I found this in my pile of Kenwood radios and its time to start testing the multitudes of radios here. This old collectible radio actually performed way above my expectations, so a big tick for this one for sure. Drop me a line if you are after a lower priced HF radio, it has a few marks on top case but its not ugly and this may be a great answer to your HF Radio needs. email is brenton@posnav.com.au

I used to run a non S model that I purchased at a hamfest. It didn't have the crank dial and the display was wonky. It was my first ham radio and was quickly replaced by my brand new Yaesu FT-101EE that I still have today.

If given one of these in working order, would it be suitable as a first radio for the supported frequency bands? Someone might be giving me one they no longer want.

Imo, once you learn the purpose of all the controls and learn how to tune it to transmit, it's easier to use than modern hf radios. Everything is right there in front of you, and you don't have to go through menu trees to get what you want.

New ham here ive got an icom 5100A uhf/vhf would this be a good starter hf radio ive found one for $250 NZD but if i were to buy that what type of antenna and powersupply would i need
