Had a driver pass me with oversize load, two chains were dragging on passenger side, one of the rear duals was blown out and nothing left but the rim, rear oversize load sign was hanging on for dear life with a bungee cord and flopping in the wind like a wet noodle. Not 5 minutes later, and not more than 5 or 6 miles down the road, I got stopped for having a tail light out. Which was working just 2 hours before I got stopped. Sometimes it's just not your day no matter what you do or how careful and diligent you are.

I love the attitude of "I'll find something wrong with you".

I dealt with the Ohio State Highway Patrol for 30 years, on vehicle inspections, they often made their own rules.

I'm from Ohio, if you can't get a ticket in Ohio, you cant get one anywhere! When I go to Florida, I'll count the number of State patrol in each state. You’ll see more in the state of Ohio, than youll see in all the states combined.

You are one of the safest and most professional guys/companies I've ever seen. I've watched you tie down many a piece of equipment and I am always impressed with your knowledge of chain sizing and tie down points. I love that you ask the men to wear safety glasses in the shop as well. Keep it up and don't let "the man" get you down with his bureaucracies and bad attitude......maybe he's just unloved. Really like the backroad windshield time, I do miss riding around those Pennsylvania back roads.

I wouldn't let it bother you too much about some inspection people. I owned a construction company and the stories our guys went through are unbelievable. In code books it states that the decision of the building official is the ruling factor. That is tough when you do it by the book and they can overrule you based on their opinion. A little authority gives some people a strange sense of wanting to ruin people's day. Hang in there.

As a former Ohio resident I can attest that driving in Ohio sucks!

I am a retired tour bus driver. A little west of Atlantic City I got pulled over by a NJ dot. My bus was brand new. I had about 10,000 miles on her. He spends about an hour trying to find something, I don’t know maybe he didn’t like Canadians. He found nothing but as he was handing me the paperwork, an old bus with the engine doors flapping and oil all up the backend goes by.I looked at the wreck of a bus pass by. I said guess you didn’t want to get dirty. He wasn’t happy but nothing he could do now.

I live in Ohio. It’s very frustrating with the amount of state highway patrol and rules they try to enforce. They are constantly out there just bothering people.

I agree, why require less signage especially when neighboring states require them? The scary part is that it make sense to them.

It would be great if interstate commerce had one set of regulations, so everyone could learn and not get caught up in having to have different refs in every state.

I drove truck for yrs in Ohio and West Virginia , towards the end it got to the point I could just expect getting pulled over at least once a week , over weight , over width , tires not good enough , marker lights out and anything else they could think of . I work for the county now and try to be as safe as possible , its nice to just get in a truck and enjoy driving it instead of worrying about DOT .

I think I got most of Clint's little round up of his run in with the D.O.T. - interesting that The Land of the Free & Home of the Brave has this kind of crap too! In U.K. we have the Ministry of Transport as the authority for most things Transport but all the inspection stuff is left to the police and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency or as they used to be - Vehicle and Operator Services Agency. The best thing you can do to avoid their attention is disguise your rigg as European and try to look as Eastern as possible if actually stopped. Most of them and their police outriders are unmitigated Shower of Bastewards! I was once "requested" to pull in by a uniform jumping out in front of me quite suddenly with an upstretched arm. About eight guys then descended on my lightweight tipper - determined to find "something". One neat trick was to put an eight foot pry bar across the jacked up front wheels and have their biggest guy jump up and down of it while another one footed the brakes. As my wheel rotated about an inch - "that's a nick" they cried and booked me! It was plainly obvious that this was all they had waited for before knocking off. Many blokes so booked would've just put it down to experience and paid - but that ain't me! I answered a summons to Magistrates Court ( for those who don't know the system - these places are quite biased in favour of the Plaintiff - the Police - you are certainly not innocent until proven - no, no, quite the opposite! Three Magistrates usually sit - they are members of the local great & good who volunteer and are schooled in Law by a Clerk of the Court ( usually an insufferable brown nose!) No one would have recognised the event I've just described from the "evidence" produced against me and even I was 50 / 50 whether it was a good idea to cause a fuss. Me being me - I went for the big fat slob who'd been pry bar bouncing - ( oh by the way - if you appear in person over here, no attorney - you're allowed a bit more leeway and of course you can do your own cross examination - while they have to answer. No policeman feels comfortable doing this - especially if they've lied. I asked him how much he weighed - 18stone, I then asked when was the last time he'd done a police fitness test, had he ever been left behind gasping by escaping criminals. Growing a brighter red by the minute - I then asked him why he thought himself proficient to test my vehicle - to which he smugly trotted out 16 years of experience and innumerable qualifications - but I smiled my best smile. Well, you must have examined many trucks like mine? Oh come on, come on - just a moment ago you were boasting of you prowess..... this went on for a while with him sweating ever more until I opened a case I'd brought to reveal a collection of brake shoes ( yes that long ago!) kindly pick out the type fitted to my truck. Though he stammered and protested - I'd also brought an expert to verify uniqueness that could be spotted from a distance for anyone who really knew brake parts. The case was thrown out - but instead of three points on my license and £100 fine, I lost most of a day at Court and hours preparing - but if it had cost me ten times as much - I'd have still done it.

