Some fishing boats on Lake Victoria now use an electric motor rented from Dutch startup Asobo. It provides training, services the motors and charges the batteries with solar power. That helps to protect the ecosystem and cut the fishermen's costs.

Good idea. They are much easier to use, are quieter and less smelly, and they can be recharged even from solar. We have 4 boats here at home in Australia and all four are now electrically powered.

No doubt I believe the cheaper gas engines these guys usually use are absolute garbage nosiest smelly and not that powerful

Kenyan electricity is reliable but it is extremely costly because of limited sources. I am sure most Kenyans would like to phase out diesel and petrol and adopt electric mobility, but the cost of electricity is extremely high. Maybe the government should work with stakeholders in increasing electricity supply and lowering the cost in the process hence encouraging the adoption of electric vehicle. Another alternative is to incentivise the EV industry for long term growth and sustainability in the country.

I guess solar would work well in this use case: Recharge the spare set of batteries on the land, while the other set is being used in the boat. Then swap them on the next day.

I think the question is, is it more expensive than petrol? It's a comparison thing

Who owns this company ASOBO ??? 🤷🏿‍♂️. Is it owned by local Kenyans or is it foreign owned. I perceive it's foreign owned by people who want to remain anonymous. They are only giving it an African face.

Sounds expensive and there is that usual tracking system that's common with everything nowadays. You can't beat petrol power.
@Knight_Industries_2000
@Knight_Industries_2000 2 года назад
Petrol prices are sky rocketing at this very moment. Also kenya has green energy. Yet you think nothing can beat petrol? Why? Btw: With petrol you need to buy and repair an expensive motor and you probably need money or loan (with interest) upfront. And yes, in my opinion it is a good thing to have a tracker on a boat.
