Please note that the altar on which jeroboam sacrificed was not a Godly one because God's altar was in Jerusalem but this was in bethel. As such jeroboam was not making himself a priest of God but he was sacrificing to an idol. 2nd kg 12 25-33.
Uzziah is also a perfect example on a King/politician who defied The Lord by going to Lord's temple to make sacrifices, a role appointed for Levitical priesthood. Jeroboam overthrew the Lord's ordinaces and appointed priests to serve in shrines in Dan and Bethel. He misdirected the nation to the worship of the idols. Infact, he told them Jerusalem was too far and replaced the worship places. It is the same thing we are seeing in Kenya, politicians coming to churches and doing politics, pastors clapping and encouraging them to defile the Lord's ordinaces. At the end what is going to happen, The Lord will expose these politicians and false churches. The Lord has give us the discernment to know the false and the true leaders, infact He was happy with the church in revelation that had this discernment. Rev 2:2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.