You should send one of your boys to go take video of the off site location...then view it in the hotel later.

Agree with you 100% with people on the phone, I’m here in Georgia and at least 50% of the people you pass are on the phone, it’s a law here that you can’t touch your phone when driving. Not even at a red light.

I am more impress on the knowledge and teaching of heavy equipment hauling than watching your lip correspond with your video. Now don't get me wrong I hate watching movies that do that as it is annoying. But your so lay back and explain so good that I really didn't notice that. Almost every DOT officer I have dealt says they don't care what another DOT officer said or did they know more than the last one!!! Trucking is so fun!!!

I always like the auction videos and I'm always amazed that some people who send their equipment don't take time to clean the dirt out of the tracks, I'm definitely not talking about some of the auction paintjobs that just know someone is trying to hide something. That loader just had a slight oil leak, LOL!! I'm with you Clint, more is better when it comes to the oversize signs.

Figures it was Ohio. Meanwhile they have some of the worst roads in the country. But hey, we're gonna make sure that you don't have too many warning signs on your vehicle. You have a great channel Clint and you rig is beautiful.

I ran into the sign situation in the 90s in Louisiana. I was 8'8"" wide and permitted, way under gross, travelling from MCAS Yuma to MCAS Cherry Point. Had my wide load signs on and trucking along. I got pulled in at the first weigh station into LA on I-20 and was told I couldnt have wide load signs on and to put oversize load signs on. I dont know if he was messing with me hoping I didn't have them but I did. Like you, as soon as I got to the state line I had to change them back. Lousiana and California were the 2 states that messed with me the most but I always was legal, with the paperwork in order, no tickets, no accidents. Be safe.

As far as the oversized sign goes there is nothing wrong with that. I've always heard safety is number one. He was just being a butt in my opinion. As far as drivers go the things people do while driving is why I stopped driving OTR. I seen a sign on the back of a semi trailer that said it ALL IF YOU DON'T LIKE TRUCKS STOP BUYING STUFF. SOME PEOPLE JUST DON'T GET IT!!!!!! THANKS FOR SHARING CLINT STAY SAFE 🙏

As you were saying you would explain later about the oversize signs, I made my guess as to what happened. And, yep, I was right.

I’m sure the person that made that no oversized loads signs under 10ft has never stepped foot inside a truck or chained down a machine, more is better in my book especially with all the people texting now driving

Clint I think you do a great service letting other truck drivers know what's going on with the rules for different states. Makes no sense as you said for not having more safety devices like signs or flags, maybe it is a way to collect tickets for the state.

Few years ago, at a seminar for landscapers in Michigan, there was a class about dot rules and load tie down, the two motor carrier cops had two different interpretations of a few rules, and they thought that was fine

My dad always told me when buying a dozer always look at the sprockets the rails the chains and the rollers if the tracks are wore out u dont want it unless u have a lot of money to replace them

Clint the DOT are the same here in Canada, it like they can’t make a rule that is the same from one coast to the other. I was in the trucking industry for 30 years hauling crude oil and one of our trailers one day so the DOT says need upgraded with its venting system, sent engineer drawing didn’t help. Now this trailer had been used for years and gone through that scale many times then out of the blue not legal. So trailer was loaded with crude when it was held, i asked if we could continue out trip 100 miles to get off loaded then have trailer steamed out and repaired at tank dealership. His answer was NO, so we had to send another truck from our base to unload it and then have trailer empty then it could be allowed back on the road… long story short after about $15,000 i repairs etc trailer was allowed back one the road. I do believe and would do the same thing as you more the signs the better but your 100% correct the public driving to are looking at there phones or texting… i also know that as im a volunteer fireman and have seen many MVC’s caused by that reason!!!

