Kenworth K100 (Trying to) First Start in a Long Time!

Trying to fire up a K100, sitting anywhere from 5 to 20 years. It ha a Small Cam 350 Cummins and a 16 speed transmission. Couldn’t get it to pick up fuel from tanks, only would run in ether. Either way, not a project I can take on right now. Video is pretty short but I wasn’t able to film everything. Thanks!

You should have drained that old fuel and lines to, that fuel is bad after years, the torsion bar suspension is the best riding truck I've ever driven and I did break a torsion bar one time crossing a cattle guard and it did drop completely down on one side but I was able to limp it to Kenworth about 100 miles away, the small cam 350 is what I learned how to drive with in a 1971 W900 with a 5 and a 4 that a classic K100 cabover you have there

I believe that shifter is a Road Ranger Quadra Shift. I had the pleasure of driving one for a few hundred miles in May of 1974, when I was 18. Dad took me along on a haul and after we were unloaded, he asked me, want to learn to drive it? I said we'll ya! I'd been riding along on occasion with him for 8 yrs, watching and learning so he let me run it on the super slab. Only clutch it on the main 4 speeds otherwise the spider is like the high low of a 13 speed. Once out of 1st gear, never put the select in number 1 only as low as number 2 for instance while up shifting and you are in 1-4 only put the selector back to number 2 the upshift to second gear, 2-2, then 2-3, then 2-4. Back to 2 then upshift to 3rd gear 3-2,3-3,3-4 back to 2 upshift to 4th gear 4-2,4-3,finally 4-4 when upshifting all you need to do is select the next gear up on the air ride, let off the throttle at 2100 wait a second for it to shift and get back on the throttle. Down shifting, select the next lower gear, when you reach 1700, quickly release the throttle all the way then mash it down again and it will down shift. That half moon metal piece sticking out on the bottom below the selector slide is there to remind you, that is number 2 and don't go below this, except in first gear on the main. This is only the 2nd time I've seen this type of transmission.

It would probably run if you were able to tilt the cab and loosen the injector line fittings at the injector pump, then bleed the air from them by cranking the motor over until you see fuel coming out. The truck has been sitting for so long it almost certainly has air in the fuel lines from the tanks leading to the IP. You are likely picking up the air in the lines, but I'd bet the truck can suck fuel from the tank once most of that air is purged.
@matthewbarnes7075

Pretty much every line on the truck is dry rotten, so I bet that's the problem.

You might find that to get the transmission to go in reverse there is a lever up on the dash near the heater control you have to flip. Looks like the old front brake limiter control they had on Ford big trucks. Also the fuel tank on the passenger side with the funny spout is original for early 70’s, as is the three piece roof, with fibreglass front and rear moulded sections with a riveted aluminum centre section. In 77 they went to a one piece moulded roof. If you look at the original fuel tank it will have the year of manufacture. The serial # of the truck will be one letter, and six digits. If the letter is a J it’s a Kansas City built truck, M is for Montreal. Might be a C for Chillicothe Ohio, but I’m not sure if they where in production back then. Someone commented that they thought the truck was newer because the cab had ladders. Not so. This truck was a upgrade option, called “ splendour “. It had upgraded padded interior with colour tones. Torsion Bar suspension was a KW original. They where good is well maintained. You had to Jack the whole rear of the truck of the ground when greasing to do an effective job. They where smooth enough loaded. Not my choice for hauling high centre of gravity loads back in the day like swinging beef. Called that because the cattle carcasses are cut into quarters, and the whole load is suspended from hooks attached to the ceiling of the trailer. Nothing of the load is touching the floor. They don’t ship beef that way anymore as the trailers where expensive to build, and it meant that each food store you delivered to had to employ a real butcher ( meat cutter ) to get the specific cuts from the animal. In the 80’s most packers boxed the meat in “ primal cuts “, then you didn’t need a specialist in each meat department. Sorry I got off the track. We hauled hanging beef with this suspension and it was good for some hair standing on the back of your neck moments in hilly terrain, and about town while partially loaded.

Ether the breath of death. Let it do its thing and pull fuel, heat the cylinders by turning it over for 30 seconds then let it heat soak for a few then continue on with same procedure. It'll run, or crack injectors open till fuel runs out

How did the cattle pot end up on its side? That's a pretty interesting spec'ed truck with the Spicer 4x4 and torsion bar suspension. The transmission would be neat to keep and run assuming it doesn't need any major work. Parts for the Cummins are available, but the torsion bar and transmission parts are long gone. The interior of these trucks is normally blitzed after sitting for so long. That one looks solid and a great candidate for a hobby truck.

@stansdds
@stansdds Год назад
I'd say it's a 1972 model, probably late 1972. 1972 was a transitional year for the K100, with KW introducing the 108 inch BBC K100-VIT, entry ladders, and then the low mounted, flush fit door handles.

O-H-I-O Porters 🇺🇸 Cabovers Rule! Well, I sure like seeing this old cabover! This was a bit of a teaser, but it cranked over pretty well. My dad had a new 1969 model & I loved climbing up into that truck to take a nap at 4 or 5 years old. Torsion bars…I guess that’s what they had about that time. Is it a 12 or 24 volt start? Does it have centerpoint steering? Are you planning on getting the trailer, too? This should be nice seeing this rig come back to life! How long has it been sitting? Keep it comin! 🥰🤩✌️

@@matthewbarnes7075 🇺🇸 The truck is still impressive & I hope that you are able to purchase this rig if you so choose to do so. The frame appeared to be aluminum, but still in rather good shape. @georgerenton965 Год назад
Ok. Stop torturing the starter. You need a new source of fuel. Then most importantly you must prime the fuel pump. There is a hex plug on the top of pump body near where the fuel solenoid is. If you don’t know where that is, then stop what your doing and do some research. Fill the pump body with fuel with a small funnel. A gas line filter cut in half fits well. Put the plug back it and try again. If still no luck, if the pump has a mechanical tach drive in the mounting flange where the pump bolts up to the back of the air compressor, remove the drive cable from the pump, and watch to see if the drive is rotating when the engine is cranked over. If the drive isn’t rotating, chances are the fuel pump drive coupling woodruff key is sheared off the pump drive shaft. Ie the internals of the pump are seized up. Remove the pump and repair or replace the pump with a matching code pump.
