Raghavan has restored 142 lakes in India so far, and three more are underway. One of the lakes that he has restored is the Kenikarai lake in Ramanathapuram district, which has been dry for 15 years. The article says that the lake is spread over seven acres and will provide water for irrigation and drinking to 4,000 people once restored. According to this tweet, another lake that he has restored is the Ottankadu lake in Thanjavur district, which was dry for 60 years. The tweet says that the lake is spread over 24 acres and has a water storage capacity of 36 crore litres (360 million litres). If we assume that these two lakes are representative of the average size and capacity of the lakes that Raghavan has restored, then we can use them as a basis for our calculation. We can also assume that one acre-foot of water is equivalent to 1,233 cubic meters or 1.233 million litres1. Using these assumptions, we can estimate that the average area of the lakes that Raghavan has restored is (7 + 24) / 2 = 15.5 acres. The average water storage capacity of the lakes that Raghavan has restored is (360 + (7 x 1.233)) / 2 = 184.655 million litres or 184,655 cubic meters. Multiplying these averages by the number of lakes that he has restored (142), we can estimate that the total area of the lakes that he has restored is 15.5 x 142 = 2,201 acres. The total water storage capacity of the lakes that he has restored is 184.655 x 142 = 26,221,010 cubic meters or 26.221 billion litres. This means that Raghavan has potentially saved more than 26 billion litres of water from being lost to the sea or evaporation by restoring these lakes. This is a remarkable achievement and a great service to the environment and society. Of course, this is only a rough estimation and there may be many factors that affect the actual amount of water that has been restored by his projects. For example, some lakes may have larger or smaller areas and capacities than the average, some lakes may have more or less rainfall and inflow than others, some lakes may have more or less evaporation and outflow than others, etc. Therefore, this calculation should not be taken as an accurate or definitive answer, but rather as an approximation based on some available data. To get a more precise and reliable answer, one would need to conduct a detailed survey and analysis of each lake that Raghavan has restored, taking into account all the relevant variables and conditions.