Being on the receiving end of inspectors with that gentleman's level of zeal is irksome, but it gives me the warm and fuzzies, as a motorist that shares the road. Up here in Canada hand held mobile phone usage while driving is labeled as distracted driving and is prohibited, but, put it in a mobile phone stand and you can poke at it to your hearts content. FYI, eating while driving is also considered distracted driving. How Tesla's huge center touch screen is not considered a distraction is beyond me. You better know how to turn on that wiper BEFORE you need it. As a Tesla fanboy.

I went through a level 5 federal DOT inspection in Michigan years ago and passed with flying colors and the cop wrote "Excelent" on his paperwork, I told him you misspelled excellent, and he said well I can't remember the last time I wrote that!

Remember what Officer Hoover said. A positive attitude will get you a long ways with a DOT officer,sounds like you did just fine.😊

When I was drivin' a big truck, I'd drive a fair amount of extra miles to stay out of Ohio because they're so hard on truckers there. I'm glad you cut all the windshield time out in the edit. A big reason that there's only been a few truckin' movies made is because it's tough to make them anything other than flat out boring. Thanks, much appreciated by a viewer.

Clint, l live in Columbus Ohio and some of the rules are ridiculous. I’ve been pulled over twice..was actually told by motor carrier that I’ll find something, it’s my job.

I know your frustration with the DOT. I had 150 rental power line repair utility trucks. I had every truck DOT every year but when I sent them to other states usually on emergency jobs or disasters and you would think DOT regulations would be the same in each state but you just proved how screwed up the system is. It became easier to pay the fines than try to be perfect in each state.

They should have on standard for signs for all states. Instead playing guessing games on if you're legal hauls force ach state.

Your problems with the DOT sounds familiar. Used to load produce in CA drive all the way to the east coast, get to VA pull onto the scales and they claim you are over weight. Pay a fine and on the way again. Oh I drove cross country for years 18 wheeler.

After painting the frame on your truck all you need to do now is paint your equipment trailer either blue to match the trucks cab paint or the normal black to match the frame.

Thank goodness the government is there to keep us safe.

There should be a standardized law that covers the lower 48 States. Then Alaska, Hawaii, Porto Rico, etc. can establish laws to their individual liking. Blue Sky's.

That’s crazy he made you take signs off. Also you know the true feelings of the DOT officers when their whole goal is to find something wrong that’s my whole issue with it. Safety has very little to do with it.

Ohio has always been a truckers pain in the rear. Only place you can do a decent speed is on their turnpike. Almost as bad as driving in Commiefornia.

Those rules about weight and with shall be federal. At least then you and your college truckers know what there up to. Same difference in Europe between countries...but then again the Dutch roads are being built more sturdy then then the east European roads.

I've been pushing for a national motor vehicle code for a long time. No more state licenses, or state laws.

As a retired truck driver I see you enjoyed your stay in Wilmington Ohio. That’s something that you can expect at that location. You are time ahead to go across I-70 and skip Wilmington completely , very little difference in mileage. Where was the other scale from your place?

Officer Hoover has mentioned a few times that the individual DOT Officer is allowed to interpret the “rules” on some things in their own way. Hence one scale not saying anything about you being a “criminal” by displaying your oversize signage. Maybe that’s why the other one said he would find something if they didn’t. It’s pretty bad that the rules aren’t universal across the country. They’re much better than they were 50 years ago but still not the same.

He probably had to remove the signs because you told him DOT didn’t find anything at the other weigh station so he was proving a point. In my 30 years years of truck driving your always meet that one officer that have to find at least one thing no matter how how small it is

😂😂😂 speaking of Ohio, in Akron, Ohio we have one bridge that is marked at 14' 2" and you would be surprised at how many times that thing has been hit by driver's that were measured at 13 foot even. It's on interstate I76/77 at the East avenue exit that bridge has been closed going over the expressway for two years now.

I think more is better ,when i drove CDL alway smooth sailing except when I'd drive a cement mixer the California highway patrol commercial enforcement team always pulled me over knowing when we do freeway work with 1 1/2 rock 5k mix were heavy i got couple verbal warning to tell batch plants stop over loading since I always had a new peterbuilt mixer or kept it spotless they liked it plus good attitude goes further

Back in the 90's, used to haul live animals into and out of, or across Ohio, back to Ontario. Ohio scales always a PIA! Never a weight problem, always issues no other states asked about.

I’ve never had a problem in Ohio but California DOT once told me my oversized signs were a distraction to other drivers. Of course I didn’t argue I just said well the law is the law.
