inspected and make sure they no broken or missing part exetera they will not cost cheap either
@@joseanrodriguez2005Many companies like Walmart definitely cut corners to get to a certain price point. But I have also seen cases where the brand is what is driving the sales price, not the quality or cost to the manufacturer. I worked in the camera industry and saw cases where the same exact product would be sold at 3 times the price just because they put a brand label on it. There are also different business philosophies such as the fast nickles (like Walmart) vs. slow dollars (like bike shops and other specialty stores). As for quality meaning a higher price some of the most unreliable vehicles are the most expensive, Tesla, Mercedes, Jaguar, Lincoln, etc.
@@joseanrodriguez2005 I’d also add that one major difference between the bike store and Walmart is the assembly process. Bike stores have dedicated trained mechanics versus contracted mechanics hired for a day to assemble as many bikes as they can.
My take away… we are the same height. J/k. I think its a cool bike from Wally world. Only thing I can think will hurt a new riders experience is probably from the in-store assembly. Other then that the bike offers alot for the price, even the XCM fork seems unreal at walmart. Awesome video!
Put about 170 miles on this bike so far this month, and I absolutely love it! I'm pretty new to serious cycling (about 3 months), and I had no problems putting this together myself. After a few Park tool videos, I think I have the shifting dialed in pretty well. I do plan on making some upgrades down the line. Already did the pedals and the seat, but I definitely agree about the brakes (will be upgrading those). For context, I use this bike for simply paved park trails and very light gravel/rocky trails. Also agree, this bike is excellent for beginner cyclists. If this bike feels and runs this good, I can't imagine how a more expensive bike feels! 😲
How do you know if the person building your bike did a good job? What did you look at when you were in Walmart to see if there was anything wrong with the bike?
For me, there are a few things for sure I look at but I always recommend doing a basic bike check. Brakes, tightness of all bolts, tire pressures, shifting and greasing parts. I am a better safe than sorry kind of guy 😅😅😅
@@chickensendies wow quick response time! How do you check to see if the parts are greased properly? Do you take it apart or something or can you just tell based off how easily things move?
@Bimmer Won I try to respond pretty quick but can't always 😅😅😅 Sadly you can only really tell by taking parts apart. Main stuff I grease is wheel axles and headsets. If it is stuff you are uncomfortable with you can find a buddy or even take it to a local bike shop to you 😁
This seems like the bike you want to trawl WM for returns on. $400 is right at the verge of too dear for a project bike to get the Chinesium parts cannon fired at.
It is definitely right at the line fore sure. You are almost at the price at a entry Giant or Trek. It is a decent bike but if it was under $300 it would be a great deal! Not terrible at $400 but interesting none the less. Always appreciate you, Dave!!!
@Chicken Sendies I appreciate you too. So, at $300 you're on the Axum, which is 90% the bike at 75% the price, and a better starting point for an upgrade. $400 is the Axum DP which bypasses trying to find a dropper and lever for the Kent. The Suntour fork is passable for light riding, but you're already talking about a Judy, a clutched Advent der, hydro brakes, and pedals. I just don't see the value in the Kent @ $400. But I noticed when the first wave of decent Schwinns hit WM my local store had some that were returned back and deep discounted because of things like RD damage and such. So clearance shopping on returns might be my way to go for these were I actively looking. And looping back around to droppers, PNW has a few in 27.2, plus a summer sale currently on their web page.
I just think Kent Bicycles are subpar, I think junk when I think Kent, i am not averse to Walmart , I ride a Schwinn Axum dp but I only used frame dropper and wheelset.
Great review and love your enthusiasm. I'm just getting back into MTB since quitting in the 90's and got this Kent because it had all the newer standards for cheap. I agree that it's perfect for a 5'10" person and that the brakes suck, but I don't have experience with hydraulics. Would better brake pads help? A friend had tektro mechanical disk brakes that were way smoother and stronger than these. What exactly makes these stock brakes suck so much?
I believe brake pads could absolutely help!!! But, For me it is a mix between the pads and levers. They are just on the cheaper end so getting them dialed in is just harder to do than it should be 😅😅😅 Really appreciate your kind words and glad you enjoyed the video! 😁😁😁
EVERYONE is out for the Trouvaille right now. I just saw one sitting humbly at the end of the line at my local Walmart. I thought, "what's going to be the next hot big box bike to hit the shelves?" 😅Everyone will drop the Trouvaille and be hot on that one! 😅nice video! Keep em coming! Anxious to see what you do to this bike.
I picked one up a few weeks ago and have gotten numerous comments on how nice it looks. It's perfect for riding around a city and through parks. How many consumers purchase a mountain bike to actually ride on these punishing trails ? I think most just buy them because they are more rugged street bikes.
I honestly think it is a mix. Beginner trail riders are gravitating to this bike for its price and stock components. It is very easy to upgrade into a nice Beginners MTB. But, straight from the store, it is perfect for what you are using it for!!! Enjoy your Kent, Paul!!!!
Nope, You did not miss it! I actually have not weighed it stock but just by moving it around she is a bit heavy stock 🤣🤣🤣 Stock components are alloy according to Kents actual website 😁
have you ever considered a PNW Coast dropper with the 40mm of suspension travel.. Also, I wouldnt go longer than a 125mm on the 27.2 ... It might get bendy
Im thinking about getting a new budget hardtail. I currently ride a 2009 giant revel.0 which is still very nice, but also very outdated. Im looking at this kent, but also the schwinn axum. Do you have any experience with the axum? Maybe do a comparison video?
@John Chavez I was gonna say I do HAHAHAHA But, Honestly they both are very nice. The dropper post on the schwinn is hard to beat. The Kent has nicer geo though. If you can find them in stock I'd tell you to try them and see which one you like better 😁
That is a great question! I actually was able to take the little knob off and reinstalled it and it works now! I think it was just messed up lol Good catch, Abby!!!
I would say it depends on how you feel over upgrading it yourself. Marlin 4 from a local bike shop comes with some great support from them but if you plan on doing everything yourself trouvaille is a great option 😁
That is a very interesting comparison now...... I'd say if you are just getting into mtbing the trouvaille all the way. If you already have a decent trail bike and just want something fun then I'd say the ALX 😁😁😁 This topic could be a fun comparison video!!!
@@chickensendies thanks for your quick reply! I actually purchased Dolomite alx, partially based on your initial experiences with it and some other reviews. I installed a 1000w watt mid drive (bafang), hydraulic brakes, 11-42t cassette, and zoom suspension seat post. I don’t really have any other comparisons, but it is a lot of fun. My main complaint right now is that after riding on trails for about 30 minutes, my hands and arms are pretty numb. I’m guessing that’s because of no front suspension? I guess I’m kind of wondering why/if MTBer’s pick regular Mountain bikes over fat bikes? Is it because of suspension, weight, nimbleness? I guess I’m just curious about your thoughts, as you can probably tell, I am a noob.
@@cdbrownification Very nice sounding build!!! I honestly think your points are exactly why they prefer them. Fat bikes can be a little intimidating because of the size and lack of suspension imo
